The laboratory of Dr. Nathaniel Weston in the Department of Geography and the Environment at Villanova University will host a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) student during summer 2018. REU internships are funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support active research participation of undergraduate students. The REU student will develop an independent research project focused on coastal ecosystems ecology, and will participate in field trips to tidal marsh research sites in Plum Island Sound, MA and Delaware River, NJ. Eligibility and Requirements: REU applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the U.S., completed one or more years of college but not received a Bachelor’s degree, have completed some coursework relevant to related to the REU program, and have plans to pursue a career in environmental research. Applicants must confirm that they are able to participate in the entire program (June 4 – August 10). The summer intern should expect to participate in physically strenuous field research in sometimes uncomfortable conditions (muddy, buggy, hot). Program: The REU intern will receive a stipend of $5000 for the summer. Housing on Villanova’s campus and a meal plan will be provided. The program runs from June 4 – August 10 (10 weeks). The intern will participate in the on-campus professional development activities administered by the Villanova Center for Research and Fellowships that includes social events and workshops on topics including the responsible conduct of research, fellowships in the STEM fields, networking, science writing, and delivering effective presentations. Villanova University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences invites applications for a Mendel Science Experience Post-doctoral Fellow. The Fellows program is designed to enhance the College’s teaching of science to non-science majors through the Mendel Science Experience program and to foster the professional development of recent Ph.D. recipients on a career path leading to faculty positions. Positions are 50:50 teaching and research. Fellows will team-teach a non-science-majors course with their faculty mentor as well as upper level undergraduate course, will conduct research in collaboration with the faculty mentor, and will have opportunities to supervise undergraduate research. The position begins in August 2011. Applicants who have an interest in research focused on the response of tidal marshes to climate change and land use alterations are encouraged to apply to work with Nathaniel Weston in the Department of Geography and the Environment. We’re especially interested in the response of microbial and plant communities to rising sea-levels and salt-water intrusion, changing organic matter sequestration and sediment accretion rates, and the resultant alterations to ecosystem function. I teach a Mendel Science Experience course focused on climate change. Ecosystem Ecology Research Technician Position, Villanova University
The Ecosystem Ecology Research Technician primarily will assist the Postdoc and Project Manager with coordination and technical assistance for a federally-funded grant to examine the role of climate change-induced, salt- water intrusion into freshwater tidal marshes in the Delaware River. The successful applicant will perform routine procedures in soil and water analyses for nutrients, gaseous C and N fluxes, and microbial dynamics in these ecosystems. The position includes but is not exclusive to extensive laboratory and field work, general laboratory maintenance, ordering supplies, glassware reparation/washing, training undergraduate students, and operating and towing a boat. Experience with nutrient analyses, liquid and gas chromatography, elemental analyzers, and various chemical digestions, is highly desirable. Position requires a B.S./B.A. in biology/chemistry or related field within biogeochemistry, marine, freshwater or environmental sciences. The applicant should possess excellent organization skills, must work well with others, and function as an integral part of a research team. Salary starts at 31K but can be adjusted based on experience.
