[ECOLOG-L] Guide to bird pecking patterns on tree bark?

2017-04-30 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Hi:

For years, I have noticed small subcircular (in profile) seemingly pecking
marks on different trees. I have always assumed those marks are caused by
bird, perhaps sapsuckers. Is there a guide to bird pecking patterns on tree
bark? In the absence of a direct observation of the feathery culprit, it
would be nice to narrow the identification.

[ECOLOG-L] Textbook recommendation - emphasis in biodiversity, non-science majors

Textbook recommendation - emphasis in biodiversity, non-science majors

Dear Colleagues:

Every year I teach a ("lecture" only, no labs) biodiversity course for
non-science majors and, embarrassingly (for me), generally for most
students it is a disaster in terms of learning, as reflected in exam
scores, etc.

Do any of you know of a biodiversity textbook, say 15-20 chapters long,
written for non-science majors. Little by little, my own worksheets with
illustrations are becoming the textbook but until then, I rather have
students buy a used but decent textbook at their level. An example of what
I mean is the simple language in "Animals without Backbones".

Is there something like this for all biodiversity? If you have constructive
suggestions, please send them directly to me:

As part of my research, I would like to visit botanical gardens/arboreta in

Ideally, the gardens/arboreta:

1. Located in the southern hemisphere.

2. Are old (say, at least 30 years) and have a high (identified via labels)
biodiversity (ideally worldwide but emphasizing the region in which they
are located).

3. Somehow associated with a university.

4. Have a very strong outreach/education mission.

5. Relatively easy to collect (in terms of bureaucratic paperwork).

I would prefer to receive recommendations (positive and negative) of likely
institutions that may fit my desiderata. If you have constructive

A former biology student of mine is now in a PhD program and is taking a

needed (ideally in EXCEL) must be/have:

a. 1,000 (or more) cases (rows) large

b. Have, at least, two ordinal variables, 2 nominal variables, and 2 ratio
variables (if not ratios, then regular counts or measurements that can be
changed into ratios).

c. Be on some sort of educational topic (ideally, but not necessarily, in
ecology). I have large data sets but not educational.

[ECOLOG-L] Who coined the phrase Dyar's Rule/Law?

2017-02-04 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Colleagues:

Who coined the phrase Dyar's Rule/Law? Background follows.

In *The number of molts of lepidopterous larvae*, Dyar (1890) proposed a
simple relationship, in mathematics known as a geometric progression,
between the linear dimensions of hardened, or sclerotized, structures in
moth and butterfly larvae as they grow by molting during their
discontinuous development. This constant rate of size increase model, which has
become known as Dyar’s Rule or Dyar’s Law.

But who coined the phrase Dyar's Rule/Law? Note, I have already

[ECOLOG-L] Request for help for a biological illustrator

Dear Colleagues:

I am trying to help a colleague, Dino Pulerà, who is a scientific

his copyrighted images are posted on a website – as I understand the
situation - without his permission. Here's a link to the
site with the posted images:

https://www.studyblue.com/notes/note/n/lab-3-shark-nervous-system/deck/14338345

Dino has already contacted a lawyer for assistance. He sent a cease and
desist letter a couple of times to the company, Study Blue, but the memos
were ignored. The lawyer said that if Dino wants to pursue this further
he would have to contact an attorney in California or Wisconsin because
that's where this company operates.

Has anyone had similar experiences? If so, how did you stop the
unauthorized use of your work and / or receive compensation? Can anyone
recommend a lawyer for this case? Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated. If so, please contact Dino directly at d_pul...@hotmail.com

Hello:

Can you recommend one or more colleagues (name and functional emails) who
work on SE Asian butterflies and would be willing to review a short paper
submitted to my peer-reviewed, scientific journal *Life: The Excitement of
Biology* (https://blaypublishers). While names come to mind right away for
colleagues, they seem to concentrate mostly in New World butterflies.

