[ECOLOG-L] Guide to bird pecking patterns on tree bark?
Hi: For years, I have noticed small subcircular (in profile) seemingly pecking marks on different trees. I have always assumed those marks are caused by bird, perhaps sapsuckers. [ECOLOG-L] Textbook recommendation - emphasis in biodiversity, non-science majors
Textbook recommendation - emphasis in biodiversity, non-science majors Dear Colleagues: Every year I teach a ("lecture" only, no labs) biodiversity course for non-science majors and, embarrassingly (for me), generally for most students it is a disaster in terms of learning, as reflected in exam scores, etc. Do any of you know of a biodiversity textbook, say 15-20 chapters long, written for non-science majors. Little by little, my own worksheets with illustrations are becoming the textbook but until then, I rather have students buy a used but decent textbook at their level. Dear Colleagues: Who coined the phrase Dyar's Rule/Law? Background follows. In *The number of molts of lepidopterous larvae*, Dyar (1890) proposed a simple relationship, in mathematics known as a geometric progression, between the linear dimensions of hardened, or sclerotized, structures in moth and butterfly larvae as they grow by molting during their discontinuous development. This constant rate of size increase model, which has become known as Dyar’s Rule or Dyar’s Law. But who coined the phrase Dyar's Rule/Law? Note, I have already communicated with two experts on Dyar. As the label preparation process is well-advanced, we are planning on the next step: placing sticky labels that are printer friendly for glass slides. Can I receive recommendations of sticky materials suitable for labels that is printer friendly? Note, the place where the label would go slides can have a frosted surface, a frosted white surface, no frosted surface but all have the wax writing. Concerning the wax, we can either place the label on the other side of the slide, remove most of the wax with ethanol, or place the label on top of the wax writing. Any recommendations on this are also welcomed. My email is blayjo...@gmail.com Apologies for potential duplicate email. Gratefully, Jorge Jorge A. Santiago-Blay, PhD blaypublishers.com 1. [ECOLOG-L] Origins of distinctly diminished interdisciplinary communication?
Origins of distinctly diminished interdisciplinary communication? Dear Colleagues: Question: Does anyone has an idea on the origins of diminished interdisciplinary communication in many academic disciplines, including the subject matter of this listserver? Background: I just returned from a day-long professional meeting re. inclusion of the arts (*sensu lato*) in the teaching of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (= STEM). The meeting was fascinating and one of the reasons for that were the extended periods for discussions. One interesting discussion topic was the origin of diminished interdisciplinary communication. While in the so-called western world the second half of the 19th century approximately marks a rapid increase in scientific knowledge and consequently, new words, today, I learned that (supposedly) the distinctly diminished interdisciplinary communication comes later. Specifically, I was surprised by the comment of a participant expressing that such diminished communication may have been exacerbated by the emphasis in the purity of many disciplines (STEM or non-STEM). In turn, this purity may have been an effect of elitists ideologies, such as fascism. Are you aware of any scholarship in this topic? This is related to science (lack of) communication that I suspect many of us have experienced whereby scientists try to speak (or write) to impress instead of to communicate. In simpler words, since when was it has been "cool" to, given the increase in knowledge, to alienate through the use of intelligible language - instead of bringing together - people of different disciplines? With plenty of activities that foster critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, and all the buzzwords of value in pedagogy, etc. 5. [ECOLOG-L] Change in linear dimensions of soft tissues in larval insect when fixed
Change in linear dimensions of soft tissues in larval insect when fixed Dear Ecolog-Listers: I have nearly ca. 200 museum specimens of aquatic larval insects (1-3 cm long) that I assume were killed by dumping them in (at the minimum) 70% ethanol. I assume that several changes in ethanol 70% have taken place to refill vials, as needed, in the 48-77 years since the specimens have been dead. [ECOLOG-L] Phantom references? - parthenogenesis?
