[Dx4win] how do I merge DX4WIN logs without dups?

2019-11-13 Thread Jack Shirley N8DX
OK,

Let me ask another way: how do I merge two Ver 9 logs without it
duplicating every QSO? Is there a new function in V9? When I had V8 I
would use the import/export , merge DX4WIN log and use imported QSO is
ignored.

Re: [Dx4win] Merge DX4WIN logs utility broken?

2019-11-13 Thread Jack Shirley N8DX
I tried another computer and it had an older version .1140 It worked
fine. I updated to 1230 and same thing happens.

If you are importing from WSJT x then its and ADI file. No problem there.
Problem is when you merge two .dxl files that might have only a few QSOs
different.

Try it. Take your log and rename it to another name. Then do a merge
DX4WIN file operation of those two logs. Merge the two together with import
QSO is ignored" as the option.
It will dup everything. Dont save it or you log will double in size. Should
not do this, it didn't in the prior release or any before. BUG?

[Dx4win] Merge DX4WIN logs utility broken?

2019-11-13 Thread Jack Shirley N8DX
I have ver 9.0.7.1230 (latest)

File : import/export : file : merge DX4WIN log : Version 9 & later ,
imported QSO is ignored.

Now it adds all QSOs from the imported log so everything is duplicated. Has
something changed?

I do not remember it doing this before.

Worked ZL8X on 17M RTTY using DX4WIN/MMTTY
Entered QSO... Didn't realize there was an error in the time field

Somehow it recorded the time as ??:?? How can this happen? Why
wasn't there some type of error message?

Also in the grid field , kP3APq ( AP is in red color fonts )
sometime appears , without any other information entered into the
other blank fields. Is this coming from the Packet window ( ve7cc with
local host 7300 ) or ?

ver 7.07.02

I wanted to reload this version, but do not see it available for download.

Re: [Dx4win] Next release

2009-05-13 Thread Jack Shirley
Another suggestion: now that the latest version of BV7 labels can export QSO
data, add that as an option for label printing. It is the best QSO label
printer I've found. Or change DX4WIN so you can print the date in various
numeric formats. Not everyone speaks English.

Please improve the ignore mode in real time. Perhaps make it a option
under preferences.

The next release will have a few interesting items, such as a band map, a

a few extra fields in the QSO Window (like name, QTH and frequency)

 I will keep you posted

Re: [Dx4win] Ignore mode in real time/changes/bug

2009-03-19 Thread Jack Shirley
It could be fixed by resetting the ignore mode when you exit either mmtty or
psk31. This would be logical. Yes its very annoying because the mode
thereafter is picked up by dx spots which explains why I log the wrong mode
sometimes. Maybe a warning flag too??
I'm going to solve the problem by using mmtty and its logging feature and
winwarbler, dxlabs, for psk31/63 which works better for me anyway on these
digital modes.

As far as I'm concerned that part of the program is broken.( mmtty psk )

From a design standpoint, I disagree with your base assumption As many
radios do not indicate the mode PSK31 or RTTY. While that may be true of
older radios, newer radios all include RTTY modes (and the newest now have a
PSK mode). The inconsistency within DX4Win is that clicking on an RTTY
packet spot sets the radio to RTTY mode and does NOT set the IgnoreMode flag
(thank heavens!), whereas clicking on a callsign in the MMTTY window does
 set the flag. H...

The real issue here is not only whether the radio supports RTTY directly,
but whether the op runs RTTY from FSK or AFSK (which means he uses USB or
LSB for RTTY). Perhaps a future enhancement would be a RTTY preference
setting Mode for RTTY operation: RTTY|USB|LSB. IF = RTTY, don't set
IgnoreMode and put the rig in RTTY. IF != RTTY, set IgnoreMode and put rig
in identified mode. Same could be true of a PSK preference setting.

