So I instaled on the KAT2 control board an RF Chock (1 mH) and an NE2 neon bulb wired between K18-pin 3/8 and ground just to establish a direct lway to ground for static electricity (via the chock) and in case of a virulent one turn on the NE2 and establish a full short to ground. -- - Hi Robert, It is normal practise to install an RF choke directly across the antenna socket of tube (valve) PA to protect in case of a failure of the coupling capacitors from the tube anode. 2.5kV can be very damaging to your health! Suppose these have ceased to be used since the move to solid state PA's. From memory 2.5mH was the normal value used in the last one I built in the 1960's. The addition of a neon to hold off the path until the neon strikes should not represent any problem though am not entirely sure that it is necessary not knowing the KAT2 circuitry. In professional communication terminal equipment that is connected to external lines the inclusion of gas or carbon arresters is a standard feature at the point where the external line is connected. In addition all of our telecom distibution frames and even the distibution pedestals had arresters built in as standard. The protection operation point was selected to be higher than the normal operating voltages on the line. A QRP K2 is listed as providing 70 to 80V across 50 ohms and the normal striking voltage of a neon is about 110V, so the neon should not strike. There are however some neons on the market that strike at a lower voltage somewhere in the 60V region and to our cost we found these put a S/C across the phone line when ringing voltage and normal telephone battery were present. These would also operate when the K2 was giving normal PA O/P. Probably the choke on it's own would be entirely sufficient to provide the protection needed as long as the component was able to handle the current required. [Elecraft] If It weren't For Bad Luck
I have to tell you folks ever since K2 4595 arrived in mid-December it seems that a black cloud has settled over it. I know likely all the problems are of my own making but the frustration is ever mounting. Received a new C24 for the RF board from Elecraft yesterday and after it was installed the rig came alive on 20 and 30 meters. I went to bed last night a happy camper with the idea of getting up this morning and tweaking the alignment. Got up this morning and powered up the rig. A rapid popping sound was coming out of the speaker regardless of band. Once in a while the rig will go into full receive then shortly thereafter the popping will resume. The S-meter is pegged during the popping sounds. The other strange thing is that the display intermittently switches between frequency, power setting and keyer speed however not necessarily in rapid succession. I have to commend the Elecraft group on their service and willingness to help. You folks here on the reflector have been great too. 73, Ed N0EHQ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] RFC1 and RFC2 on KSB2

That would normally not be a problem, but allthough the manual says to 'try to avoid scrapping the wire', one of my RFC's apparently did not come through unscraped. After mounting and checking for continuity, I had the good sense to check for a short to the crystal can and Bingo! Shorted! I might have made some more room, if the manual had warned that the crystal and the resistor pack should have been soldered as far away from eachother as possible. I'm not sure, as this is my first KSB2. I'd rather not start messing with them now they are already in there. If it's just me, no problem, it's fixed. If it is more common, maybe it would be a good idea to have the manual check for shorts between the RFC and the crystal. I'm not sure how long it would have taken me to find this one if I hadn't done it right away. [Elecraft] Low Frequency Modulation of Side Tone.
I just noticed that on 80 and 17m the side tone in my K2 has a low frequency modulation superimposed over the normal frequency. When I discovered this I was trying to call a Panama station on 80m. I cranked the power up to 100w and started my call. The rig sounded like it was going nuts. It even locked into a repeating string of dits or das. I do not remember which. I turned the rig off to get it to stop. I suspect the repeating transmission is unrelated to the side tone problem because I found that my computer keying cable was part way out of the jack. It must have been bad timing that it came out just as I was calling. The amplitude of the modulation on the side tone increases with power output, and is only noticeable at ~60 to 100 w. On 80m if I key down for several seconds the modulation decreases. It sounds like a capacitor charging. On 17m, the sound is much louder and does not decrease with time. The output signal sounds fine in another receiver. I tested using a dummy load. I also turned off my power supply and computer monitor, and used a battery to power the K2. Neither helped. I built the KPA100 this last spring, and have not noticed this before. However, I have been running mostly QRP so I do not know when this problem showed up. KPA100 is located in an EC2 with the KAT2. The connecting cable is 32 inches long. What should I look for to fix this? Jeff Burns AD9T ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] RFC1 and RFC2 on KSB2
