[ECOLOG-L] cycles in plant populations?

2017-02-04 Thread David Inouye
The classic examples of populations that cycle, including predator-prey
interactions, and some host-parasite interactions, all involve animals.
Are there similar examples of cycles in plant populations? Certainly
lots of variation in abundance, such as in population size of desert
annuals responding to precipitation, but what about regular (cyclic)
variation?

A graduate assistantship is available in MOUNTAIN FIRE/FOREST ECOHYDROLOGY
at Washington State University in Vancouver, for a student interested in a
PhD (already with MS) or an MS-PhD dual degree. Exceptional candidates
wishing MS only will also be considered.

The intended research theme is, broadly, plant-water relations and
ecohydrologic recovery following forest fire, including aspects of soil
science, plant water use, and hillslope/catchment hydrology. The qualified
candidate is expected to develop during the beginning of their graduate
studies a specific thesis/dissertation research topic based on their own
interests within in this general area, in cooperation with supervisor Dr.
Kevan Moffett. Required qualifications include: strong physical science and
mathematics or engineering background, familiarity with hydrology, strong
writing and communication skills, research experienced. Desired (but not
required) qualifications include: numerical modeling experience, programming
experience, GIS skills, independent field research experience, some exposure
to plant biology and/or aquatic biogeochemistry and/or soil physics and/or
remote sensing analysis. The position will begin in August 2017 and be in
Environmental Sciences (if MS) or Environmental Science and Natural
resources (PhD) at Washington State University, with study fully on the
Vancouver campus. Funding of graduate tuition, full-time stipend, plus
benefits is guaranteed for sufficient time to complete the degree.
Vancouver, WA is a fantastic city in southwestern Washington State, USA,

Dear Population Ecology/Plant Ecology friends,

I have written a manuscript on the demography of the dominant conifer
Araucaria angustifolia in a forest-grassland mosaic in southern Brazilian
mixed conifer-hardwood ecoregion, using aerial photographs and satellite
imagery as sampling techniques.

I would like to have a second look to improve the manuscript before its
publication.

Are you willing to review the manuscript for me with a special eye to the
writing (English is not my first language)? I am willing to review some
text from you in exchange. My deadline is February 23th.

Thank you very much in advance,

Alexandre

[ECOLOG-L] Who coined the phrase Dyar's Rule/Law?

2017-02-04 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Colleagues:

Who coined the phrase Dyar's Rule/Law? Background follows.

In *The number of molts of lepidopterous larvae*, Dyar (1890) proposed a
simple relationship, in mathematics known as a geometric progression,
between the linear dimensions of hardened, or sclerotized, structures in
moth and butterfly larvae as they grow by molting during their
discontinuous development. This constant rate of size increase model, which has
become known as Dyar’s Rule or Dyar’s Law.

But who coined the phrase Dyar's Rule/Law? Note, I have already
communicated with two experts on Dyar.

If you have a constructive suggestion, please email me directly:

Gratefully,
