Songbird Field Technicians (3 positions) Come study songbird ecology and behavior in the scenic Hudson Valley (upstate NY) at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies (http://www.ecostudies.org/), as part of a project funded by the National Science Foundation through Texas Tech University. We are seeking motivated research technicians to assist with our long-term study on the breeding ecology of veeries and ovenbirds and vocal communication and mating strategies in the veery. Positions run from ~May 5th until July 15th, 2012. Stipends vary from $1800 - $2,400/month depending on qualifications and position (see below). Housing at the Cary Institute is reserved for these positions. Lead Banding Technician (1 opening). Responsibilities: lead and organize our banding program consisting of: mist netting (target netting), bird banding, bleeding, morphometric measures, and data entry. Qualifications: Prior experience with mist netting and handling/banding birds is a must, as is the ability to carry 10-15lbs of equipment through hilly forested terrain. Leadership and organizational skills are also essential for this position. General Technicians (nest searching, banding, song recording) (2 openings). Responsibilities: Nest searching, veery and ovenbird nest monitoring, song recording, mist-netting, re-sighting color-banded banded birds, data entry. Qualifications: prior experience nest-searching and/or spotting color-banded songbirds is preferred. Title: Research Field Technician (BIRDS) (Classification: Temporary/Seasonal Positions) Agency: Texas Tech University Location: Pampa, northern Texas Job Description: Come experience spring migration on the Texas High Plains! FIELD TECHNICIANs are needed to assist a graduate student with field surveys of grassland birds in northern Texas. The project will explore occupancy, density and other patterns as they relate to wind energy development. The position is scheduled to start March 1 (flexible) and continue for 4 months, with a possible opportunity for extension. The schedule for weekly field work may vary from 5-7 days a week of survey with the majority of surveys conducted between sunrise and noon, weather permitting. Data QA/QC and entry is expected daily after field surveys are complete. Primary duties will include conducting avian point count and line-transect surveys; avian flight path and behavioral surveys; habitat mapping and verification surveys; entering and proofing data. Exposure to GIS will be available depending on interest/experience. Prior to surveys, you will receive field methods for review, on-site training will be provided and you will be expected to adhere to survey protocols. Qualifications: * Minimum of two field seasons conducting avian-related field work. * Successful candidates must have experience in grassland bird identification (passerines, waterfowl, raptors, shorebirds) by both sight and sound. A keen eye and sharp ear is needed. * Must be able to read and interpret topographic maps and operate a GPS, compass, rangefinder and clinometer (not necessarily all at the same time..). * In order to operate field vehicles, a valid and reasonably clean drivers license is required. No DUIs. * Ability to work independently while maintaining good communication with field supervisor is essential. * Must have an attention to detail, meticulous data recording skills and ability to adhere to survey protocols. *Ability to work in variable temperatures that may range 32 - 100 F. * Preference will be given to those with a B.S. degree or higher in a wildlife management, biology, or a related field, but everyone possessing the criteria listed above are encouraged to apply. Seeking Graduate (PhD and MS) Students in Behavioral Ecology and Avian Population Ecology - I am recruiting graduate students into my lab at Texas Tech University to work on songbird populations in the scenic Hudson Valley of New York. Work is funded by the National Science Foundation through at least 2013. Our current focus is on how birds use public, private, past and/or current information of predator abundance and reproductive success to select breeding territories and avoid predators. Opportunities exist to build on this research theme or initiate new studies in the fields of behavioral and/or population ecology, including avian communication. Funding for research and teaching assistantships are available to help support students. SEASONAL RESEARCH ASSISTANTS in songbird behavioral ecology (multiple positions) to work on songbird populations in the scenic Hudson Valley in New York. Spring 2008 will start a 5-yr study on territorial settlement in songbirds in relationship to spatial and temporal patterns of predator abundance and avian breeding success. Multiple research assistants are needed to initiate work on color banding veeries and ovenbirds and monitor reproductive success at the main field site on property of the Institute of Ecosystem Studies, Millbrook, NY. Duties consist of nest searching and monitoring, mist-netting, and bird banding. Experience in these skills is highly desirable, but training is provided for those with less experience. The position is full-time and will cover the period from ~ May 5 through at least July 31 2008. Housing is available on-site at low rates. Applicants should have a strong work ethic and an appreciation for field work and be able to work both independently and in small groups. Field Assistant Needed: Behavioral Ecology of Songbirds
FIELD RESEARCH ASSISTANT (1) needed to assist on-going research on songbird (Veery, Ovenbird, Worm-eating Warbler) ecology at the Institute of Ecosystem Studies in the beautiful Hudson Valley in New York State. This project is focused on how songbirds acquire information regarding predator activity in order to make informed decision regarding territorial settlement or nest site selection. Primary duties will include nest searching, quantifying bird behavior, and assisting in field experiments. Additional duties may include point counts and banding; training will be provided as necessary. Applicants must be in good physical condition and have an excellent work ethic and an appreciation for ecological field work. The position covers the period from early May through July 2007.
