[Dx4win] Newbie questions

2003-01-09 Thread Peter E. Beedlow
Ken-Dubuque shows in my worked listing. I have run into a problem where a
county doesn't get recorded when entered because of a spelling error. Really
need an error message if something is entered that doesn't match the
database for that particular field.

Hello All,

I have version 5.03, and I'm at 2100 Q's out of about 12K
to be manually entered.

I've just discovered that my first QSO with Dubuque County
Iowa does not show up in the list of counties worked. The QSO
-IS- in the log and it shows up when I search for Dubuque in the
County field. With about 590 counties now worked, I'm now
wondering if there are others that have also failed to show in the
list. I REALLY don't want to go back and audit 2100 entries to
see if EACH new one has shown up as I've entered it. Someone
please see if your Dubuque county QSO appears in YOUR list
of counties worked.

It would be helpful to have the ability to enter Independent City
in the County field for those states that have these ... VA and
MO, for example. Why? Since there isn't (yet) a City field
one could search VA and Independent City for QSO's that
could be claimed for one of the needed adjacent counties.

A City field would be most helpful. In my span of 51 years
of operating I have many QSO's with stations that have been
located in different places and if I understand correctly these
must be noted in the Notes for this QSO field and NOT in the
Notes for this call. I accidentally found that a Notes ... call
entry for Bill - Podunk will be changed in all my QSO's with
Bill when I log him at his new location as Bill - Hamville.
I should have been entering all the 2100 locations in the Notes ...
QSO field ... correct?

I've run across numerous cases of spelling conflicts with 'boro
and 'borough as they appear un the US Postal Directory. The
Postal Directory spelling should be the correct one.

The CA Yuma / Yuba County error has been noted before.

How do we know when there is a update available as these
little glitches get fixed and how do I get the update?

[Dx4win] Re: Dubuque error mine

2003-01-09 Thread Paul van der Eijk
Ken,

Entering a county that is not spelled correctly should bring up the
list of valid counties in the state. Version 5.03 does not do that, and I
will fix that for the next release. When you tab through the field that window
appears, but not when you press Enter to finish the entry.

Hello All,

The error that caused Dubuque County (IA) not
to appear in the list of counties worked was mine.

Paul responded very quickly and asked a key
question that led me directly to the solution, AND
to 100+ similar errors. (;-)

I've been entering my paper log data EXACTLY as
it appears in the logs and therein was the cause
of the Dubuque problem. If I'd not received a report
during the QSO the field was left blank (empty) and
the software automatically inserts a 0 in that field.
If the field has a zero the QSO does not appear in the
counties worked report. I've now searched for 0's in
the RST received and sent fields and found 100+ such
entries. (;-)

My solution has been to enter 111 in the fields that
have no value in the paper log. Some of these will
no doubt be fixed when I go back through the log with
the actual QSL's in hand and cross-check the info.
What! You don't have every QSL you've received over
your entire amateur radio career? Filed alphabetically
in cabinets, no less. (:-))

Several have asked why the manual entry? Yes,
it -IS- a -LOT- of work and will take many weeks to
accomplish. I've been licensed 51 years and have
kept very careful logs over that time. I estimate
that there are about 12K QSO's involved ... maybe
more. I've recently retired and have the time to
indulge in such compulsive behavior. (:-))

I already have DXCC (309/CW), several flavors of
WAS and many other awards, have been rare DX
and done very well in contests, but I've never had
the opportunity to get all the information into one
database. I -AM- interested in the County Award
program and this is one of the goals of this effort.