Phantom references? - parthenogenesis? Dear Colleagues: Yesterday, a librarian told me that one of the earliest references in parthenogenesis is a paper that does not exist (yes, you read it correctly, what the librarian called, a phantom reference). [ECOLOG-L] Query on authorship
Query on authorship Dear Colleagues: I am writing a small paper resulting from research done with two undergraduates many years ago (and, later on, involving several other colleagues using cutting-edge technology). As the results became obvious, both of the students agreed (orally, in person) with me that we should get the research published. As far as I remember, there was no email or letter documenting that and, there was no manuscript, only the data and the methods we were using. The problem: I have located one of the former students (now a researcher at a major research institution), who is excited about getting the research published, but not the second student. Question: How to handle the contribution (including authorship) of the other person? Here are some options I see. a. *Omit the name of the person that has not been located* and indicate that another person was involved in the data collection but we were hot able to locate him/her to get his/her approval to use his/her name as an author. Under these circumstances, would it be OK to name the person in the Acknowledgments? Lately, I am asking permission to do that because sometimes some people prefer to remain anonymous. b. *Include the name of the person I cannot locate as an author*, an act of fairness and good faith on my part. If the person does not like the idea (and the paper is published) retract the name of the person in an erratum, later on, and assume responsibility for my error. A kind colleague did that to me once and, subsequently, it has resulted a long standing collaboration (and co-authorship in many papers, with my knowledge) :) c. *Nor use the data garnered by the person I cannot locate*. Although I am pretty sure I am authorized by the institution to use the data, as a general personal; preference, I like to ask permission. If you have something constructive to comment, kindly direct your comments to me, blayjo...@gmail.com , Apologies for potential duplicate emails. Sincerely, Jorge Jorge A. [ECOLOG-L] Counterpart of efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI) and efficiency of conversion of food digested (ECD) if using wet weight?
Dear Colleagues: Is/are there a counterpart of efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI) and efficiency of conversion of food digested (ECD) if one only has wet weights? Background follows: We have *wet* mass of larva on say a day 1, mass (directly measured or estimated via leaf area eaten) of food eaten, and mass of larva on day 2. *Summary of Environmental Science(s) books resulting from recent inquire* Not clear to me (Jorge) is whether the online resources are available only at the publisher’s site, requiring yet another login and password, or whether they are available for use at the schools’ class management platforms. Also, the make a new issue of Miller each year (or most years), so you can inform students of this and when they buy older issues, just tell them the chapter name rather than number. All they do is move stuff around, separate the chapters or combine chapters. The content doesn't change substantially!“ 03. Dear Ecolog-Listers: I thought finding hits for the food of adult (wasps) *Sphex pensylvanicus* (note, no double "n" although the state of Pennsylvania has a double "n") would be easy. Well, not so far. [ECOLOG-L] Water use in chocolate
Dear Ecolog-Listers: A colleague who prefers to remain anonymous sent this message, re. use of water in chocolate production. Apologies for potential duplicate emails. With gratefulness, Jorge *** Hi Jorge - Don't know of how much you this will be to you but I recently led a number of tutorials on water use and water conservation. Below is a link from a website we had students refer to when preparing for the tutorial. cheers Mark http://waterfootprint.org/en/resources/interactive-tools/product-gallery/ On average, cocoa beans have a water footprint of 20,000 litre/kg. Cocoa beans are first made into cocoa paste, with cocoa shells as rest product. About 97% of the total water footprint of cocoa beans is allocated to the cocoa paste that is derived from the beans; the rest is attributed to the by-products. One kilogram of cocoa beans gives about 800 gram of paste, so that the water footprint of cocoa paste