Introduction to Mixed (Hierarchical) models for biologists using R (IMBR01)

http://bit.ly/2GeSKKyINTRO_TO_MIXEDMODELS

This is just a gentle reminder that we still have a few places left on this
course.

Deliver by Prof Subhash Lele form 14th - 18th May 2018 in Quebec Canada.

Course overview:
Mixed models, also known as hierarchical models and multilevel models, is a
useful class of models for many applied sciences, including biology,
ecology and evolution. The goal of this course is to give a thorough
introduction to the logic, theory and most importantly implementation of
these models to solve practical problems in ecology. Participants are not
expected to know mathematics beyond the basic algebra and calculus.
Participants are expected to know some R programming and to be familiar
with the linear and generalized linear regression. We will be using JAGS
(Just Another Gibbs Sampler) for Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC)
simulations for analyzing mixed models. The course will be conducted so
that participants have substantial hands-on experience.

This course will cover the concepts, technical background and use of stable
isotope mixing models (SIMMs) with a particular focus on running them in R.
Recently SIMMs have become a very popular tool for quantifying food webs
and thus the diet of predators and prey in an ecosystem. Starting with only
basic understanding of statistical models, we will cover the do’s and
don’ts of using SIMMs with a particular focus on the widely used package
SIAR and the more advanced MixSIAR. Participants will be taught some of the
advanced features of these packages, which will enable them to produce a
richer class of output, and are encouraged to bring their own data sets and
problems to study during the round-table discussions.

[ECOLOG-L] Help us improve Circuitscape

2018-03-27 Thread Randy Swaty
Hello everyone,
Please consider this message and survey sent to me from colleague Kim
Hall if you are a Circuitscape user:

Circuitscape (http://www.circuitscape.org/) is a widely-used open
source software program that borrows ideas from circuit theory to assess
landscape connectivity. While the range of applications for Circuitscape
has continued to grow since it was first developed by Brad McRae and
Viral Shah over a decade ago, computational limitations hinder its
ability to solve large problems. Before Brad McRae passed away from
cancer in July 2017, he received funding from NASA’s Earth Science
Applications: Ecological Forecasting program to lead a team with Viral,
now at Julia Computing, to overhaul the software and add functionality.
Viral and several of Brad’s colleagues at The Nature Conservancy (TNC),
with help from many of Brad’s friends and collaborators, are continuing
this important work, and we need your help! If you are a Circuitscape
user, or would like to be, please follow this survey link to learn more
about this project, and provide your input --

[ECOLOG-L] Volunteer Openings in Tropical Herpetology in Peru

2018-03-27 Thread Karl Uy
Volunteer positions with the Alliance for Research and Conservation in the
Amazon (ARCAmazon) are open this summer between June and September 2018
for monitoring reptiles and amphibians in the Las Piedras watershed in the
Madre de Dios region of Peru. Opportunities at ARCAmazon are ideal for
university students and recent graduates looking for field experience, or
professionals searching for unique and meaningful travel experiences.
Volunteers will learn a variety of field skills as well as contribute from
their own abilities and knowledge to a vital cause.

The Alliance for Research and Conservation in the Amazon (ARCAmazon) is a
Peruvian non-profit that supports research and conservation initiatives in
collaboration with other non-profits in the region and with local
communities on the Las Piedras River. Our field site, Las Piedras Amazon
Center (LPAC), in a 4,460-hectare rainforest concession, acts as a hub
that channels the energy and resources of volunteering and ecotourism to
halt illegal logging, hunting and mining, improve our understanding of
Amazonian wildlife, and develop sustainable solutions for the needs of
local people making a living in the area.

The herpetology team at the Las Piedras Amazon Center monitors and studies
the diversity of frogs, toads, turtles, snakes and crocodilians in the
Peruvian Amazon. Herpetology volunteers work with professional researchers
to examine the population trends and behaviors of nearly 200 species of
reptiles and amphibians residing in various habitats and combine findings
with spatial data. A major component of the program is caiman research,
which involves the search, capture and tagging of various species of
caiman, important predators that indicate the health of the forest.

Volunteers at LPAC stay at our remote off-grid camp/ecotourist lodge.
Comfortable accommodations and authentic Peruvian meals are provided.
Living at LPAC also gives access to beautiful trails, swimming areas and
frequent wildlife sightings. Fees for accommodations vary by length and
nature of the stay. Please refer to our website for more details on the
herpetology team and accommodation fees or for information about other
programs: http://bit.ly/2FKMYmP

For any further inquiries, email ka...@arcamazon.org . To apply to
volunteer for the herpetology team, please visit our website and fill in
an application form.

[ECOLOG-L] Postdoctoral position in wetland ecosystem modeling at the University of Michigan

2018-03-27 Thread =?iso-8859-1?Q?William_S._Currie?=
UM Job Code: 134120

Job Summary

A postdoctoral researcher is sought in the School For Environment and
Sustainability (SEAS) at the University of Michigan. The successful
candidate will be located on the Ann Arbor campus and supervised by
Prof. Bill Currie (http://williamcurrie.net), contributing to a large-
scale collaborative project to evaluate the effects of future land-use
and climate change scenarios on coastal wetlands across the Great Lakes
basin. This is a NASA-funded research project conducted in
collaboration with co-PIs at the University of Michigan, Michigan State
University (MSU), Michigan Tech Research Institute, Texas A University
and the University of Northern Iowa. The successful candidate should
have a PhD in ecosystem ecology, plant community ecology, wetland
ecology, physiological ecology, biogeochemistry, ecosystem or ecological
modeling, or a closely related field and should have some prior
experience with modeling ecological plant communities or ecosystems.
S/he should have strong skills in data management. The ability to write
or debug computer code is a plus, as is an understanding of clonal
plants, wetland N cycling including denitrification, or wetland P
cycling. This research will involve working with the Mondrian model of
community-ecosystem processes in wetlands, applying the model for both
basic and applied research to study wetland plant invasions and the
effects of nutrient cycling and hydroperiod on wetland function. The
project will also involve linking the Mondrian model to a large-scale
watershed hydrogeochemical model developed by collaborators at MSU. The
linked models will be used to study wetland function and feedbacks under
future scenarios of land use change and climate change, and in a variety
of inland to coastal landscapes across the Great Lakes region. The
candidate will be expected to function well as part of a research team,
including working with co-PI faculty at other collaborating
universities. The candidate will be expected to present research
results at national conferences and to lead the development of
collaborative manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals.
S/he will have some flexibility to develop original research questions
and topics in areas related to the research funding. Salary is
competitive and includes a standard benefits package. The position will
be hired for one year, with renewal for a second year possible based on
performance and availability of continued funding.

How to apply

The School For Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) is an exciting new
School at the University of Michigan dedicated to studying problems and
issues at the interface of environment and society. This position has a
flexible start date anticipated to be as early as May 1, 2018. To apply
please combine a CV, cover letter describing your research interests and
qualifications for the position, and a copy of one publication in a
single PDF. Go to the UM careers website, http://careers.umich.edu, and
search for job opening ID# 134120 to upload the single pdf. As part of
the required application process three reference letters should also be
sent to seas-j...@umich.edu. Review of applications will begin on April
10, 2018 and continue until the position is filled. Women and under-
represented minorities are encouraged to apply. The University of
Michigan is an equal opportunity employer. Questions about the position
can be addressed to Bill Currie (wcur...@umich.edu).
