[ECOLOG-L] Post-Doc Opportunity with USDA
Informal Announcement The USDA-ARS Plant Science Research Unit in Raleigh, North Carolina is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate for a one year appointment with potential extension for an additional year. The incumbent will assess electrophoretic protein banding patterns of extracts from different root classes of soybean grown in aeroponics and soil. The incumbent will also determine Community Level Physiological Profiles (CLPP) of the microbial communities found in the rhizosphere of different root classes in soil grown soybean plants, correlate the CLPP data with the protein analyses, and, if time permits, begin an assessment of specific proteins/microbes involved in the interactions. Individuals with a recent (within 4 years) PhD in Plant Physiology or a related field (such as Biochemistry, Genetics, Plant Pathology, or Soil Microbiology) and interest in the biology of the plant root-soil interface should contact Kent Burkey by email (kent.bur...@ars.usda.gov) or telephone (919-515-1620) for further information about this position and the formal application process.

[ECOLOG-L] Sub meter GPS
Hi all, I have funding to purchase a sub-meter accuracy, hand-held GPS unit. I saw a recent post where someone was saying they used and recommended the Trimble 6000 series. I was wondering if anyone had experience with the Trimble 7x series. My specific question is about the difference between the 7X decimeter (Trimble Geo 7X handheld with rangefinder (H-Star, Floodlight, NMEA) - WEHH 6.5) and 7X centimeter (Trimble Geo 7 Series Premium Centimeter Kit with TerraSync Centimeter Edition). Is it really worth the extra $5K for the centimeter version? I am not really familiar with these and am wondering if the difference is worth it. Any comments would be appreciated.
[ECOLOG-L] Call for PhD student: virulence of chytridiomycosis in Australia
*2 PhD opportunities to study virulence of chytridiomycosis at James Cook University, Townsville, Queensland, Australia* Chytridiomycosis has caused amphibian declines and extinctions globally as it has spread through naïve populations. It is now endemic in much of its suitable range in Australia where it still causes high mortality rates and threatens amphibian biodiversity. We have funds to investigate mechanisms of virulence and how virulence of *Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis *(Bd) is evolving as it adapts to new habitats. One project is focussed on how Bd causes disease and will involve bioassays, toxin identification and possibly gene knockouts. The second project involves comparing Australian Bd strains to assess growth characteristics and virulence. Both projects may involve frog transmission experiments. The students will be able to pursue areas of interest within this framework. The candidates will be part of the enthusiastic and supportive One Health Research Group at JCU, see http://www.jcu.edu.au/phtmrs/abc/JCU_107907.html http://www.jcu.edu.au/cphmvs/public-health-tropical-medicine/JCU_107907.html and Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/onehealthresearchgroup/info. https://www.facebook.com/onehealthresearchgroup/info The projects are multidisciplinary and involve collaborators such as Queensland Institute of Medical Research in Brisbane. The outcomes of the projects will to lead to the improved conservation of amphibian biodiversity and may contribute to theories on host/pathogen dynamics. The selected applicants would need to apply for an APA or international PhD scholarship (due31 Aug). Please see http://www.jcu.edu.au/grs/scholarships/index.htm Ideal PhD candidates will have: 1. 1 st class honours, Masters of Science by research or equivalent research credentials in a relevant discipline such as biology or veterinary science majoring in microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology or pathology. 2. Demonstrated publication record in high impact journals 4. Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills. Please send CV, cover letter and 2 reference letters to lee.ber...@jcu.edu.au and alex.robe...@jcu.edu.au.

[ECOLOG-L] PhD position: spatial ecology and habitat network modelling
The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is a part of the ETH domain. Approximately 500 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards. The Research Unit Biodiversity and Conservation Biology, which deals with all aspects of biodiversity from genes to ecosystems and which has strong links into practical management, is looking, per August 1, 2015, for a PhD student in spatial ecology and habitat network modelling. The interdisciplinary project CHECNET focusses on coupling ecological habitat networks with land-use/transport networks. You will develop a new method for constructing habitat networks that predicts occurrences of animal species resulting from changes in land-use and/or traffic flows on the Swiss Plateau. You work with existing occurrence data from a range of animal groups. You publish your work in international scientific journals and present them at conferences. You have a Master in Biology, Environmental Sciences or Geography, are interested in spatial ecology and have experience with the modelling of habitat connectivity, habitat suitability and/or networks. You also have experience with programming (R, Python, Matlab) and GIS (ArcGIS, QGIS). You enjoy communication and collaboration in an interdisciplinary project and are fluent in English. Re: [ECOLOG-L] recommendation on growth/environmental chambers?
Ryan, I have two Percival growth chambers that I have used for pitcher plants and insect rearing. Temp, light and humidity can be controlled. I have run my chambers almost continuously for over 12 years. No problems other than maintenance of the humidifiers. I have to use cool air humidifiers rather than plumbed-in humidification because we don't have deionized water on tap nor do we have floor drains. We rigged up a system to maintain the water level in the humidifier chambers. I am very happy with the chambers; but keeping the humidity running has been a challenge due to the construction of the humidifiers.
