[Elecraft] Let me build your K2.

2005-05-30 Thread Alan
I have built 90 K2's to date, and many of the other Elecraft kits. Let me
build your radio. My rates are reasonable and you get a built radio ready to
play.

[Elecraft] K2 Aux Digital Mode Connection Box

2005-05-30 Thread Lynn and Les
Hi Lynne,

I know that many ops are running commercial boxes such as the Rigblaster,
the Buxcomm interfaces, Tigertronics, and the MFJ interface. For myself, I
run the orignal Rigmaster with RJ45 connectors (i.e., I originally used it
with an ICOM 706MIIG) on PSK31 and RTTY with my K2. To use the Rigblaster,
set the jumpers to the Kenwood radio configuration. I would buy an M-8
Rigblaster (i.e., for Kenwood) instead of the RJ45 connector variant because
the cabling will be more straight forward.

[Elecraft] Preamp, Attenuator on K2 #4901

2005-05-30 Thread JAMES BRASSELL
Hello, All.

I just finished K2 #4901 and it works great. The only thing I have a question
on is the preamp setting. When the annunciator is on over the preamp, it seems
as though background noise goes down and the signal strength is reduced. In
fact, there seems to be little difference between the preamp and att settings.
I've been through the schematic and carefully reviewed the parts installed for
the preamp and I can't see anything wrong. Has anyone experienced this
problem, if it is one?

73 and thanks.

[Elecraft] kx1 #1056 atu

2005-05-30 Thread RC KC5WA
Okay! I found the problem. I had reversed leads #1 #3 on T1. After
correcting this power out in TUNE shown as P3.0 and the DL1 read 7.06 v
which is where it should be, and SWR = r1.0. I hooked up a 30m
antenna and got an SWR of r4.5. Man you could hear the relay chatter.
I even got a NULL on C9 of 1.5mv on my DDM's 200mv scale

Tnx for the help de rc kc5wa

RE: [Elecraft] Preamp, Attenuator on K2 #4901

2005-05-30 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
Jim,

Other than a faulty solder connection or an incorrect resistor value (R74,
R75, R76, R77), I can think of only 2 things that might cause the PreAmp to
not work - T6 could be connected incorrectly or the windings shorted
together, or C146 may be faulty. Try tacking a 0.01 uF capacitor across R77
(bottom of the board) as a check for an open C146 and if that doesn't fix
things, try rewinding T6.

I've built and added the 30m option and the internal ATU. Everything
works just fine. It's going to be fun using this rig in the park! Now I
just need to find a BNC male to banana female to connect the portable
antenna and radial.

less than the other Elecraft rigs that I've built. It's a sweet little
rig. It does about 3W output with a 12V 1A regulated power supply. I'm
going to get used to it for a bit, after which I'll build and install
the 30m module and the internal ATU. This would be a nice Elecraft
starter rig for someone to build. Great job Elecraft!

Now, if you guys would come out with a rig with a built-in MP3 player,
I'd never put it down! hi

A standard BNC male to SO-239 female adapter works FB. A banana plug is a
perfect fit into the center hole of he SO-239 (large coax) connector and
you're all set for the time when you want to hook the rig to an antenna that
happens to have RG-8 or similar large coax and fittings. Even Radio Shack
carries those.

For the ground, a spade lug under the case thumbscrew right under the
connector - use a star washer or rub a little paint off where the screw
meets the metal for a good electrical contact.

[Elecraft] Binding Post Failure (WAS: KX1 s/n 1005 lives!)

2005-05-30 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Many banana plugs and jacks use nylon insulation which is a *terrible* RF
insulator. Nylon is hygroscopic (absorbs moisture) so its insulating
properties are highly dependent upon the relative humidity.

Running 15 watts into an end-fed wire I literally melted a banana jack that
looks just like those shown at the top of the page here:
http://www.oselectronics.com/ose_p111.htm

In just a few seconds of sending, I smelled hot plastic and saw smoke rising
as the insulation sagged. As it happened, I had a voltage loop (point of
high RF voltage) at the rig on that band and it caused a quick and total
failure. But even at voltages below that which caused failure, part of the
RF was being converted into heat instead of electromagnetic waves.

All of the Pomona hardware that I've seen uses polycarbonate insulation.
This is superior, tough stuff! Pomona makes these adapters for use with test
equipment at very low voltage levels. The popular 1296 that Matt, K7OE
mentioned, is rated to 500 vac max (see data sheet at
http://tinyurl.com/7mca5). They don't publish dielectric info or mention
their losses at RF, but that sounds adequate for RF power levels up to some
tens of watts into a high impedance (1,000-ohm) load. Of course lower
impedances mean lower voltages.

I still use nylon banana plugs and jacks for single wire and open wire
feeder connections, even at QRO power levels, but I never rely on the nylon
for insulation. The jacks are always mounted in an acrylic or polycarbonate
insulating panel with ample spaces between them.
