To my knowledge, Western does not have this type of facility. I was lucky
enough that my wife could stay home with our daughter, but I would have
been nice to have them come to campus some days and have a place to
stay/play while I finished office hours or class. For that matter, it would
have been nice if there was a breast feeding room withing proximity of our
department (I think there are only two on campus) for when she was on
campus.

[ECOLOG-L] On-campus facilities for childcare

2018-10-23 Thread Tom Langen
While this is not strictly an ecology question, I have a question about an
issue that many ecologists in higher education and their support staff,
graduate students, and some undergraduates face. My university – like most
colleges and universities, I suspect – is often open and in session when
schools and local day-cares are closed. Faculty, staff, and an increasing
number of graduate students and some undergraduates face days when they
need to be at class or other activities at the college. On such days, at
times they are obligated to bring their children with them.

Does your institution - or any you know of - have an on-campus place that
children and care-takers can hang out and play or study while university
community parents are working: a type of family waiting room or lounge? A
room with a comfortable environment where children can relax and play or
study and do homework, under supervision that is the responsibility of a
child’s caretaker. Note, I do not mean an on-campus daycare center, which I
am aware many larger higher-ed institutions have.

Please email me directly rather than through eco-log if you have any
information on this type of facility. I will greatly appreciate any input.

[ECOLOG-L] Geometric Morphometrics course in Berlin

2018-10-23 Thread Carlo Pecoraro
Dear all,

we will run the second edition of our course on "Geometric morphometrics"
with Dr Carmelo Fruciano next March (18-22) in Berlin.

The course will be delivered over five days and will comprise both lectures
and hands-on sessions. The lectures will cover both basic theoretical
aspects and their practical implementation in research practice and
software. During the hands-on sessions, the attendees will have the chance
of both using example datasets and applying the knowledge acquired to their
own data. The course will be focused mainly on 2D data and on easy-to-use
software with graphical user interface to maximize the ability to understand
concepts and apply them. However, some information on 3D data and on R
implementations will be provided, as appropriate.

This course is aimed at beginners and intermediate users. In other words, it
is aimed at researchers who intend to use geometric morphometrics or who
have started performing geometric morphometric analyses but feel they need a
more structured background.

[ECOLOG-L] Post-doc in Population Biology - Lincoln Park Zoo, Chicago

2018-10-23 Thread Lisa Faust
The Postdoctoral fellow will help design and conduct research on
cooperatively managed zoo-based populations of endangered and threatened
species. The Fellow will collaborate with a strong and dynamic existing
team of scientists in the Zoo’s Alexander Center for Applied Population
Biology, Population Management Center, and other scientists across the
Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), and be based at the Lincoln Park
Zoo in Chicago.

The primary focus is on applied research that improves management of zoo
populations utilizing the large-scale dataset in PMCTrack
(www.pmctrack.org), a database that tracks management outcomes of AZA
Species Survival Plans (SSPs). PMCTrack incorporates recommendations for
individual animals to move or breed, whether those recommendations
occurred as requested before the next management plan for an SSP was
issued, and reasons why recommendations did not occur. As of summer 2018,
PMCTrack had incorporated more than 347,000 recommendations for individual
animals to move and breed, which were sent to 688 zoos and aquariums
across North America. This dataset spans 18 years of the formalized SSP
management system.

The Post-Doctoral Fellow in Population Biology is a full-time, 3 year
position, subject to review after one year. The project is funded by a
grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and ideally the
position would start January 2019.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Analyze PMCTrack data using both qualitative and quantitative
analysis methods to produce data-driven advice on how to improve SSP
management.
• Design a framework for automating and standardizing future

2018-10-23 Thread Amy Hurford
The Hurford Lab (http://amyhurford.weebly.com/) at Memorial University is
recruiting graduate students at both the M.Sc. and Ph.D. levels. Our
research group studies population dynamics incorporating temperature
effects, animal movement, disease, and evolution. We formulate and test
specific hypothesis using mathematical models and parameterize and evaluate
our models using data. We analyze mathematical models that are systems of
ordinary differential equations, delay differential equations, partial
differential equations, integrodifference equations, or optimization
problems and these models are applied to a wide variety of systems including
green crab, rabies, and salmon lice. Specific research projects may include
optimal pest treatment strategies in seasonal environments, temperature
effects on population dynamics and movement, explicit models of animal
movement and contact rates, or collaborative work deriving models related to
laboratory research on antibiotic resistance in Klebsiella. Our research
usually involves computer coding and numerical methods and many scripts
pertaining to lab research are available here:
https://amyhurford.weebly.com/publications.html

A competitive salary will be offered with additional funding available for
conference travel. The ideal candidate will have experience deriving and
analyzing mathematical models, formulating scientific questions, computer
programming, mathematical analysis, and scientific writing, however, all
interested candidates are encouraged to apply.

Applicants should email Dr. Amy Hurford (ahurf...@mun.ca). This email should
include: (i) 1-2 paragraphs describing your research interests and any
relevant past experience, (ii) your CV, and (iii) unofficial transcripts
pertaining to your previous or ongoing studies (if possible). I will
consider applications as they are received. For full consideration
applicants should indicate their interest before November 15, 2018, but
applications received after this date may be considered.

Memorial University is located in St John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. The city
