Re: [E3-hacking] About connecting to the serial on the E3

2019-04-04 Thread Brian Walton
If the E3 has a TTL serial port as reported here then a USB to TTL serial
adapter should work fine. No need for line drivers or level adjustment, nor
any need for inverters. Just connect it straight through. These USB to TTL
serial are very common and cheap because they don't have the MAX232 (or
similar) conversion chips. Wire:

GND --- GND
TX --- RX
RX --- TX

Do not use a real RS233 port as it will use higher (and lower) voltage and
be inverted.

These cheap USB serial devices are a couple of quid on eBay.

Provided the E3 and the USB device ran off isolated supplies, you might be
able to get away with connecting the 5V (or whatever) on the USB adapter to
the GND on the jack. That would cause the logic levels to be interpreted
inverted.

Note, this does not constitute advice, not responsible for any device
destruction caused by doing this, etc...

I'd have thought that would make the USB dev see the E3's 0V - 5V as 5V - 10V,
and the E3 to see the USB's 0V - 5V as -5V - 0V. Which doesn't sound like it
helps - am I missing something?

[E3-hacking] How does it work then the Emailer deactivated itself..?

2019-04-04 Thread Nick Griffin
Hi me again..  WOW I have lit this place up like a xmas tree… 
Does anyone know how the Emailer works when it deactivates itself (locks
itself, I came up with the word activate/deactivate because that's what its
doing when it stops its features on the Emailer, deactivated non functional)

I think it might be downloading a file or something so if it can’t download the
file it deactivates the Emailer.

I would of done it that way because the file can be very small (bytes size) and
quick to download in a couple of seconds.

And like how it removes its games after a week or four weeks, after a set time
of not being able to connect to the server, it deletes the file and the Emailer
then deactivates itself because the file is not there no more.
Mine took 3 months to deactivate, I remembered when I got it from eBay and turn
it on, I had it on continually, but still have it on now. (but that's because
the firmware has a bug in it so it lets you make a call on it even when it
deactivated, more about that in another post)
The E3 its way better looking than the rest..  the E1 look better then the E2.

It does make senses, but I might be completely wrong, If you know how it works
please post.

Thanks and have a great day.

Re: [E3-hacking] About connecting to the serial on the E3

2019-04-04 Thread David Given
Yes, you're right, that's clearly nonsense.

Why would the E3 generate an inverted signal, anyway? If it's just the raw
output from the processor (which I think it is) then it should be standard
TTL levels, because it's supposed to be fed into something like a MAX232
for conversion to RS232 levels. Inverting it but leaving it at TTL seems
very odd.
