[Elecraft] Which mic

2004-11-27 Thread Michael Bower N4NMR
I'm thinking about asking for a new mic for Christmas. Is there a nice (but
not big $$$) mic that will work on the K2, the 703 and the 817? I'm
assuming that I would need several adapters but that is ok.

I'm leaning towards a Heil type mic. Probably a hand-held or headset. (But
the Heil desk mic deal on Elecraft page is tempting if it will work on all
three rigs.)

XYL says Christmas list is due this weekend or nor presents for me so quick
response is appreciated.

As the gentleman said. Netiquette (Internet etiquette) specifies that
you quote the minimum necessary for your reply to be understood. Not
everyone has unlimited 'Net access for a fixed price. When I'm in YS,
I have to pay the ISP both for the bytes downloaded and the time
connected. Add to that the phone company charges me by the minute. It
gets expensive fast.

Another hint: Make the first line of your signature -- (two dashes
and a space). This is the standard for indicating the start of a
signature and some email clients can handle them differently than the
rest of the message.

Let me suggest that when responding to a specific
email that you take a minute to edit YOUR reply.

Re: [Elecraft] Ear buds fo rthe KX-1

2004-11-27 Thread Paul - VE1DY
Hi Rich...

They were the Sony earbuds 120 dB/mW. I couldn't find the exact one,
so I bought the Sony MDR-EX51LP (100dB/mW). Plenty loud and they are
the most comfortable earbuds ever. Only thing I find, you can hear your
own breathing if signals are weak, and if you take you eyes off the
cord, it will tie itself in a knot!

Remember for comfort (important), they are second to none!

I'm leaning towards a Heil type mic.

Icom radios (with the exception of the new PRO radios) usually have
fairly low mic gain. The use of non-Icom mics often causes problems
similar to what is often experienced with the K2 when using mics like
the Heil HC-5, and Heil has responded by developing a mic element
specifically for Icom radios.

Since both radios have low mic gain, I suspect either the Heil Icom
element or the Heil K2 element would work well with both the 703 and the
K2, though that is just a guess. I don't know about the 817.

Re: [Elecraft] directional antenna

2004-11-27 Thread MC Carpenter
yes I found several small loop antenna all good for 550 to 1600 kHz, but to
get good reception at the very low end is hard, at 150 to 281 kHz. The navy
might think I'm trying to bug their antenna system.

Probably your best bet would be a loop, like those used for enhancing
broadcast band reception. You could probably find info on one for the
broadcast band, and make the appropriate changes by calculating the dimensions
for that lower frequency range. Also, Palomar has a loop system that is pretty
good, but don't know if one of their loops goes down that low.

RE: [Elecraft] directional antenna

2004-11-27 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Plug directional loop antenna into your favorite search engine and stand
back. There are dozens, perhaps hundreds of web sites with design info on
the 'net.

Directional loops covering the 600 meter Marine Band were required equipment
on all ships until just recently. Can't tell you how many trips out I made
on a ship to turn circles and calibrate the loop after work had been done on
the ship - any movement of metal, etc., of any size would distort the
pattern.

What the DF loops were required for was to chase down a lifeboat if someone
was using a 600 meter lifeboat radio after a sinking. The DF loop was used
on occasion to check position where other services such as LORAN weren't
available, although since the 1980's GPS did a much better job all around.

They are gone from almost all vessels today. The 600 meter lifeboat radios
have been replaced by VHF radios and satellite systems that report the
lifeboat's exact position using GPS to all ships involved in a rescue. But
that's a change that's happened only in the past 5 years.

Brian,

Netiquette or not, I prefer to read responses that have the new text on
top - the subject and my memory (I do read most all the posts on this
reflector) are usually sufficient to tell me what I need to know about the
prior information. Scrolling down to find the latest response is a waste of
time IMHO. In a few cases, such as when the original poster asks several
questions, the most expediant thing to do is put the answer to each part in
line with the question - but that is not the normal case. For my part,
please put your response at the beginning. (and yes, do strip out as much of
the extra stuff as is reasonable - the person you are responding to knows

I receive anywhere from 500 to 1000 emails a day. The subject and my
memory are often not sufficient. A *short, trimmed* quote above the new
comments does a very good job of putting things in context.

This is especially true in an active discussion, where there are lots of
replies, and replies to replies, etc. It can quickly become very
confusing to know exactly who and what someone is replying to if they
top post.

Scrolling down to find the latest response is a waste of time IMHO.

Scrolling down (having to search for the right spot), then reading

a bigger waste of time, not to mention being a pain.

[Elecraft] KSB-2 Arrived today

2004-11-27 Thread Jim Sheldon
Got my KSB2 SSB board this morning about 10:30 -- Took about 3 hours all
told to build it, another couple to carefully check it over, do the install,
scrounge up a microphone off an old Tempo VHF-1 2 meter rig that I scrapped
months ago, and wire up an 8 pin plug to it. Everything checked out just
like the book said, and by 7:30 p.m. it was On The Air - First SSB QSO was
Wichita, KS to KC8CPT in Michigan, He gave me excellent audio and a 5-6
signal report. Power was set to 5 watts, the antenna was a B W BWD-90
folded dipole at 25 feet. This rig just gets better and better.

[Elecraft] Elecraft Net Announcement

2004-11-27 Thread Kevin Rock

Good Evening,
The weather has turned clear and cold after Thanksgiving day. The sun
is nice when it pops out from behind the mountain to our south. I hope
you all are recovering from the feast on Thursday and are either relaxing
or contesting to your heart's content. Last night I listened for a number
of hours to all the folks out there. It sounded nice so I copied along
for a bit to see who I could hear. I knew a few of them and could copy
more than I thought I could. But some of those guys are pretty fast!
The bands I listened to last night (160, 80, 40) sounded pretty good.
I know 20 meters was doing well on Friday so hopefully after the contest
is over at 2400z tomorrow they will have left a bit of the ionosphere
intact for us to use. I wandered into Home Depot this evening and
purchased a bit of 14 guage wire. I will try to get a loop up for 160
which should tune quite nicely for the higher bands. Now to get some
ladder line from HRO this coming week and get it hooked up. Then I can
switch around between my various antennas and see if that helps get a few
more check ins during ECN.

Please join us :

Monday z (Sunday 4pm PST) 14050 kHz
Monday 0300z (Sunday 7pm PST) 7045 kHz

Visit our web site: http://ecn.visionseer.com/ for further details. Thank
you for the web space Dan.

No special requirements or exchanges necessary on ECN just check in and
see what happens from there.

Take care all and see you tomorrow evening,
   Kevin. KD5ONS

RE: [Elecraft] loss of side tone

2004-11-27 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Tim, you've probably been bit by the by the sidetone source demon.

Go into the menu, choose Sidetone Level STL.

Press MENU to enable the sidetone level adjustment, the tap DISPLAY.

That changes where the K2 looks for the sidetone from the controller, which
changed a few firmware revs back so it has to be selectable. But if you
accidentally tap DISPLAY while leaving the level menu, you disable the
sidetone in the process! That's the sidetone source demon laughing if you
listen very carefully when you should be hearing the tone... But aren't.

Hope that did it!

[Elecraft] KX1 Wind River Mountains

2004-11-27 Thread John, KI6WX
Last summer, I had several folks track my location as I solo hiked through the
Wind River Mountains on an historical exploration trip. I used a KX1 to send
out my evening GPS location. The historical results of that exploration are
now posted on the web at:
http://home.pacbell.net/johngreb/fremont1842.htm

This trip was able to determine with a high degree of certainty which mountain
John C. Fremont climbed in August 1842. This is a question that has been in
controversy for many years.
