[ECOLOG-L] Publication options for low-income scientists?

2017-10-16 Thread Laura Heiker
I recently received my PhD and am now trying to publish in respectable
peer-reviewed journals. As an early career scientist, I need these
publications to obtain a post-doc, but the cost of publication is
prohibitively high for me to pay out-of-pocket. (My former university
does not offer funding for publication, and I'm currently unemployed.)

Does anyone know of potential funding sources or alternative options for
low-income scientists to publish (in wildlife biology/ecotoxicology)? I
know there are newer, online-only journals that offer cheaper
publications, but I'm wary of their quality.

[ECOLOG-L] Ph.D. Species Interactions

2017-10-16 Thread David Althoff
Ph.D. Opportunity in Species Interactions

Althoff lab, Dept of Biology, Syracuse University

We are seeking exceptional students interested in studying the
evolutionary ecology of species interactions. The lab focuses on studies
of coevolution, specialization, and speciation, and we use a combination
of diverse tools including field studies, molecular phylogenetics,
and population genetics. Although we primarily examine plant-insect
and parasitoid-host coevolution, students interested in other taxonomic
groups are strongly encouraged to apply. There are currently two funded
projects, one on the role of mutualism and antagonism in yucca and yucca
moth speciation and another using a synthetic yeast mutualism to study the
ecology and evolution of multi-mutualist species communities. Research is
question-driven rather than taxon-driven. Please visit the lab webpage
at althofflab.syr.edu for more information.

Funding is guaranteed via teaching assistantships for 5 years and
potentially research assistantships. Syracuse University offers
excellent benefits, a full tuition waiver, and a generous stipend
(~$25K for 2016). Furthermore, the close proximity of S.U. to the
SUNY-Environmental Science and Forestry campus and Cornell makes this
a strong and vibrant community that facilitates an exciting graduate
experience.

Prospective students are encouraged to contact Dr. David Althoff
(dmalt...@syr.edu).

[ECOLOG-L] AmeriCorps Position at The Wilds

2017-10-16 Thread Patrick Boleman
The Wilds is a conservation research facility in Muskingum County, Ohio. The
Restoration Ecology and Wildlife Ecology departments work in applied land
management, wildlife monitoring, and conservation research on over 9,000 acres
of reclaimed strip mined on which The Wilds resides. Our goal is to involve
local students in restoration and management activities at The Wilds, while
simultaneously enhancing environmental awareness and developing skills that
will help them succeed in their chosen pursuits. We will provide training in
ecological and restoration techniques to middle and high school students in
eastern Ohio, particularly targeting localities with lower college
representation. Students will then assist scientists and apprentices at The
Wilds in activities such as invasive species removal, planting native species,
collecting seed, and monitoring wildlife responses to habitat restoration.

The AmeriCorps Volunteer will be the coordinator for the program and will be
supervised by the Director of Restoration Ecology and Director of Wildlife
Ecology. The member will be responsible for coordinating and leading volunteer
classroom and other groups in ecological activities, increasing the number of
participating groups, and planning restoration activities that will jointly
include students and Wilds personnel. The member will also help disburse grant
funding to eligible classrooms, and identify and apply for additional grant
opportunities that would provide funding for volunteer activities, supplies,
and student internships at the Wilds. Therefore, the applicant should have
good communication and writing skills, experience leading large groups,
interest or experience in ecological and restoration field work (such as
invasive species removal, prescribed burning, seed collection, and/or wildlife
survey techniques), and a desire to help mentor students in the environmental
sciences.
