Re: [Elecraft] Talking filter Bandwidths
Morning Deni, The bandwidth of a filter (in whatever form) has always been taken to mean the bandwidth between the upper and lower 3db points of the filter's attenuation vs frequency response, the 0db point being at the frequency of least attenuation in the pass band. One hopes that the passband ripple is much much less than 3db !! Other bandwidths are used, but the dbs of attenuation must always be specified. If the attenuation is not specified, then the 3db bandwidth is used. The bandwidth at 6db attenuation is used together with the bandwidth at 60db attenuation to determine the filter's shape factor, a number 1. Very often the bandwidth at 80db of attenuation is used instead of that at 60db attenuation, but the dbs of attenuation must always be specified. There are good reasons for using the 6db figure, but I won't confuse the issue. 73 GeoffGM4ESD (near Cupar, Fife). - Original Message - From: Deni [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Saturday, November 13, 2004 7:45 AM Subject: [Elecraft] Talking filter Bandwidths I have recently replaced my CW Xtal Fiter set and done a realignment using Spectrogram. [Elecraft] It works again :-)
Hi all, Just thought I would let you know I fixed my problem with the 60m and 160m installs. I checked and rechecked everything and all seemed fine which had me scratching my head. In the end, the problem was the seating of the 60m board. I think I had the 8 pin header connected but not the 3 pin. It is a swine to get right and you can't get your fingers in to check but once I reinstalled it all sprung into life, joy :-) Now I could get onto the alignment. I tuned everything but I cannot get the 160m board within the 1v to 7.5v range and the 60m range is very low. These are the readings I am getting. I have ignored those bands where the readings are well within spec. 1800 - 3.1v 2000 - 7.99v 3500 - 2.6v 4000 - 7.49v 5300 - 1.0v 5450 - 1.45v All the other bands are between 2.0v and 4.8v. I shifted the vco to get 60m in spec and I guess this is why 160m is out but why does the 60m band have such low values? I cannot get more than about 6w out on 160m. Any thoughts? Ian, Double check C75 on the RF board - be certain it is 470 pf (471). You may also want to check all the VCO range capacitors (C71 thru C75) while you are at it too - you did change C71 to 120 pf did you not? Nothing in the bandpass filter for 160 meters should have changed due to the addition of the K60XV, so perhaps your 160 meter low power problem was present before the K60XV addition. 73, Don W3FPR - Original Message - Now I could get onto the alignment. Deni In the past, the -6 dB number was usually paired with a -60 dB number to calculate the shape factor of the filter. It would be the -60dB bw divided by the -6 dB bw, to give a shape factor somewhere between 1 (vertical sided passband) and maybe 2 at the worst. Re: [Elecraft] Talking filter Bandwidths
Bob and all, The proper point is the 'halfway' point - half the power is -3 dB (10 log 0.5) but half the voltage is -6 dB (20 log 0.5). The -3dB point would be used when plotting power curves, while the -6db point is correct for voltage or current plots. Typical filters usually assume a power curve (-3 dB) points unless stated otherwise. A plot of an IF filter could be either depending on the measurement techniques. We are moving closer to consistancy with the use of dBm in stating power gain (or loss) within equipment like receivers, but I don't think everyone is on board yet. Yes, the advertizing folks sometimes take advantage of differences like this to make their product look better - called 'specsmanship' in some engineering circles. You have to read the really fine print. 73, Don W3FPR - Original Message - Not sure where the -3dB comes from, maybe advertising? :-) Makes the filter bandwidths look better. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K2 feature request
I have a request for a K2 feature. I have a K2 with KPA100 and KAT100 in separate EC2. Currently, if the KAT100 is installed, the KAT2 just switches to through mode (CALP), fixed to ant1. I recently bought an amp and find that neither the amp, nor a typical antenna, is cleanly 50 ohms and hence there's work for the tuner. If I enable the amp, I need to autotune to the input impedance of the amp, if I leave it offline, I need to tune to the impedance of the antenna. This requires two different tuner settings. I note that the KPA100 has a separate pin to drive the PA key line which means that, through software, the K2 can 'know' whether or not it puts the amp in-line: if the software doesn't key the key line, you're