Bart, You must have had the R-Paks tilted in toward the crystals a bit rather than vertical. I just checked 2 KSB2s that I just built and there is enough space to slide a business card thickness easily between either the crystal and the RF Choke or on the R-Pak side. I really can't imagine why you scraped the wire on the smooth crystal body (or on the R-Pak either), but I don't doubt your findings. 73, Don W3FPR - Original Message - Subject: [Elecraft] RFC1 and RFC2 on KSB2 Maybe it's just me, but I found RFC1 and RFC2 on the KSB2 to be very tight fits. There may be a slight change. It is hard to eliminate this entirely. And, when the pitch does not change, the difference between the frequency readout (1.14) and 1.00 is how much lower I need to set C22? I believe this is entirely dependent on the BFO settings for CW and CW R (or USB and LSB). This is one of my tricks for trying to get USB and LSB to sound the same. (and for CW and CW R) I'll use another receiver to listen to a strong AM signal (with an AM detector). Then I'll tune the K2 with LSB until it sounds the same pitch, and switch to USB. If there is a difference in sound, I bump the USB BFO setting one notch either way until it is the same. (This is done after calibrating with Spectrogram or its equivalent) Usually the initial calibration is close, but this helps to get it dead on (well, at least really close). Note that, because of the asymmetrical shape of the SSB filter (and to a lessor extent, the CW filter, depending on how wide it is set), the color of the background noise in USB and LSB will be different, even when the BFOs are dead on. Because of the slight variability in frequency steps in the K2, the frequency response in each sideband can be off by about 20 Hz. I've never understood the obsession with exact frequency readouts with the K2. Even if you get C22 exactly on 4.0 MHz, the K2 calibration may vary a bit. If you are within 200 Hz on all bands, I wouldn't worry about it. Re: [Elecraft] WWV tones and CW reverse?
Bill, 200 Hz calibration error is quite a bit IMHO - but each to his own. Just so folks don't develop a wrong impression, I usually expect less than 50 Hz error with nothing more than a quick check of the 4 MHz reference by comparing the TP3 output using an external counter and the internal CAL FCTR (both measuring the TP3 frequency)- just turn the capacitor until both counter read the same. Then after everything is built, I fine tune using the N6KR method with Spectrogram as my guide to properly hearing the 500 and 600 Hz tones that WWV transmits. I expect less than 20 Hz error after completing that (if your results are not that good, my first question is 'Did you do CAL PLL and also run CAL FIL to write new BFO values?, and were you certain of WWV zero-beat?' 73, Don W3FPR - Original Message - I've never understood the obsession with exact frequency readouts with the K2. RE: [Elecraft] K2: Tilt Bail Installation Question
This had to be one of the most frustrating steps involved in building my K2/100! Even resort to uttering mighty oaths did not appreciably help, although, that did scare the cat out from under the work bench. I finally reported to using a Quickgrip hand vise BUT . . . be VERY CAREFUL if you do that. It is very easy to use too much force and bend the bail to the point where it is too loose and then won't stay up. If you use this method, take it slowly, carefully and with only minimum increments of pressure until the ends of the bail will slip into the feet. I'm not suggesting this is the best way of doing it but after trying various other suggestions, it seemed to work best for me. Good luck. RE: [Elecraft] K2: Tilt Bail Installation Question
I found it rather simple to use the method that has been provided here many times. Partially assembly the stand and the feet, with the stand extended. Use the recommended screws to the front or closest to the notch the stand fits in when extended. Select the longest screws available (they will go in at an angle but will fit) and chinch the stand and feet down. Once firmly in place, One-at-a-time, remove the long screws and replace with the Elecraft recommended screws. This required very little effort. Re: [Elecraft] K2: Tilt Bail Installation Question
I used a piece of plumbers tape wraped around both legs of the bail, cut so there was a gap of several inches between the ends. I then inserted a bolt through holes in each end of the tape and tighted it until the bail was sufficiently compressed to fit in the feet. Leave the screws holding the feet loose. Doug W6JD - Original Message - From: MikeH [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Friday, January 21, 2005 6:11 PM Subject: [Elecraft] K2: Tilt Bail Installation Question Hello All, I'm currently building my K2, and have come to the tilt bail installation part. I must be missing something, because the force required to compress the tilt bail between the two rubber feet seems very excessive. To make the bail fit between to feet will require A LOT of force. Is this normal? Whenever I have to really force something when building, my first thought is that something is not rightalthough I really don't see how anything could be wrong here. [Elecraft] K2/100 #4684
