Position Announcement Position Description: Environmental Studies, an interdisciplinary department in the College of Public Affairs and Administration at the University of Illinois at Springfield, seeks applicants with expertise in U.S. environmental policy for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position that will begin on 16 August 2016. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in environmental policy/administration, environmental law, environmental studies, natural resources management, or a related discipline. The successful candidate must be able to teach two specific graduate courses on U.S. environmental policy (ENS 581 Environmental Policy Analysis and ENS 587 Natural Resources: Policy and Administration). Preference will be given to candidates who can also teach courses on environmental law and NEPA; some familiarity with international policy is desirable. The remainder of the course load will be a to-be-determined combination of core courses for our majors and topics in the successful applicant's area of interest. Teaching load (three courses per spring and fall semester) will consist of a combination of on-campus and online courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Summer teaching may be done but is not required. This position will perform academic advising, direct student research, and conduct research in her/his specialization, but the primary expectation is excellence in teaching. At UIS there are immediate opportunities, and expectations, to develop a service portfolio at the department, college, and campus levels. Research opportunities exist not only through collaboration with other Environmental Studies faculty and staff, but with active peers in other departments as well as with the resources afforded UIS due to our position in the state capital. There are abundant opportunities to support graduate students, especially through our Graduate Public Service Internship program (gpsi.uis.edu). Department Information: We currently have six tenure-track faculty lines, approximately 100 graduate students, and about 30 undergraduate majors. The Bottlenose Dolphin Research Institute (BDRI) http://www.thebdri.com/, is a marine science centre dedicated to promote the conservation of marine mammal species and their habitat through education and research. On behalf of the BDRI, I am pleased to announce that we are currently accepting applications for the following: INTERN COORDINATOR along the North-western coast of the Iberian Peninsula, Galician waters, Spain. This position is responsible for assisting the BDRI biologists in the running of the Marine Mammals Research Project in Galician waters http://www.thebdri.com/research/projects.html/ and coordinating the project interns. The project is based in O Grove, North-western coast of Spain, and offers the participants the chance to work during many steps of the field research and data analysis. The main purpose of this program is to contribute towards a more detailed understanding of the ecology and behaviour of bottlenose dolphins and harbour porpoises, with a focus on ethology, social structure, habitat use and communication. Furthermore, as the Galician coastline is known for frequent strandings of various marine mammals species, the BDRI is part of an important network for rescue and data collection from these stranded animals. Start Date: January 2016 End Date: October 31st 2016 (start and end dates could be flexible) Responsibilities will include but are not limited to: * Assisting the BDRI's biologists in all phases of the research and organization.* Coordinate between the Chief Biologist/Director and the project interns - in charge of the intern shared house.* Assisting the BDRI's biologists in intern basic training of land- and boat based surveys, photo ID studies, Database entry, Bioacoustical analysis, GIS and more.* Undertaking a personal research project supervised by the Chief Biologist / Director - research topic will be chosen according to BDRI requirements and applicants' interests. Two-year Postdoctoral opportunity studying Pollinator Conservation with Sheila R. Colla (Faculty of Environmental Studies, York University, Toronto, ON, Canada) and Wildlife Preservation Canada. PROJECT DESCRIPTION: We anticipate hiring a postdoctoral researcher for a Mitacs-funded project focusing on the conservation of at-risk pollinator species in southern Ontario. The project aims to develop effective and evidence-based conservation tools and techniques for bumble bee and/or lepidopteran species assessed as at-risk of extinction by the IUCN Redlist or COSEWIC. Species with extant or historical populations occurring on or near agricultural landscapes in southern Ontario will be prioritized. Exact research questions will be further developed with candidate but may include topics such as wildlife corridors, ecosystem services, citizen science (using BumbleBeeWatch.org) and/or species reintroduction. This project will involve various stakeholder groups and partners including landowners, ENGOs, naturalist groups, government biologists and policymakers and is suitable for a candidate interested in interdisciplinary wildlife management training. QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in ecology or related field. Training in the area of endangered species management, insect taxonomy or pollination is preferred, but not required. Ability to work independently, supervise undergraduates and communicate effectively are essential. Candidates must have received their PhD no more than 5 years before the start date (although exceptions may be made for medical or parental leave).