Thanks for a great DX logging program. My only Wish List request is that
 you continue to support/improve DX4Win indefinitely! ;-)

  Jack,

Thank you for reporting this, but this is what I described in my message
to you and the reflector Mar-7:
 ==

Looking around in my code, the only 'unexpected' way to get the program
to ignore the mode from the radio is to double-click in the PSK32 or
MMTTY Window. The assumption is that you double-click a callsign, and
that you want to add a QSO with that callsign. As many radios do not
indicate the mode PSK31 or RTTY, the program sets the mode to the mode
of the window the double-click came from (PSK31 or RTTY). To have the
mode stick, we need to set IgnoreMode, otherwise the next radio poll
will set the mode back to the mode obtained from the radio.

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN in DEMO mode

2009-03-06 Thread Jack Shirley
Yes
This same thing happened to me. Almost exactly as you describe. ( I will
leave out the *four letter explicitives*.)
I described this to PAUL at Dayton and he told me this was impossible. For
me it happened while N8S was on and I lost a lot of contacts. I had to go
back and dupe most of them.As you have found out, after you try to close the
program and it tells you it can't be saved, you really fd. You can even
say no and get back into the program to hand write the last contacts. I
started backing up all my important QSOs on paper log.

I suggested they get rid of the Demo mode and make a version maybe excludes
certain features. But not being able to save...?? There is a lot of free
logging programs and have better support and features than this one, so why
the demo mode. The most value in this program is in the updates which are
done by AD1C and that's why I stay with the software. If the updates to the
databases were done with the enthusiasm of Paul, this would be go to the
same place as DX Desktop.

So you might have someone in your computer that you don't know about. I
suggest you run a offsite program by microtrend and run house call and see
if it finds anything major. Start it at night when you are ready to go to
bed as it take a long time for it to scan everything.

The other bugs I think the program currently has and Paul won't address:

Random going into: ignore Mode in real time
Spots/sort by frequency/stupid program toggles between the lowest freq
and current freq. Very annoying. Older versions of DX4WIN didn't behave this
poorly.
And the good old switching to Demo mode without a reason.

73 and good luck.

Yesterday I had a very strange thing occur with DX4WIN. I have been a

I opened DX4WIN using the same shortcut as always. It appeared to open
normally. I saw ZL7T spotted on 17m CW on the DXCluster (I did not have
PACKET open on DX4WIN, instead I was using the separate VE3SUN DX Monitor
program for my spotting). I did an F8 search for ZL7 to see if I needed them
on 17m CW. I did, so I worked them, and all seemed OK. I had received some
QSL cards in the mail so I did F8 searches for those calls and marked them
as confirmed. Over the next few hours I worked C6/W6DXC on 20m SSB, C56YK on
RTTY, and H40FN on 17m CW. Again, before working H40FN I did a F8 search to
see if I needed H40 on 17m CW. All my F8 searches went normally and when I
logged each new contact I searched for their QSL info and put the info and
address in the QSL MGR window. Everything seemed to be working FB. My
complete log was open and seemed to be working normally.
But then, when I was ready to shut down I did an ALT+S to save the changes.
OK. I then clicked on the uppermost right corner X to close the program.
When I did that a window opened saying C:\PROGRAM
FILES\DX4WIN707\SAVE\K7ACZ.DXL WAS MODIFIED, SAVE LOG TO DISK? I clicked on
YES. Another window opened saying something to the effect that changes could
not be saved in DEMO mode. I looked at the top of the main menu. It read
something to the effect DX4WIN DEMO MODE. It should have read DX4WIN 7.07.2
K7ACZ, etc. At this point I knew I was in trouble. I needed to close the
window that said: C:\PROGRAM FILES\DX4WIN707\SAVE\K7ACZ.DXL WAS MODIFIED,
SAVE LOG TO DISK? so I could write down on a pad the calls, times, modes,
etc, of the contacts I had made during the day so I could reenter them when
I could open the program back to normal logging again. So I hit the CANCEL
option thinking that would cancel the closing of the program. But it closed
anyway causing me to lose all the contact
s I had made during the day including a new mode (RTTY) for C56YK and a
 new band/mode (18m CW) for ZL7T and H40FN. I can't remember when during the
6 or so hours DX4WIN was open I actually made those contacts, all I can do
is guess within an hour or so.

When I restarted DX4WIN of course those contacts and changes made while in
DEMO mode were gone. Is there anyway to retrieve those contacts? Could they
be saved someplace I can't think of?
How and why did DX4WIN get into the DEMO mode anyway? I can't duplicate it.
I don't see how to get it into DEMO mode even if I wanted to.