Hi all. I've completed test and alignment part II but have found a few worrisome things. All of the resistance checks except RF board U6, pin 8, to ground are where they are supposed to be. U6, pin 8 measures about 48 Ohms, much less than it should be. When I do the test and alignment I get these numbers. PLL Oscillator Range - 9.81 kHz VCO voltage readings. 3500 2.16 4000 6.00 7000 1.61 7300 3.16 10K 2.64 10.15K 3.13 14K 2.42 15K 4.05 21K 2.1221.45K 3.14 24.8K 4.00 25K 4.38 28K3.3728.8K 4.23 BFO High Freq 4917.13 BFO Low Freq 4912.43 Range 4.70 kHz BFO Alignment goes well and set to the book bandwidth and BFO figures. VFO Linearization passes. I.F. Amplifier Alignment takes between 1.75 and 2 turns down into L34. 40m Band pass Filter Alignment. This is where things get strange. I hear no rise in signal/noise when I connect the antenna and I need to really crank the AF gain up to hear anything through 8 Ohm headphones. L1 and L2 are down almost to the stops in their cans. I can't discern any real peak in signal. Your input would be appreciated as to the cause of the low U6, pin8 reading and the other problems. Thanks for your input. -- R. [Elecraft] 40 Meter Transmitter Alignment, Inconsistent Readings
I am trying the 40 Meter Transmitter Alignment procedure. Adjusting the L1 and L2 for a maximum of 2.0 watts did not seem to be a problem. With the VFO set to 7100 and power setting set for 2.0 watts. The initial indication was about 3.0 watts at 1.5 amps. I adjusted the L1 and L2 until I get a reading of 1.9 watts with the power set for 2.0 watts with 1.26 amps indicated. I changed the power setting to 5.0 watts and it indicates 6.9 watts with 1.8 amps. I increased to 10 watts to get a reading of 12 watts with 2.0 amps. Then I decreased the power setting back to 2.0 watts without changing anything except the power setting and press and hold the TUNE button it reads 2.5 watts. Increasing and decreasing the power setting up then down between 2 to 5 Watts I get 1.9 to 2.6 watts with the setting set for 2.0 watts. The power meter on my dummy load pretty much reflects the same power out as indicated on the internal power meter. Am I making a mountain out of a mole hill here or is something wrong. 73 KI4DGH Chuck Gehring ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] K2: Tilt Bail Installation Question
Hi Folks: At 11:44 AM 1/22/05, Bruce McLaughlin wrote: This had to be one of the most frustrating steps involved in building my K2/100! I guess I should relate the method I used (long ago) to get my tilt bail installed... it still works today, and might make things a bit easy for others... The big problem I think we all seem to have is that the screws are too darn short to allow easy installation... so... USE LONGER ONES... at least until you get things tightened down the first time. Once you have the bail in place and the screws tightened down, start replacing them, one-by-one, with screws of the proper length!!! Even if you have to find a few 'spare' 3/4 4-40 screws, it's worth the small added effort and NOT having to let loose with all the invectives I first found when I was doing my K2... It wasn't until I built my K1 that I realized how easy things became once I used the longer screws at the start. 73, Tom N0SS ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Heath Kit Speaker for the K2
I thought I might pass this along to fellow K2 owners, that I have used an old Heath Kit HS-1661 speaker with my K2 for 4 years now. I have tried a GE Mobile speaker and several other speakers found at hamfests and a couple of TV speakers and still like the HS-1661 the best. The HS-1661 has plenty of volume (leave the volume control at 9 o'clock position) and sounds good. I recently bought another at a hamfest for $15 to mount in a home brew wooden case and save my original for my HW-101. You can usually find them at hamfests for a good price of $15 to $20. Re: [Elecraft] K2 and Hamlib-1.2.3
I have 2.04p and can confirm that I can read the mode, but the filter settings (read and write) don't work. I looked through the Kenwood code that it uses and the KIO2 programmer's reference and I think it might be reasonable to try to #ifdef some of the kenwood code to produce a K2 version but still have the bulk of it maintained as the Kenwood, to keep it up to date with hamlib internal changes. I've made a patch to gMFSK to add a button to QSY so that the currently selected signal is centered at 1000Hz, and wanted to use the filter r/w commands to find the center of the current filter, narrow it successively, etc., but the commands seem not to be implemented. Now on to some microcontroller circuits and assembly language programming! The sun gave us some interesting conditions over the last week so this evening's nets may be pretty good. 40 meters has been troubling lately but if you catch the timing just right it works quite well. I know the fox hunters were commenting about it on QRP-L yesterday and the night before. Sunspot 720 left us with an X7 class flare but only a glancing blow. Otherwise the folks in Ontario would probably be out of power right now. The ionosphere is energized and the MUF is up. 10 meters has been open at times but I am not current on the propagation news. The loop antenna is up in a temporary location. 450 feet of 18 gauge wire fed with ~25 feet of ladder line. It hears well on 160 and 80 meters but I have yet to make a contact with it.
