I don't have an answer to your question/s, although I sincerely hope that
someone else does.

I just wanted to say that I'm very pleased to see further dialogue on this

Merry Christmas, or however people choose to enjoy this time of year.

What do you mean by "reset"?

I disagree - a comparison (especially of the boot loader, not necessarily the
main software) could be instructive.

Be thankful for small mercies :))

You mean copying the firmware for interest's sake, or with the idea of copying
from the E1/E2 to the E3?

I really doubt that E1/E2 firmware would work on an E3. Different CPUs, for a
start.

Remember that there was a day when people wrote firmware for devices from
scratch, without using an "operating system". It's only since the days when
embedded devices like wireless routers, telephones, televisions etc have had
enough CPU and RAM to run Linux that this has been a simpler starting point.

Why do you always write this at the end of your emails?

I do find myself wondering "what are you trying to achieve with this process?"

If it's primarily a learning process, then I believe you are already

I seem to remember a posting along the lines of "this has got close enough
that we're not going to give more details, because we don't want to annoy
Amstrad, but anyone with enough clue might be able to take it from here".

I don't believe the actual steps needed were ever publicly posted (but I'd be
happy to be pointed at a correction if I'm wrong).
