[ECOLOG-L] Tenure track position in Geoscience and Water Sustainability at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Geology and Environmental Science

2015-09-15 Thread Dan Bain

Geoscience and Water Sustainability

The Department of Geology and Environmental Science seeks to expand its
expertise related to water sustainability in a changing climate and invites
applications for a tenure-track assistant professor pending budgetary
approval. Given the recent, profound shifts in water balance and those
anticipated in the near future, the Department seeks to develop capacity to
understand these issues of regional, national and global importance. We are
seeking a geoscientist with expertise in characterizing hydrologic changes
associated with climatic shifts and developing adaptation strategies
allowing society to sustainably adjust to these shifts. Our goal is to hire
a colleague who uses a combination of field measurements and observations,
remote sensing, and/or modeling to better understand water-climate-human
interactions in the critical zone. Specific areas of interest could
include, but are not limited to: catchment hydrology in urban, managed, and
natural systems; land-atmosphere interactions; soil moisture analysis; the
interacting roles of climate variability and land use change on hydrologic
processes; or physical models of ecohydrologic and hydropedologic processes
from the plot to the global scale.

The successful candidate will complement existing research clusters and
establish an externally- funded, internationally recognized research
program. Teaching duties include undergraduate and graduate courses in the
candidate's area of expertise.

Review of applicants will begin on October 15, 2015 and continue until the
position is filled. A PhD is required at the time of appointment, with the
position scheduled to begin in Fall 2016, subject to budgetary approval.
Please apply online to: https://facultysearch.as.pitt.edu/apply/index/OTY=.
Applications should include: 1) a cover letter; 2) a CV; 3) statements of
research and teaching interests; 4) names and contact information of four
references; and 5) copies of three relevant publications. Direct questions
to the Search Committee Chair, Dr. Daniel Bain, dbainpitt.edu,
412-624-8766. The University of Pittsburgh is an Affirmative Action/Equal
Opportunity Employer and values equality of opportunity, human dignity and
diversity.

The University of Pittsburgh is the fifth largest recipient of federally
sponsored research funding among U.S. universities and has $900 million in
annual research and development expenditures. Located in an urban setting,
the University campus offers easy access to potential research, teaching
and outreach venues including the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, the
Carnegie Science Center, several urban watersheds, and proximity to
long-term experimental catchments (Fernow, West Virginia). Pittsburgh is
experiencing a “green renaissance” and is consistently ranked among the top
places to live, work, and visit in the U.S.

applications for a tenure-track position at the assistant professor
level to expand and enhance our current research expertise in Geoscience
and Environmental Sustainability. We seek an individual working on
global-scale issues that tie geoscience research to quantitative
sustainability themes.Research directions that integrate well with
current departmental expertise include, but are not limited to, global
geospatial analysis, remote sensing of atmospheric composition and
natural disasters, climate change and glacial processes, and the
relationship between hydrology, geomorphology, (bio)geochemistry in
coupled natural-human systems.

We are particularly interested in individuals that integrate
quantitative field measurements with emerging research tools such as
climate change/geohazard related modeling using orbital/airborne LiDAR

modeling/measurements of regional to global-scale atmospheric fluxes.It
is expected that this hire will strengthen our existing
interdisciplinary collaborations with local and regional institutions
including the Mascaro Center for Sustainability and Innovation at the
University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, the DOE-National
Energy and Technology Laboratory, and the NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop an active,
externally funded research program, including the supervision of M.S.

[ECOLOG-L] Urban Session at Fall 2012 AGU Meeting

2012-07-05 Thread Dan Bain

Hi all,

We are convening a session on urban systems at the fall AGU meeting and
encourage all who are interested in presenting findings at urban/water
interfaces to submit to the session. We hope to bring together a wide
variety of perspectives and findings.

For information on submitting an abstract, please visit the AGU meeting
website: http://fallmeeting.agu.org/2012/

Important Dates:
Abstract submission deadline: August 8, 2012
Meeting Dates: December 3-7, 2012 (San Francisco, CA)

Session Info
(http://fallmeeting.agu.org/2012/session-search/single/water-quality-and-quantity-in-urban-systems/):

H088: Water Quality and Quantity in Urban Systems:

The migration of the world’s population into cities has profound
implications for urban waters. Public health challenges and
infrastructure crises have increased scrutiny of urban hydrology and
identified new research areas. Drainage systems for urbanized areas
modify the hydrograph and alter the geomorphology, yet may bypass
important hotspots that might ameliorate contamination. Compounding
these effects, the political power of cities often diverts water
resources from adjacent less populated basins, resulting in further
hydrologic changes. This session welcomes research on all aspects of
urban water. Studies that report new monitoring efforts, compare modeled
and measured results, or propose new theoretical approaches are encouraged.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact my
co-conveners (Claire Welty wel...@umbc.edu, Brad Eck
bradleyj...@gmail.com, William Hunt bill_h...@ncsu.edu ) or me.

Best and hope to see you in December,
Dan
