sip.linphone.org has a functional free SIP service (it's a little tricky
to find where you actually sign up).  It ought to work with ekiga - let us
know if it doesn't.

My diamondcard call-out account is registered OK.

My Ekiga account says Processing... and has done for some time.

I tried removing the ekiga.net account, and then adding a new one, and got the
message Globally not acceptable.

Then when I changed my User: name to my name, and left the Authentication user:

[Ekiga-list] Rv: registrar over dnydns?

2013-09-03 Thread el_gallo_azul
I have a Fritz!Box 7390.

I have my landline number set up there, which is under TelephonyTelephone
numbers in the Fritz!Box interface.

I also have two of my other SIP accounts set up there, with dummy telephone
numbers.

The result of all that is that if, for example, you contact my Ekiga SIP
address, my phone rings.

I can also use Ekiga softphone for video calls if I want, which doesn't use any
of these Fritz!Box telephony numbers, but uses my ADSL connection to the
internet.

Importantly, I use the SIP registrar for softphones to make video calls, which
means specifying the SIP server address as the registrar (eg. ekiga.net or
sip.diamondcard.us and the corresponding usernames).

I myself have set up dyndns for my Fritz!Box IP address, but I haven't used it
for a long time since AVM (the Fritz!Box manufacturer) made MyFritz! available
for Android.

in my case the provider is my fritzbox (router) that forwards the
calls to ekiga. As I said - with the ip address it work. The problem is
only that I want to use dyndns.

Let's pick some terms to agree upon.
Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) provides you with an Internet
 connection.

You have selected dyndns to be a domain name provider. It joins your
dyndns domain name to your ISP ip address.

All ekiga wants is a Voice Over IP (VOIP) provider which you use in
ekiga Account registar and Name fields.

When you fire up ekiga, it calls your VOIP provider's server, gives
your id/pw and your VOIP's servers now knows your ip address provided
 by your ISP.

It then sends any calls back to that IP, which happens to be your
 router's Internet WAN address.

As you can see, dyndns was nowhere in the loop. For ekiga software to
receive a call, someone calls your VOIP id, the VOIP server looks up
your id, gets the ip address where your id/pw showed up on, and sends
a udp packet to that IP on port 5060. Your router should forward that
WAN packet to your LAN ip node where the ekiga application would
 accept the incoming call.

In my setup, I have three nodes on my LAN. I have to tell the router
to forward the ekiga/sip ports to the WAN ip address where I have the
ekiga application running in order to originate or receive any calls.

You either hard code the LAN ip address to forward your SIP traffic,
or you have to configure your router to dynamically configure the
required ports to the LAN ip address which opens port 3478 or 3479, if
 possible.

I am pretty sure you will not get dyndns to provide your LAN ip
address unless your router is in a bridge mode where the LAN ip
address is the WAN ip address.
Okay - let me put that straight:
I can use ekiga with the WAN IP of my router as registrar (since it
works obviously perfectly) but I can't use the dyndns which should be
(per definition) nothing else but a mapping between hostname an ip. It
sounds a bit weird to me.
Also I don't use the voip provider directly (which I wanted to make
clear by saying: the registrar is my router).
It is connected to the isp (which in my case is the voip provider) and
forwards calls to it's clients - e.g. ekiga (or the normal telephone).
And since it shall forward the calls not only in LAN but over WAN, I
need to tell ekiga the WAN ip of my router - and here I want to use
dyndns.

So you see: in this loop there is dyndns which doesn't work :(

1. I received notification of your call (in my case, both my landline phone and
my smart mobile phone ring), and answered using the landline.

2. I could not hear anything on the other end.

3. I checked the phone handset and it said 'Talking' which means that as far as
the phone is concerned, the call is still connected.

4. I worked out later that I had two instances of my ekiga.net account
registered at the time you called. One was in the VoIP settings of my modem,
and the other was the CSipSimple app on my smartphone.

5. I Eventually hung up the landline phone, and went and had a look at the
smartphone. The app CSipSimple reported a missed call, and had a record of your
call because it said 'Bret Busby'.