[Dx4win] Help with Ignore mode in real time

2008-12-08 Thread Jack Shirley
Dear DX4WIN users,

What appears to be random occurrences, the Radio:Ignore mode in real time
becomes activated.
I cannot figure out why this is happening.

I am using an IC775 with a USB microham interface, DX4WIN ver 7.05.03

It is reading the mode / frequency correctly as I change them on the radio.
If I go to the RTTY or PSK31 windows and close them, it does not force the
ignore mode in real time function as I thought this might have something
to do with it.

So what conditions force DX4WIN program to into Ignore mode in real time
?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for doing this work. We all appreciate the work you do here.

The size of the manager data seems immaterial to the need for the
most accurate data. My own feeling is after 10 yrs a lot of things
change. With the average age of Hams being what it is, anything
longer than a ten year history will become suspect anyway.

I like others find if DX4WIN agrees with other sources, I'm much more
confident of having a good return on the cards.

A lot of times if I see a spot and it has a US manager, I will work
harder at making the contact than if there is no QSL information at
all. I am more apt to work the station for a band/mode for this
reason also. Of course a new country is worked regardless of what
information is immediately available. WFWL

I've also just discovered VE7CC's cluster software will mark a spot
where the spotted station is a confirmed LOTW user.

As long as you enjoy doing this work, you need to make the decision
on how to do it. I certainly appreciate the work you do and will
gladly accept what ever decision you make on this.

Thanks again Jim for all you work on this.

Hi Folks,

Before I started working on the DX4WIN QSL manager database, there were about
6,600 records. Today it's getting close to 30,000 records.

Some people sent me their DX4WIN.CTY files so I could merge the data into the
master file. Some of them had over 100,000 QSL manager records. I
assume they
loaded one of the databases like ON6DP or OZ7C (I think there was an Italian
one floating around as well). I threw these records out. I tend not to trust
the BIG databases because they tend to have a high error rate (on the order of
10%).

I just did a little experiment with the ON6DP database:

In my log of over 70,000 QSOs (going back to 1975), about 1/2 the DX (non-USA)
QSOs (not calls) do not have QSL managers listed. If I remove the calls
unlikely to have managers (i.e. fixed stations like G3, OH2, SM5, etc.), this
reduces to 7,760 QSOs with possible unknown managers. I then assigned QSL
managers from the ON6DP database, and found that 2,500 QSOs had
managers listed
that are NOT listed in the DX4WIN QSL manager database.

What does all this mean? Based on my log alone, the database needs to grow
another 10% in order to assign missing QSL managers to my log.

Where is all this leading:

- Do you want a large QSL manager database in DX4WIN or a smaller one?

- Is quality or quantity more important? If you're unsure if the route is
good, you could always look it up somewhere else?

- Do you want only recent managers (i.e. going back to the last 10 years), or
something that goes back 20 or 30 years or even more?

- Do you not even care, because you use the GOLIST or QRZ.COM or another means
for finding QSL manager information?

Just some things to think about.

[Dx4win] startup problem

2003-02-03 Thread Jack Shirley
I moved .put file to my docs.
Did not fix the problem

I have 160-6m checked in my pref. and ssb, cw, fm , rtty checked in modes
pref.

Not a new log.
have about 13k Qs in it.

The only thing that seems strange is the country window no longer will come
up.

[Dx4win] Lost Data.

2003-01-22 Thread Jack Shirley
I have used Win 95, 98se, and WinXP pro.
I have lost data ( when forgetting to hit alt-s after my last QSO entry) =
when power is lost and the computer reboots more than once. This has =
happened on different computers and different versions of DX4WIN.
On multiple reboots, it seems to loose the QSOs since the last ALt-S =
save.

[Dx4win] Time field

2003-01-22 Thread Jack Shirley
I have on several occasions forgotten to click or tab on the time field =
to stop the clock.
Then ,several hours latter, you find that you have not logged the time =
correctly.
Would be nice if the time field would flash or change color after it is =
set.
Any suggestions?