is about 24,000 litre/kg. Cocoa paste is separated into cocoa butter and cocoa powder. About 66% of the water footprint of cocoa paste is allocated to the cocoa butter and 34% to the cocoa powder (this attribution is done based on the relative value of the two products). One kilogram cocoa paste gives 470 gram cocoa butter and 530 gram cocoa powder. On the basis of these figures we calculate that cocoa butter has a water footprint of 34,000 litre/kg and cocoa powder a water footprint of 15,600 litre/kg. When we assume that chocolate consists of 40% cocoa paste (with a water footprint of 24,000 litre/kg), 20% cocoa butter (34,000 litre/kg) and 40% cane sugar (1800 litre/kg), we can calculate that chocolate has a water footprint of about 17,000 litre/kg. A 100-gram chocolate bar costs 1700 litres. This is the global average; the figure in a specific case will depend on the precise origin of the cocoa and the production circumstances Publications 2011 Mekonnen, M.M. and Hoekstra, A.Y. [ECOLOG-L] Carnivory and herbivory
Dear Ecolog-Listers: In one of my courses, we'll discuss nutrition and, inevitably carnivory and herbivory. Question: Can someone suggest science-based, intelligible web sources that discuss this topic. Background: For years, I have looked into this and the basic story (at least for humans) seems to be that animal food on the average has a fuller complement of aminoacids (particularly the so-called essential ones) than non-animal foods. Yet, thus far, in none of the places consulted, the chemical transformations of some aminoacids into others are addressed. In other words, can the so-called essential aminoacids be produced chemically in the body (or by symbionts) by chemically altering non-essential aminoacids? Clearly, those mechanisms must exist in 100% herbivorous organisms. If you have some constructive suggestions, please email me directly: blayjo...@gmail.com Gratefully, Jorge Jorge A. [ECOLOG-L] The K of carrying capacity and Roman numerals of survivorship curves
Dear Ecolog-Listers; For years, I have wondered (sometimes aloud in my classes as students know I like history) about the history of two ecology conventions. 1. Where does the K in "carrying capacity" comes from? I am aware of the origins of the concept (http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/00045600701734356 <https://webaccess.si.edu/owa/redir.aspx?SURL=3LuKtVx2SoqLbG_ubJxITNwuQvX0WlQzFExwLXIf5XpYb4JjGyjTCGgAdAB0AHAAOgAvAC8AZAB4AC4AZABvAGkALgBvAHIAZwAvADEAMAAuADEAMAA4ADAALwAwADAAMAA0ADUANgAwADAANwAwADEANwAzADQAMwA1ADYA&URL=http%3a%2f%2fdx.doi.org%2f10.1080%2f00045600701734356>) but I am not sure about the origin of the K. Is the K for constant (Konstant in German, in the mid 19th century German was the "in" language for scholarly communications in the sciences) or is K for Kapacita"t (capacity in German). 2. Is there a reason for the positioning of the Roman numerals I, II, II on survivorship curves (or functional response curves). Why is the I on the top one (e.g. modern human and other organisms having a long life, or like MLK said "longevity") instead of the bottom one? My only guess has always been, well it is either I-II-II or III-II-I. In other words, one of the two was chosen. But, heavens knows, maybe there was a reason. Sincerely and gratefully, Jorge Jorge A. [ECOLOG-L] Listserver recommendations
Dear Ecolog Listers: I have two requests for listserver recommendations: 1. From time to time, I come across concepts in biology where I suspect there is an interesting historical background. While I am subscribed to a few listservers in history, can someone recommend a few active listservers in *history of science* maybe just *history of biology*? 2. Being a firm believer that if I think of something it is likely that someone else before me has thought about that and, importantly, that there is a solution, I wonder of there are listservers for computer applications. For example, I have my digital life in several flash drives, etc. Earlier today, I asked local computer gurus if they knew of expeditious (of course, I know manual) ways to consolidate all of those files into one (with a backup). The answer made me want a "second opinion". Any suggestion of listservers that would have folks interested in answering the general question, is there a faster (and better, cheaper, etc.) way of doing such and such will be appreciated. Please, feel free to email any constructive suggestions to: blayjo...@gmail.com Gratefully, Jorge Jorge A. Santiago-Blay, PhD blaypublishers.com 1.
