[ECOLOG-L] AGU Fall Meeting Session: Developing the Next-Generation of Sensors and Instruments for Application in the Biogeosciences
posting the following on behalf of the organizers: -- Dear Colleagues: We would like to encourage your participation in the session *Developing the Next-Generation of Sensors and Instruments for Application in the Biogeosciences* at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) national meeting on December 15-19, 2014 in San Francisco, CA. We want to hear about your adventures in developing and deploying commercial and advanced sensors and in developing networking capabilities in natural and human ecosystems. We appreciate your sharing this invitation with your colleagues, students, and listservers. Thank you, Stan, Yarom, and Melanie. *Developing the Next-Generation of Sensors and Instruments for Application in the Biogeosciences* Research in the biogeosciences is undergoing a revolution as collaborations are increasingly developed between geoscientists, ecologists, engineers, and information technologists. A common goal of these interactions is to better understand the functions of the Earth system across multiple spatial and temporal scales. While there has been some progress towards developing the *in situ* measurements needed to realize this goal, the convention of manually conducting measurements in the field, or field sampling followed by laboratory analysis is still common. However, advances in technology and interdisciplinary cooperation are changing this trend. This session will address how *instrumentation, sensor development, and low-power wireless communications* either now or in the future will enable a wide range of environmental monitoring applications. We encourage speakers to highlight how *new capabilities are transforming our ability to measure, monitor, detect, and quantify changes* in important physical, chemical, and biological processes in surface and subsurface environments. https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm14/webprogrampreliminary/Session2630.html *Co-Conveners:* Stan D. [ECOLOG-L] AGU session on Observations and model requirements for understanding drivers of disturbance processes in Arctic and Boreal terrestrial ecosystems
Dear Colleagues, I would like to draw your attention to a session that we are organizing during the AGU Fall meeting in San Francisco from Dec 9-13, 2013 on observation and model requirements for understanding drivers of disturbance processes in Arctic and Boreal ecosystems as detailed below. We hope you will consider submitting an abstract to this session if it falls within your research domain. *Session B052: Observations and model requirements for understanding drivers of disturbance processes in Arctic and Boreal terrestrial ecosystems * *Conveners:* Liza Jenkins, Michigan Tech Research Institute (llive...@mtu.edu); Santonu Goswami, Oak Ridge National Lab (goswa...@ornl.gov); Nancy French, Michigan Tech Research Institute (nancy.fre...@mtu.edu); Eric Kasischke, University of Maryland (ekasi...@umd.edu) *Description:* Current-generation Earth System Models do not well-represent key ecosystem processes in Arctic and Boreal ecosystems. A range of disturbance processes across the press (e.g. permafrost thaw) to pulse (e.g. fire, insects, and thermokarst) spectrum are causing widespread changes to ecosystem function in these ecosystems. Organizing existing and new data collections within a synthesis framework will facilitate incorporating these processes and their feedbacks in modeling applications and for understanding disturbance for land management. Our session invites papers involving observational, experimental, remote sensing and modeling studies characterizing these disturbance processes and their impacts on the key components of Arctic-Boreal system. Abstract submission is already open and the deadline is August 6, 2013. We hope to see you in San Francisco. Sincerely, Santonu - Santonu Goswami, PhD Climate Change Science Institute Environmental Sciences Division Oak Ridge National Laboratory Oak Ridge, TN 37830 Ph. + 1 865 241 1296 Web: https://sites.google.com/site/santonu/ --

[ECOLOG-L] Next Generation Ecologists in Global Change Research: Current Status and Future Directions workshop in the 98th ESA Annual Meeting
The Climate Change Science Institute (CCSI) and the Environmental Sciences Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is organizing a workshop on Next Generation Ecologists in Global Change Research: Current Status and Future Directions as part of the 98th Ecological Society of America Annual Meeting to be held in Minneapolis, MN August 4-9, 2013. The workshop brings a group of next generation early career ecologists involved in global change research together with established ecologists from around the world to stimulate discussions about the current state and future trends in global change research. This panel will mediate continued future dialogue of research priorities and directions beyond this ESA workshop through discussions on a regular basis via future workshops. This workshop will be held on Sunday, August 4, 2013 from 12:00pm - 5:00pm. The link to the workshop is: http://eco.confex.com/eco/2013/webprogrampreliminary/Session8999.html One needs to register for the workshop while registering for the ESA meeting and there is a $25 fee to register. The participant number is limited to 30.