6. I was having a look at the record of the call, to try and work out what had
happened. During this process, I fouled things up. It looks like I selected all
call history, and then deleted them. So unfortunately, I am not able to comment
on the details of the record of your call reported from CSipSimple.

Anyway, if you could advise what, if anything, shows in your event history,
for that attempt, it would be good.

No can do.

7. I would be interested to see if I need to change my SIP configuration or
not, which means receiving a few calls in a row to test my landline phone and
my smartphone.

Hello.

The second link above; the Comparison of VOIP Software is the one to which I
referred in the contact with you, when I could not remember what exactly was
the wikipedia web page.

From that web page, I found that Linphone apparently runs on each of Linux, MS
Windows, and Mac OSX.

I have mentioned that to my brother, so I will find what he does about it and
possibly trying it on his Apple computer (assuming that his computer is running
Mac OSX - I do not know which OS he is running).

I have installed Linphone to try it.

Using Linphone, I have just attempted a phone call to you (Greg). Linphone
shows the call as having been successful, with a duration of about 45 seconds,
but, after the ringing stopped, the line went quiet, and I did not hear any
sound coming from the other end.

So, I assume that Linphone can not communicate with Ekiga.

That is my assumption, but I do not know enough for that assumption to be valid.

According to the web page at
http://wiki.ekiga.org/index.php/Ekiga_Interoperability , communication between
Ekiga and Linphone (v1.5), should work, for video and audio.

The version of Linphone that I installed, is 3.3.2-1, from the packages
repository for Debian Linux 6.0.x .

Anyway, if you could advise what, if anything, shows in your event history, for
that attempt, it would be good.

Hello.

I have contacted one of my brothers, regarding Skype, and he has a Skype
account, but seldom uses it, and instead uses an application named FaceTime,
which is only Apple to Apple (I assume, MacOS), and he said that FaceTime is
better quality than Skype.

On the web page at http://wiki.ekiga.org/index.php/Main_Page , Ekiga does not
show as being able to be installed and run on MacOS.

On the web page at http://wiki.ekiga.org/index.php/Ekiga_Interoperability ,
Ekiga does not show as being compatible with FaceTime for the MacOS.

So, I am wondering whether any prospect exists, of Ekiga being ported to MacOS.

I do not know how many (either absolute number, or, relative (as proportion of
total) WWW (as in the graphical thing that runs on top of the Internet) users,
use Mac OS, or, how the number of Mac OS users, compares to the number of Linux
users, but, as Ekiga apparently runs on Linux and other UNIX and Unix-like
OS's, and, on MS Windows, I am wondering about the prospect of Ekiga being
ported to MacOS.

Thank you in anticipation, for your response.

[Ekiga-list] Is it possible to show/replicate Address Book addresses to more than one computer?

2011-12-24 Thread el_gallo_azul
Hi there

I have been using Skype for a couple of years, reluctantly because it uses a
proprietary protocol, but a number of friends already used it and I didn't mind
supporting a company that got their act together.

Since Microsoft bought Skype, I now consider it necessary to stop using it, so
I spent some time yesterday working out the details for SIP. I use Ubuntu.

I use Ekiga on two computers, and both copies of Ekiga are installed and
registered correctly for both free and paid calls- I registered with Ekiga's
preferred supplier and now have credit with sip.diamondcard.us.

I have installed telnaSIP on my mobile phone (after some trial and error with
some other applications) and it CAN have two different user accounts, as I
need, and it is registered correctly for both free and paid calls.

What I'm not sure about is whether a contact I set up on one account (say, my
desktop computer) is then available on my netbook computer, and even more so,
on my mobile phone. I have tried opening the Address Book on my netbook and
then searching by name for my Auntie Blanche (an Ekiga Call Out number),
without success.

1. How can I make a contact available on more than one computer, without
creating that contact on each computer?

2. Does my ekiga.net account include my contact addresses, such that my
contacts would then be available on telnaSIP?
