We’re recruiting a Postdoctoral Associate to work on an NSF-funded study of 
albatross foraging energetics in relation to wind variability (School of Marine 
and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University). 

Brief Description of Duties:

The Senior Postdoctoral Associate will examine how oceanographic and 
atmospheric variability affect foraging habitat and energetics of albatrosses 
in the Southern Ocean. Analyses will focus on albatross tracking and 
accelerometry data and satellite environmental data. The incumbent will conduct 
field studies at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) research station at Bird 
Island, South Georgia in collaboration with scientists at BAS, and will prepare 
manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and will present at 
scientific conferences. A strong candidate will have excellent written 
communication skills as demonstrated by prior peer-reviewed publications. The 
selected candidate will need previous experience working at remote field sites.

The anticipated start is in summer of 2019 and the position is open until 
February 9.  
 
Required Qualifications:  

Ph.D. in biology, ecology, marine science or related field. Three (3) years of 
experience in biology, ecology, marine science or related field. Experience 
with advanced statistics. Experience programming in R, Matlab or other 
statistical languages. Experience handling and working with seabirds. Current 
bird banding license or the ability to obtain one within one (1) year of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:  

Experience working with the following: animal movement data, accelerometry 
data, and satellite data. Two (2) or more years of experience using advanced 
statistics. Excellence in the field as demonstrated by relevant publications. 
Prior experience writing proposals to attain external funding.

datasets on oceanographic and atmospheric conditions, nutrient dynamics and

develop an interdisciplinary, multi-trophic level ocean monitoring program in 
the New York Bight, provide information on the status of New York pelagic 
resources to managers and communicate this information to better inform 
decision making regionally and locally. The postdoc will be an integral part in 
evaluating and recommending a suite of indicators to monitor in the New York 
Bight.

Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in quantitative ecology, computer science, 
advanced statistics, fisheries science, or related field in hand by May 31, 
2019. Three (3) years of research experience. Experience with advanced 
statistics, programming in Matlab, R or other statistical coding languages. 
Experience working with ecological or oceanographic data.

Preferred Qualifications:
Two years of experience using advanced statistics. Excellence in the field as 
demonstrated by relevant peer-reviewed publications or Fellowship in population 
dynamics, quantitative ecology, computer science, statistics, or applied math. 
Experience with oceanographic data, working on oceanographic vessels and 
developing ecological indicators.

This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the 
overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to 
maintain FLSA exemption.

The postdoc will be employed by New York state with an annual salary of $50-60K 
depending on qualifications. This position is full-time for one year, with 
annual renewal of appointment conditional on the PR making satisfactory 
progress during the prior year(s) and continuation of funding. Start date is

Atlantic monitoring efforts. The postdoc will be an integral part in 
evaluating and recommending a suite of indicators to monitor in the New 
York Bight in the future.

Qualifications

· PhD degree in a relevant discipline, such as Ecology, Fisheries 
Science, Statistics, oceanography, or other related field.

· Experience with statistical modeling and statistical analyses is 
required. Experience with R, Matlab and ArcGIS is preferred.

· Strong written and oral communication skills, as evidenced preferably 
through publications in the peer-reviewed scientific literature and 
presentations to a variety of audiences

· Strong interpersonal skills and experience in field work, especially 
on oceanographic vessels is preferred.

I am looking for a highly motivated PhD student with experience in 
programming and statistical modeling to work in my lab on an NSF-funded study 
of North Pacific albatross foraging energetics in relation to wind 
variability. The student will lead analyses of albatross movement, behavior 
and energetic expenditure, and will conduct field studies at Midway Atoll in 
the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Preferred qualifications/ skills include 
an MSc in Biology or a related field and experience working with movement 
data and statistics in R or Matlab. Experience handling birds and working at 
remote field sites would be advantageous but is not required. The anticipated

Tenure Track Faculty Position in Marine Conservation Ecology

The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) at Stony Brook 
University invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in 
marine conservation ecology to begin as early as Fall 2016. We are 
especially interested in candidates who utilize innovative quantitative 
approaches in an area such as systems ecology and modeling, molecular 
genetics, resource management, fisheries ecology, population and 
community dynamics, ecotoxicology, or statistical modeling.  Successful 
candidates are expected to develop an independent externally funded 
research program, to teach and direct research at both the undergraduate 
and graduate levels, and participate in school and university services. 
All candidates must have a Ph.D. in a field related to conservation 
ecology and have demonstrated excellence in research and a strong 
commitment to teaching. The position will be filled at the Assistant 
Professor level.  Review of applications will begin April 15, 2016, but
