[Dx4win] A strange Bug continues
John It's curious that you mention lock up associated with running QRZ.com... I never have had lock up with DX4WIN, and I don't run QRZ.com (though thought maybe I ought to) However; I have noticed when I fire up QRZ.COM in recent times; it often locks up Explorer (stuck on something called googlead.; and Explorer doesn't respond. This happened on 2 Windows XP PC's that never did this before. The point is - if Explorer locks up AND you are using on line QRZ.com, just maybe DX4WIN is locking up . just like if you pull the plug on rig control ? Hope the comment is useful 73 Dave G3NKC -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of John Shaw Sent: 16 March 2008 19:38 To: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: RE: [Dx4win] A strange Bug continues Hi Ken, I have been using DX4WIN you many years and found it a very stable program. However I have had one instance of it repeatedly locking up. This was on one particular callsign, which I can't remember now but every time I typed in the call wamo DX4WIN was toast. In my case it was my QRZ callsign data base that caused the problem. If I didn't have the lookup running it was fine, if I did there was trouble. So while your problem sounds a little different, it does raise the point that it could be some associated activity. If have any feature running in DX4WIN asking it to call some other database lookup etc, turn it off and see if the problem goes away. 73 John ZL1BYZ. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Ken Kopp Sent: Monday, 17 March 2008 4:56 a.m. To: Dx4win@Mailman.Qth.Net Subject: [Dx4win] A strange Bug continues My thanks to all who have responded with possible causes, questions, etc. Lotsa knowledge here, and that's why I asked the question. It seems unlikely that it's a key malfunction matter, as it ONLY occurs with a W5Axx call entry ... not with a 5Axx or any combination of letters surrounding the 5 ... and not with any other number/letter combination. It only happens with W5A. Remember, I've now entered about 15K QSO's and this is the only problem I've seen. I haven't connected another keyboard ... I will. The one in use is a Logitec cordless. Related to a key logger? I doubt it, as the computer in question is almost never on line, and is used only for DX4WIN. The computer's OS is XP and it has Norton 2007, Spybot and Ad-Aware software that's updated and run once a week ... about the only time the machine's on line. The only other on line activity is to visit the Elecraft site for updates to my K3. The laptop that works OK has the same OS and software ... they are almost mirror images of each other. I don't view the program as crashed as one respondent termed it. The A keystroke just instantly returns me to the open desktop and then I can restart he program normally via the DX4WIN icon. All data is then current through the last auto back-up no more than one minute prior to the closure. Thank you all for your efforts ... I'll let you know what/if I find. 73! [Dx4win] A strange Bug continues
Hi Dave, Interesting, guess I should have been a little more specific. In my case it was looking up the data base which had been copied from a CD ROM to my HD. I still use the same setup today although the QRZ version is now getting very old version and don't have any troubles. I guess it would still happen if I should come across the call. Anyway for a long time I have been a happy camper. The event had all but been forgotten, may have been on another computer and a few versions of DX4WIN back but when reading Ken's lament it surfaced in my mind and I thought it might be worth mentioning and it looks like it may have helped. I think some people have had lookup problems when using using old versions of the dll file that I think facilitates the parsing between the two applications but I have no experience with this so will let others comment if appropriate. 73 John ZL1BYZ. -Original Message- From: Dave Sharred [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, 17 March 2008 11:51 a.m. To: John Shaw; dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: RE: [Dx4win] A strange Bug continues John It's curious that you mention lock up associated with running QRZ.com... [Dx4win] Strange bug found ?
--- Ken Kopp [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Thanks to ZL1BYZ and KA9CFD, I may have found the cause ... but not the reason ... for the program shut-down when entering a W5A*** call. Hi Ken, I assume that while you are logging, you have the F3 window open, and it's updating in Real Time. W5A is a 1x1 call, and there are number of QSL managers listed in the country file for this (and other 1x1) call(s). I'm positing that one of those managers is causing the problem. Are you entering QSOs in real-time or off-line mode? If in off-line mode, what is the DATE when you see the problem? Using the following table of W5A QSL managers, you should be able to identify the manager for that particular date. Note that the date format is DD/MM/. You should find that if you enter the managers callsign (instead of simply W5A), the program should also have problems. W5A,01/11/1998,N5AN W5A,15/06/1999,N5KB W5A,01/11/1999,N5AN W5A,01/12/1999,N5KB W5A,15/06/2000,KD5HPS W5A,01/11/2000,N5AN W5A,15/03/2001,N5RLM W5A,01/12/2001,N5RXS W5A,01/03/2002,N5GTD W5A,01/06/2002,K1JNN W5A,21/06/2002,KD5DXW W5A,01/08/2002,N5BIG W5A,06/12/2002,N5RXS W5A,15/05/2003,W5IQS W5A,14/11/2003,N5AN W5A,05/12/2003,N5RXS W5A,14/05/2004,W5IQS W5A,25/09/2004,KE5C W5A,03/12/2004,N2JAS W5A,13/05/2005,W5IQS W5A,25/06/2005,KB5YAM W5A,22/10/2005,W5QGU W5A,02/12/2005,N2JAS W5A,10/06/2006,AA5AR W5A,28/10/2006,KB5YAM W5A,01/12/2006,N2JAS W5A,02/03/2007,K5ADI W5A,19/10/2007,KE5EGK W5A,30/11/2007,N2JAS Here's an example. Say you are entering a QSO in your log with W5ABC on 1 January 2006. The most recent QSL manager in the list above for that date would be N2JAS (starting 2 December 2005, ending 10 June 2006). Therefore, if you try to log a QSO with N2JAS, and it goes to lookup that call on QRZ, then you should also have problems. Let us know what you find out. It's possibly a data buffer overrun problem, and Paul can possibly add a work-around. 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C/?, [EMAIL PROTECTED], http://www.ad1c.us From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mon Mar 17 11:40:27 2008 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Ken Kopp) Date: Mon Mar 17 11:47:14 2008 Subject: [Dx4win] Strange bug found ? [Dx4win] Additional ... Strange bug found ?
I'm using Buckmaster data from my HD. QRZ isn't involved. The F3 window is/was open. The only reason to use the F3 window is to see how many of us old poops are still licensed ... interesting info. If I disable the look-up in Preferences the problem doesn't manifest itself. Would be convenient to be able to open/close the F3 window without going to the Preferences screen. 73! [Dx4win] Help needed-QSO window
My 4-year olds got into the shack and played with my computer. I don't know what they did, but now I can't see my qso window. The packet screen and everything else is fine.
