Not yet. A provider is offering me a rack CPU (1U) with Atom processor. Is
an interesting option to put the EFW box on the rack, but this server only
comes with Atom processor. So I'm not sure if this processor is capable to
manage the system (for a 150 users LAN).

Or, to help Andres with this question:

Has anybody tried Endian 2.3 as a firewall with IPS for ~150 users on a lower
end processor? (Old P3, Duron/Celeron? Something in the 1.5GHertz range, or
slower.

I suspect that the Endian on an Atom 1.6GHertz can handle the 150 users... The
real question is if using IPS pushes the box to be sluggish for users going
through the firewall.

Re: [Efw-user] EFW - Atom processors

2010-02-12 Thread compdoc
I have several efw 2.2 servers running out in the world, and
you wouldn't want to run 2.2 on a P3, or a Duron.

You can't compare a modern system with those old systems.
Drive and memory bandwidth speeds were pretty horrible back
then.

One customer currently has a 1.5HGz Sempron 2200+ with
512Megs servicing 10 internal users, and three openvpn
connections to servers located in other states, and a couple
of road worriers, so about 18 to 20 users in all.

However, to get it to run in that much ram, I had to turn
off a few services like the content filer, IPS, and spam
filters. I kept the AV scanners.

There's another box that services 45 users, (internal and
remote) has a gig of ram, and a dual core 2.3GHz amd cpu.
The content filter is off on that one too, but because it's
an oncology clinic and words like 'breast cancer' would
prevent access to sites. This runs in a VM on citrix
xenserver.

The atom should be much faster at using ram and with r/w to
the drives. But a power saving, single core, 1.6GHz cpu
handling 150 users? I think it might be slow. A dual core
atom, maybe.

Anyone with 150 user systems? I'd like to hear your specs...

We are currently running 2.3 on a single server servicing 1000 machines, and a
few (4, maybe) OpenVPN users. We are using the content filter features of the
Endian, but not the IPS.

The Server hardware we are using is a SuperMicro 1U server with Dual-Quad-core
Xeons running at 2.0 Gigahertz. 8 Gigs of ram, which is being reported at in
50% used by the web Dashboard. Load is anywhere from 0.5 to 1.0 during the day.
It's been running beautifully.

Re: [Efw-user] EFW - Atom processors

2010-02-12 Thread Andres Gonzalez
Thank you all for your time !!

The server that I'm talking is a SupraMicro (
http://www.supermicro.com/products/system/1U/5015/SYS-5015A-H.cfm?typ=H) but
I think that only comes with Atom single core. I'll take a look if there
is a way to buy it with Dual Atom, but if is not possible I think a Core
2 Duo CPU will work for the configuration that I need.

I have about 15 EFW installations with Pentium D 1.8 Ghz, Pentium 4 2.x Ghz
, Dual Xeon but with no more than 50 users.
The only problem that I had was with a 15 users installation with a Pentium
III CPU, the box was configured with content filter, AV, and openvpn
features, and when there was high traffic to the Internet the CPU usage went
to 100% (disabling CF feature fixed this issue, so change the CPU was the
final solution).

Thanks again.
Regards,
Andres

But I think I'll probably for this installation (~ 150 users)
