[Dx4win] Silent Key - James G. Dean VE3IQ

2015-01-14 Thread Capt.(N) James G. Dean Retd
Hello,

I am the son of VE3IQ, and share his name, Jim Dean.

I regret to inform you that my father passed away on Sat 3 Jan, at the age
of 77 after a 5-year fight with colon cancer.

I am currently going through his e-mails and unsubscribing him from his
different e-mail lists. Before I do that, I want to thank you for being his
Ham Radio buddies. It was a huge part of his life.

Re: [Dx4win] Fw: [Dx-qsl] QUESTION ABOUT OLDIES

2011-10-09 Thread James G. Dean
QRZ.com lists VK9LV for JS Blinick, K1JS. A check of the DXCC Deleted
Countries lists shows that the prefixes P2, VK9, were used for both Papua
Territory and Territory of New Guinea for contacts before and up to
September 15, 1975. I suggest that Bill email Joseph Blinick and ask if he
can clarify the situation. QRZ.com gives his email as k1jb(at)maine.rr.com.

[Dx4win] Upgrade to 8.05

2011-02-04 Thread James G. Dean
For Guy, ON4AOI and others:

I have downloaded DX4WIN 8.05 from Guy's website. I could not get it from
the DX4WIN website. Is there a reason for this, such as still being in Beta
testing?

I have found that 8.05 does not overwrite the existing DX4WIN as other
updates did. Is there a reason for this?

Finally, I see that I would have to type in all my preferences, configuration,
etc. Is there any way I can import from 9.04 and if so which folders and or
files? Can folders even be imported, or is that dangerous? I looked at the
documentation I have which goes back before version 7 and I am not sure
what to do now.

Any help appreciated.

[Dx4win] FT-2000 with DX4WIN 7.02. Problem Solved!

2009-11-25 Thread James G. Dean
Hello All:

With the help of Jim AD1C, Paul VE7BZ, Lou N2TU and John ZL1ALZ, the
problem was solved. FYI, here is what I did and the settings I used.

To start, note that I have an FT-2000(PEP); it was a great experience
downloading the PEP software and the radio worked splendidly without any
problems after I did the download. If you have not done it, I recommend it. It
does change the numbers on some of the menu items from what was in the
original FT-2000 manual, but that is a minor problem.

On the advice of Jim, AD1C, I went http://dx4win.ad1c.us/data.htm#Rig and
downloaded the Rig File called FT-2000 V8i. I copied it into the DX4WIN
radio folder with DX4WIN closed. Then I opened DX4WIN and went to
and selected . The settings that worked for me are:

Type = yaesuFT2000-V8i.
Address 00, with Default checked.
Baudrate 9600, with Default unchecked.
Com Port 7 (I use a USB port and hub from my laptop as it does not have a
serial port)
Poll rate 5000. Max tries 5.
DTR Low (unchecked)
RTS High (checked)

I then had to check the Baud rate in the FT-2000 and set it to 9600 (Menu
028) and ensure that RTS was ON (Menu 30).

Works a treat. Of course, then I had to go to N1MM Logger, which I use in
contests, and set the baud rate to 9600. One thing always leads to
another! Hi.

My thanks to all who helped me. I hope that this info will be of use to others.

Jim, VE3IQ

Re: [Dx4win] FT-2000 with DX4WIN 7.02

2009-11-24 Thread James G. Dean
Hi John:

Tried that with various combinations of settings on the Radio page. Did not
work. I can send CW okay, but I do not get the radio info. I get an error
message saying that Radio timed out, Radio interface has been disabled.

Am beginning to wonder if the FT-2000 will work with my 7.02 version of
DX4WIN.

Thanks for the try.

[Dx4win] FT-2000 with DX4WIN 7.02

2009-11-24 Thread James G. Dean
Hello All:

Can anybody give me the settings to use for radio control of my FT-2000. If I
go into File|Preferences|Radio, there is no info for an FT-2000 and I cannot
seem to get radio control. I can send CW okay. I use version 7.02.15 and
want to resolve this before I move over to V8.

Re: [Dx4win] Headings

2009-10-18 Thread James G. Dean
As a former naval navigator, I have been following this discussion with
interest. I agree with Jim that it makes most sense to use true north. The
magnetic pole shifts each year, and the amount of shift is indicated on
nautical charts as the "Variation". Each bearing taken with a magnetic
compass must be corrected for the Variation, and while the year-to-year
change is small, it means that every time you realign your antenna, you
have to recalculate the correction. While DX4W may permit an offset, it
makes no sense to me to use magnetic north a) because it shifts, and b)
because any program that I have found that calculates bearings and
distance always is based on the geographic north pole. Nautical charts are
always related to true north.

It makes more sense to me to set up your antenna once to true north using
an available magnetic compass, and then to establish a point or "datum" on
the ground as the true north alignment point for future realignments due to
beam changes, maintenance, storm damage, etc. That is what I do and it
has worked very successfully.

For what it is worth.

[Dx4win] Moving from 7.0.2 to 8.01 to 8.02

2009-09-13 Thread James G. Dean
Hi All:

Need some advice. I have downloaded DX4WIN 8.01and received my key.
Before I could install 8.01, I read that 8.02 was available. So, two questions:

1. Do I need to install 8.01, ge tit working and then downlaod 8.02, or should
I just downlaod 8.02 and install using my key and ignoring 8.01?

2. Can I shift my preferences and logs from 7.0.2 to 8.01/8.02 by copying
the 7.02. Save directory into the new programs, or do I have to set up all the
preferences individually and import each log file?