Your suggestions of trustworthy, knowledgeable, constructive, and fast

Suggestions on sticky labels that are printer friendly for glass slides

Dear Colleagues:

Several students and I have been preparing glass slides with temporary (wax
pencil) labels. As the label preparation process is well-advanced, we are
planning on the next step: placing sticky labels that are printer friendly
for glass slides.

Can I receive recommendations of sticky materials suitable for labels that
is printer friendly? Note, the place where the label would go slides can
have a frosted surface, a frosted white surface, no frosted surface but all
have the wax writing. Concerning the wax, we can either place the label on
the other side of the slide, remove most of the wax with ethanol, or place
the label on top of the wax writing. Any recommendations on this are also
welcomed.

[ECOLOG-L] Origins of distinctly diminished interdisciplinary communication?

2016-10-29 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Origins of distinctly diminished interdisciplinary communication?

Dear Colleagues:

Question: Does anyone has an idea on the origins of diminished
interdisciplinary communication in many academic disciplines, including the
subject matter of this listserver?

Background: I just returned from a day-long professional meeting re.
inclusion of the arts (*sensu lato*) in the teaching of science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics (= STEM). The meeting was
fascinating and one of the reasons for that were the extended periods for
discussions. One interesting discussion topic was the origin of diminished
interdisciplinary communication.

While in the so-called western world the second half of the 19th century
approximately marks a rapid increase in scientific knowledge and
consequently, new words, today, I learned that (supposedly) the distinctly
diminished interdisciplinary communication comes later. Specifically, I was
surprised by the comment of a participant expressing that such diminished
communication may have been exacerbated by the emphasis in the purity of
many disciplines (STEM or non-STEM). In turn, this purity may have been an
effect of elitists ideologies, such as fascism.

Are you aware of any scholarship in this topic? This is related to science
(lack of) communication that I suspect many of us have experienced whereby
scientists try to speak (or write) to impress instead of to communicate. In
simpler words, since when was it has been "cool" to, given the increase in
knowledge, to alienate through the use of intelligible language - instead
of bringing together - people of different disciplines?

1. 15-20 chapters, well illustrated, interactive, etc. (= with all the
bells and whistles of *intuitive* technology, ideally no logins/passwords,
in other words, as I like to say, ideally, no thinking about technology
required to access the sites, etc.).

2. Intends to communicate (as contrasted to impress) readers.

3. With an international emphasis (as contrasted to emphasis on the USA).

4. With plenty of activities that foster critical thinking, quantitative
reasoning, and all the buzzwords of value in pedagogy, etc.

5. With due respect to the history of ideas (as contrasted to an
ahistorical approach) as well as the social sciences/humanities.

[ECOLOG-L] A couple of interesting environmental toxicology questions

Dear Colleagues:

In class today, I was asked questions that prompted me to inquire to you:

1. Can radon gas somehow be chemically transformed and sequestered into a

2. While venoms are injected (e.g. snakes, etc.), poisons enter the body in
other ways. Say a person injects a chemical normally considered a poison,
would it make it a venom (and vice-versa)? To me, not because the concept
is developed under typical "natural" circumstances. However, I am willing
to be corrected.

[ECOLOG-L] Looking for a paper

Looking for a paper

Dear Colleagues:

Two major library searches by two different institutions and years of
looking by a very competent librarian, still unable to find the reference
below:

Cunha, A. and W. E. Kerr. 1957. A genetical theory to explain
sex-determination by arrhenotocous parthenogenesis.Forma et functio

Does anyone have this reference? More broadly, does this reference exist?

If anyone has a constructive suggestion, please email it to me directly,

[ECOLOG-L] Request for recommendations for survey tools that are easy to use, free, and generate graphs automatically

2016-10-01 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Colleagues:

Soon, I (and perhaps a few other colleagues) will launch a little
questionnaire via listservers, social media, etc. on teaching ecology
issues.

