[Dx4win] Filters, Groups and Selections

2011-09-07 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
Because there seems to be some confusion about Filters, Groups and
Selections, I've written a new application note:

http://dx4win.ad1c.us/appnotes/filters.html

Comments welcome.

Please note that when DX4WIN starts, all filters and selections are
CLEARED. DX4WIN always starts in Group 0, the All QSOs group, despite
what you may have read on this reflector recently.

Comments and corrections welcome!

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Help function while in the Program

2011-09-07 Thread John Scott
Thanks to AD1C for a quick reply. Compiled help file was right where it
should be, but for some unknown reason my installation couldn't find it
using either the F1 key or the Help menu. Today, after a system
shutdown and reboot my PC stopped punishing me and did what I expected
it to do all along. DX4WIN now performs marvelously with my new country
file showing the Republic of South Sudan. Hallelujah.

Re: [Dx4win] Still have one problem I cant fix.

2011-09-07 Thread Mel
I think the issue I had was a corrupt report file. I just deleted
dx4win.iep but that was at least one version back.

On 2011-09-06 08:41, Gary E. Jones wrote:
I wrote to the list a couple of weeks ago due to a problem I was having
because my computer was rebooting with Windows updates and corrupting the
DX4WIN program as it did an automated forced reboot. Several people,
including Jim Risert got me almost completely fixed. However there is on
remaining problem and it is what is most important about DX4WIN for me.. The
spots are not being checked against my log book to determine if I need the
country or it is logged and of little interest.. In other words, it is not
color coding the spots. I think related to this is a second problem that
shows when I try to open the country window which should show the matrix of
bands and countries worked, confirmed etc. That window fails to open and
gives an error message that says: A exception occurred: Fixed column count
must be less than column count.

I have tried downloading a completely new version of the software and I have
tried erasing virtually all of the saved files except my log and license and
that does not cure the problem. I have also tried loading a backed up
version of my log and that does not help, and I have tried starting a new
log and that does not help either. This tells me that the log file is not
corrupted, but that it is some parameter in the program itself that is
corrupted, but not cured by a new download.

Do any of you have any ideas on how to get this problem resolved?

 Thanks in advance

[Dx4win] Fix to my problem with DX4win not evaluating status of each spot with color code.

2011-09-07 Thread Gary E. Jones
I have written to the listserve twice requesting help on a big problem that
I had with DX4WIN which was crashing and being corrupted by forced updates
and reboots from Microsoft. AD1C gave me sage advice to prevent Windows from
taking control and forcing updates and shut downs without properly closing
DX4WIN. I have changed my computer so that it now downloads but I govern
when it installs and reboots and it will always be after I safely close all
problems.

I then tried downloading new versions of DX4WIN and erased all the files
that I could find (other than my log and license files). However, the
program would not work well. The most fundamental problem continued to be
that DX4Win did not color code my spots by evaluating my logbook, past QSOs,
past confirmations etc. I also could not see a country matrix showing me
what I had worked, had confirmed, or had QSLs in the mail for on each band
of each country that I worked. That is what makes DX4WIN most valuable for
me as I chase new countries from 160 to 6. So I wrote back a second time,
and again I got some good suggestions.

However, Wayne WA1PMA wrote me what seemed to be the simplest and most
fundamental approach. He suggested that I create a completely new folder
with a completely different name and download another version of 8.05 into
it. I did that, and I copied my license file into this same new folder, and
tried the new software with the sample log book. Then I logged on to my
home cluster and immediately, I saw that each spot coming in was evaluated
against the sample log, and I knew that it all was working again. Then I
moved my old actual log file into the save folder, got Jim's newest CTY
file, and presto, I was completely back in business. I needed to set a few
parameters in the preferences but I am now completely repaired.

I thought that I should document this so if it happens to someone else, they
might find this idea in an analysis of the archives.

I want to thank everyone that took your time to offer suggestions and
advice. I greatly appreciate it. THANKS !! Particular thanks to WA1PMA who
gave me the idea of a simple yet elegant solution. Thanks.
