Re: [Ekiga-list] Fwd: How do I video chat with Windows users?

2007-07-24 Thread Palo S .

I tried Ekiga on Linux with Ekiga on Windows, video did not work at all, sound
worked usually for several minutes only - suddenly, it began to give you only
loud \knocking\ at both ends... I did not have access to the Windows end
(probably responsible for the problem) so I could not see the -d output from
Windows machine...

It was quite some time ago that I had actually done this, and I did
originally set the two systems up when I was on the same network and had
access to both of them. I'm probably going to be looking at this again
in the next week or so I can post what I find when I attempt it again

[Ekiga-list] Registration and set-up should be more intuitive...

2007-07-24 Thread Roman Antensteiner
While I agree, it's not that difficult to understand - a friend and I
both had exactly the same problems setting things up.

After you go through the installation process, you kind of assume that
you are getting registered, unless you read the small print carefully.
It would be nice if it was really clear that you are giving the
information to connect to an existing account, and not registering a new
one. I know it's there, but it should be shorter and clearer. Most
people don't read those things, and very likely you won't either. You
assume certain things. When I get asked for my full name, then username
and password - I assume I'm getting registered. Because I have never
encountered a log-in so far that asked me for anything besides Username
and Password. I wouldn't even point that out if my friend didn't fall
for the same fallacy a day later. I would suggest a short line like If
you do NOT have an Ekiga Account yet, click HERE to register Above the
fields where you enter your user information.

Secondly, I believe I had to go into the Account settings to adjust the
settings after registration. They weren't set correctly by the druid.
And If someone, like me, never used SIP VOIP services, you cannot
possibly know what a Registrar Is supposed to be. After you have
registered it should say clearly what goes where in the account
settings.

I am usually not nearly as picky with any other program, but since the
purpose of this program is to communicate with people, I want to be able
to tell my friends to install and register, without having to provide
them with the necessary information about SIP services.

Also, a test call should be implemented. I've read on a couple of sites
I've tried the ekiga test call... But I couldn't find the address.
Anyway, it should be in the contacts by default. It's rather tedious to
find out if the audio settings are correct by calling someone.

I know this is a lot of criticism for one post. Please don't take it the
wrong way. I'm very excited that there is a native VOIP client for
gnome, and I had less trouble with it so far then I did with Open Wengo.
But the points I've listed are really mundane, and would make a big
difference in my opinion.

thanks for your time,
Roman A.

My personal thought, no, never. Atleast the way I know/work with it not.
What ekiga is laking is a 'buddy list'. People like that, people want that.
So what you'd want is incorporate the video/voice capabilities of ekiga
in to pidgin. Then you have something that has a chance to compete with
skype. Add a whitelist directory and your good to go.
1 client to do it all, thought video/audio with other clients would have
to be reversed engineerd and shit like that.

Hey a person can dream right.

i think a better idea will be building a jabber voice-chat client or
adding voice-chat facility to gajim. we do not need to spend huge
amounts of time to reverse-engineer YAHOO or MSN protocols for
voice-chat. building on an OpenSource protocol is a much better idea.

i am still not able to get any of my friends switch to Ekiga because
all of them are Windows users and for them (only for them, the Windows
users) it is very much difficult to set up Ekiga, the codecs, the
run-time environment, no buddy list, long start-up times (which
actually is connection time when Ekiga starts up :-)

but i see those users are switching away from YAHOO and Skype to
Google Talk because Google Talk is small in size (just 1.5 MB) and it
does not clutter and it is much easier to set-up + sound quality is
much better. when new client with features like:

1.) better (or i should say good) sound quality
2.) buddy list (i hate YAHOO way)
3.) less cluttered
4.) a simple design, simple UI (like Google Talk)
5.) lot less settings/preferences/features

then it will sweep the market like GNOME/KDE did to the Desktp market.
OpenSource protocols are a much better alternative than time-sucking
reverse engineering task. people do not want YAHOO, Skype or Google
Talk. they want to talk and i think doing simply this one thing will
be much better target. i also think following the UNIX way - do one
thing and do it well - will lead to the resolution of problems. we do
not need to add Webcam features and load of other extra
functionalities and eye candy built into the IM. we can just focus on
1 task -- Voice-Chat client and put our efforts and energy into
that.

BTW, i think Ekiga has one feature that none of the IM have, the audio
codecs for different bandwidth requirements and when everything fails
then Ekiga shines on a much lower bandwidth connection :-)

Strange comment indeed Ekiga (the service) as just an off shoot of Ekiga
(the application), set up so that people have a choice of a free 'dial tone'
provider.

If you considered Ekiga as just one of many SIP providers you could argue that
there are more SIP/H323 users in the world than Skype users. I can probably
call more destinations via SIP than I could via the Skype network.

Will it every be as 'popular' as Skype? Probably not, but then its not
propriatory so it gets my 'vote'.

That's a very big problem, indeed. Every SIP provider gives different
names to these values. Registrar, SIP Server, SIP Service, SIP Machine
(seen so far). If you take other words, then the problem will be the
same, just under another name.

I remember there was a Bugzilla entry about that, I just can't find it.

I don't think it's good do bind one specific provider into a generic

of. They are provided by the SER on ekiga.net. If you use ekiga.net as

You'd need a video conference service somewhere. Ekiga.net doesn't have

some with this feature.

Beside that, I wonder what the standards say about multiple video calls
related to each other - will wait for Damien :-)