Ideally,

a. I would to use a free tool that is intuitive (= optimally, no reading of
the instructions needed, like the concept map program,* Inspiration*,
immediate gratification) and powerful (e.g. if someone answers a, send the
person to question z, just like in a taxonomic key or allows drop down
menus to be inserted) in preparing the questions and the overall structure
of the questionnaire.

b. collects the data and automatically (ideally) dumps it into an
Excel-like spreadsheet (even better if it generates the graphs).

Question: is there anything like that available (reasonable facsimiles
welcomed).

If you have any constructive suggestions, please kindly email me directly:

[ECOLOG-L] Change in linear dimensions of soft tissues in larval insect when fixed

Change in linear dimensions of soft tissues in larval insect when fixed

Dear Ecolog-Listers:

I have nearly ca. 200 museum specimens of aquatic larval insects (1-3 cm
long) that I assume were killed by dumping them in (at the minimum) 70%
ethanol. In the only one case that the label states anything about
preservation method, it reads "KAAD --> 95%". I assume that several changes
in ethanol 70% have taken place to refill vials, as needed, in the 48-77
years since the specimens have been dead.

Question: While the hard body parts will barely change in dimension with
time, does anyone know how does the softer body parts change in size? Is
there any variation in size change whether the preservation took place
early or late in the instar?

[ECOLOG-L] Query on authorship

2016-08-20 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Query on authorship

Dear Colleagues:

I am writing a small paper resulting from research done with two
undergraduates many years ago (and, later on, involving several other
colleagues using cutting-edge technology). As the results became obvious,
both of the students agreed (orally, in person) with me that we should get
the research published. As far as I remember, there was no email or letter
documenting that and, there was no manuscript, only the data and the
methods we were using.

The problem: I have located one of the former students (now a researcher at
a major research institution), who is excited about getting the research
published, but not the second student.

Question: How to handle the contribution (including authorship) of the
other person? Here are some options I see.

a. *Omit the name of the person that has not been located* and indicate
that another person was involved in the data collection but we were hot
able to locate him/her to get his/her approval to use his/her name as an
author. Under these circumstances, would it be OK to name the person in
the Acknowledgments? Lately, I am asking permission to do that because
sometimes some people prefer to remain anonymous.

b. *Include the name of the person I cannot locate as an author*, an act of
fairness and good faith on my part. If the person does not like the idea
(and the paper is published) retract the name of the person in an erratum,
later on, and assume responsibility for my error. A kind colleague did that
to me once and, subsequently, it has resulted a long standing collaboration
(and co-authorship in many papers, with my knowledge) :)

c. *Nor use the data garnered by the person I cannot locate*. Although I am
pretty sure I am authorized by the institution to use the data, as a
general personal; preference, I like to ask permission.

If you have something constructive to comment, kindly direct your comments
to me, blayjo...@gmail.com ,

Dear Colleagues:

Is/are there a counterpart of efficiency of conversion of ingested food
(ECI) and efficiency of conversion of food digested (ECD) if one only has
wet weights? Background follows:

We have *wet* mass of larva on say a day 1, mass (directly measured or
estimated via leaf area eaten) of food eaten, and mass of larva on day 2.
These we have for 30 or so larvae for one or two days. However, because I
was interested in rearing the organism, I did not dry them up, which (as I
understand it) is the typical way ECI and ECD are calculated. Do you know
if there is/are counterparts of ECI or ECD if one is using wet weights?

Dear Colleagues:

For years, Dr. Joseph Lambert, myself, and collaborators, have been
studying plant exudates (the gooey stuff that many plants ooze), copal,
amber, and other such hardened materials of botanical origin using nuclear
magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). If your collection (or you
personally) have or know of other such entities that may have, could you
send me an email of the list to

Importantly,
a. analyses only need 100 milligrams (roughly, the volume of a new eraser

b. although samples are pulverized, they are not chemically altered and can
be returned, if requested.

If interested, I will send links to additional recent publications.

