The CW announce was not the culprit. I have >100k QSOs in the log with 38 different group numbers and I was using a selection.
Reverting to "ALL QSOS" made the difference. No more problems with the CPU approaching 100% duty cycle, now it remains in a few %. I exported my selection to a new log file in order to be able to track my DXCC and all is well.