running barefoot. Instead of the current two antenna settings, I believe more choices are possible: A. KPA100/KAT100, ANT1, key PA line This is the normal case and puts the PA in-line. B. KPA100/KAT100, ANT1, don't key PA line This leaves the PA in through mode and makes the thing run barefoot. Note that the K2 needs separate KAT100 settings for A and B as one is obviously driving different things C. KPA100/KAT100, ANT2 I've found that using two antennas sometimes helps, I've ran with a quad and a W3DZZ D. KAT2 ANT2, no KPA100/KAT100 For transverters and the like I note that the various SWR bridges have outputs that can be three-stated, just like currently happens. I really, really want more flexability in my antenna settings. Also note that all four settings would need separate, to-be-memorized tuner settings. Oh, and when you'd hack on the antenna selector code, perhaps the code can be improved: sometimes the KAT2 is stuck in CALP mode after attaching a KPA100 at a previous session. It would be nice if it would switch back to regular AUTO mode if the KPA100 isn't there. What do others think? RE: [Elecraft] PSK31 question
Ha! I fire up PSK31 from time to time, make a contact, then it's back to CW for the next six months! Some modes, like some gear, are fun to tinker with in order to master the techniques of making them work, but that doesn't mean that I'll enjoy using them on the air all that much. As for keeping the audio below ALC threshold in SSB modes, the only issue I can see is when the K2 is able to deliver more than rated power (10 watts for a basic K2). At power levels above the rated maximum the finals may not be as linear as they should, producing more distortion. So if all your K2 can make with the POWER control fully CW is 10 watts (like many of them on the upper end of 10 meters), then it's not a problem. But down on 40 meters the finals can be over-driven. That's why they make more than 10 watts of RF on that band. That's fine for CW in which linearity in the finals is not important, but not good for SSB which requires a linear power amplifier. I've never seen any distortion numbers from Elecraft, but only noted that the manual cautions against operating with the POWER control above that which the K2 could deliver, or trying to run more than 10 watts output in SSB with a QRP K2. Re: [Elecraft] PSK31 question
What I do is to set the power for 5watts in qrpmode and adjust PC to the point where output just drop a little bit. I think this will be almost the same as set power for 10 watts and adjust pcoutput for 5watts. Somehow I have never liked the second method because I like to limit my TX the hard and secure way. Some also advice to set tone for psk31 to a frequency so high that harmonics is outside the passband the ksb2 is capable to send in. If you have basic KSB2 you could set tone to 1200-1300hz. Harmonics will then be attenuated. But I have tried to send 1000hz tone with 5watt setting and pcoutput just at droppoint. Nothing sounds wrong on other rx in schack. No harmonics. 73 de Tom LA1PHA - Original Message - From: Dan Barker [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Elecraft elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Saturday, November 13, 2004 9:52 PM Subject: [Elecraft] PSK31 question Question about transmitter drive setup. Re: [Elecraft] Talking filter Bandwidths
For a lot of us (I have seen this discussed before) the 3 db points are fairly useless as a real predictor of performance. The 6 and 60 db points do a much better job, telling where the skirts start, and where they are diving. I will never forget my disappointment in the Collins 500 kHz CW mechanical filter (3 db) for my MP. I just assumed. Best thing is to get a sweep of the passband. Funny how those are so hard to get for filters unless you're getting them from INRAD's webpage. They have the Collins curves as well. You can compare curves and see yourself. Interesting browsing. You can see from the curves whether the skirts are still going strong and diving past 60 db or whether they're dying and on the way to having a poor ultimate rejection. 73, Guy - Original Message - From: W3FPR - Don Wilhelm [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Bob Tellefsen [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Deni [EMAIL PROTECTED]; elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Saturday, November 13, 2004 1:18 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Talking filter Bandwidths Bob and all, The proper point is the 'halfway' point - half the power is -3 dB (10 log 0.5) but half the voltage is -6 dB (20 log 0.5). ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