02. Miller, G. T. – Living in the Environment – 18th Edition

A respondent shared this view (herein reproduced with permission): “Most
people use the Miller text. I don't like it, but there really has not been
a much better version. I find it to be to swayed to biology. Maybe I need
to write one! Also, the make a new issue of Miller each year (or most
years), so you can inform students of this and when they buy older issues,
just tell them the chapter name rather than number. All they do is move

doesn't change substantially!“

personal option as most of my students would not access the site for

the information is presented in a way that is not "meaty." I am able to

[ECOLOG-L] Environmental Sciences book recommendation

Dear Ecolog-Listers:

I teach a one-semester course in environmental sciences for non-science

One of those areas of likely change is changing the textbook we use into
one that non-only emphasizes *science* in a readable way for intelligent
people who want to learn that also incorporates

a. a global perspective (= not only the USA)

b. a diversity of perspectives (= not only, on the average, things are
improving, in other words, a finer detail showing that still there is a lot
to be done)

c. non-(hard)science (e.g. the social sciences and the humanities)

[ECOLOG-L] Images of Deinopis lamia and Miagrammopes syriacus (Araneae: Deinopidae)

2016-04-09 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Ecolog-Listers:

I am trying to help a group of authors who are about to send me a paper for
possible publication in my journal. The senior author needs better images
than what they took of two credibly-identified (and provenanced deinopid
spiders), namely *Deinopis lamia * and *Miagrammopes syriacus. *The authors
(and then I) have already checked the web and contacted someone requesting
permission.

If you have any such images (or any constructive suggestion), suitable for
publication, please feel free to contact me directly off the list.

blayjo...@gmail.com

Of course, the authors have revisited the site several times and, as usual,
Murphy has lurked its ugly head: 0 spiders to be images. Apologies for
potential duplicate emails.

Gratefully,

Jorge

[ECOLOG-L] Water use in chocolate

2016-04-03 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Ecolog-Listers:

water in chocolate production.

Apologies for potential duplicate emails.

***

Hi Jorge -
Don't know of how much you this will be to you but I recently led a number
of tutorials on water use and water conservation. Below is a link from a
website we had students refer to when preparing for the tutorial.
cheers
Mark

http://waterfootprint.org/en/resources/interactive-tools/product-gallery/
On average, cocoa beans have a water footprint of 20,000 litre/kg. Cocoa
beans are first made into cocoa paste, with cocoa shells as rest product.
About 97% of the total water footprint of cocoa beans is allocated to the
cocoa paste that is derived from the beans; the rest is attributed to the
by-products. One kilogram of cocoa beans gives about 800 gram of paste, so
that the water footprint of cocoa paste is about 24,000 litre/kg. Cocoa
paste is separated into cocoa butter and cocoa powder. About 66% of the
water footprint of cocoa paste is allocated to the cocoa butter and 34% to
the cocoa powder (this attribution is done based on the relative value of
the two products). One kilogram cocoa paste gives 470 gram cocoa butter and
530 gram cocoa powder. On the basis of these figures we calculate that
cocoa butter has a water footprint of 34,000 litre/kg and cocoa powder a
water footprint of 15,600 litre/kg.

When we assume that chocolate consists of 40% cocoa paste (with a water
footprint of 24,000 litre/kg), 20% cocoa butter (34,000 litre/kg) and 40%
cane sugar (1800 litre/kg), we can calculate that chocolate has a water
footprint of about 17,000 litre/kg.

A 100-gram chocolate bar costs 1700 litres. This is the global average; the
figure in a specific case will depend on the precise origin of the cocoa
and the production circumstances

[ECOLOG-L] Water use in making? chocolate

2016-04-02 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Ecolog-Listers:

Recently, as I was teaching about water conservation and use by different
human activities. As I was reviewing, I came across a graph that depicts
chocolate as a *huge* user of water. I assumed that it is the manufacturing
of chocolate (in contrast to watering cacao plants) the step that uses a
lot of water. I searched the web and asked a colleague who had been in
chocolatier school and did not get an answer.

If you have any constructive feedback, please, feel free to email it to me

[ECOLOG-L] ELLI-like instruments to measure resilience in life-long learning

2016-03-09 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Ecolog-Listers:

Two colleagues of mine and I completed a paper to measure seven (7)
dimensions of life-long learning in Environmental Sciences (willing to send
paper to anyone interested, no link available). We used ELLI (
http://www.elli.global/).

Now, we are specially interested in measuring *resilience* (ideally in the
context of learning environmental sciences) and I would like some
recommendations on affordable (or free) reliable and validated instruments
to test for resilience.

[ECOLOG-L] Carnivory and herbivory

2016-02-18 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Ecolog-Listers:

In one of my courses, we'll discuss nutrition and, inevitably carnivory and
herbivory.

Question: Can someone suggest science-based, intelligible web sources that
discuss this topic.

Background: For years, I have looked into this and the basic story (at
least for humans) seems to be that animal food on the average has a fuller
complement of aminoacids (particularly the so-called essential ones) than
non-animal foods. Yet, thus far, in none of the places consulted, the
chemical transformations of some aminoacids into others are addressed. In
other words, can the so-called essential aminoacids be produced chemically
in the body (or by symbionts) by chemically altering non-essential
aminoacids? Clearly, those mechanisms must exist in 100% herbivorous
organisms.

If you have some constructive suggestions, please email me directly:

[ECOLOG-L] The K of carrying capacity and Roman numerals of survivorship curves

2016-01-28 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Ecolog-Listers;

For years, I have wondered (sometimes aloud in my classes as students know
I like history) about the history of two ecology conventions.

1. Where does the K in "carrying capacity" comes from? I am aware of the
origins of the concept (http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/00045600701734356
<https://webaccess.si.edu/owa/redir.aspx?SURL=3LuKtVx2SoqLbG_ubJxITNwuQvX0WlQzFExwLXIf5XpYb4JjGyjTCGgAdAB0AHAAOgAvAC8AZAB4AC4AZABvAGkALgBvAHIAZwAvADEAMAAuADEAMAA4ADAALwAwADAAMAA0ADUANgAwADAANwAwADEANwAzADQAMwA1ADYA&URL=http%3a%2f%2fdx.doi.org%2f10.1080%2f00045600701734356>)
but I am not sure about the origin of the K. Is the K for constant
(Konstant in German, in the mid 19th century German was the "in" language
for scholarly communications in the sciences) or is K for Kapacita"t
(capacity in German).

2. Is there a reason for the positioning of the Roman numerals I, II, II on
survivorship curves (or functional response curves). Why is the I on the
top one (e.g. modern human and other organisms having a long life, or like
MLK said "longevity") instead of the bottom one? My only guess has always
been, well it is either I-II-II or III-II-I. In other words, one of the two
was chosen. But, heavens knows, maybe there was a reason.

Sincerely and gratefully,

Jorge

[ECOLOG-L] Barnacles and whales, commensalism?

Sometimes, the case of filter feeding barnacles that live on whales and

[ECOLOG-L] Listserver recommendations

2015-12-14 Thread Jorge A. Santiago-Blay
Dear Ecolog Listers:

I have two requests for listserver recommendations:

1. From time to time, I come across concepts in biology where I suspect
there is an interesting historical background. While I am subscribed to a
few listservers in history, can someone recommend a few active listservers
in *history of science* maybe just *history of biology*?

2. Being a firm believer that if I think of something it is likely that
someone else before me has thought about that and, importantly, that there
is a solution, I wonder of there are listservers for computer applications.
For example, I have my digital life in several flash drives, etc. Earlier
today, I asked local computer gurus if they knew of expeditious (of course,
I know manual) ways to consolidate all of those files into one (with a
backup). The answer made me want a "second opinion". Any suggestion of
listservers that would have folks interested in answering the general
question, is there a faster (and better, cheaper, etc.) way of doing such
and such will be appreciated.

Please, feel free to email any constructive suggestions to:
