Hi Paul,

Presume you meant 2450mAhr AA size.

2450Ahr is something quite huge that unless the very latest high capacity
(and expensive) block NiMh cells are used, would entail you using a trailer to
haul them about. We had 3750Ahr 2V lead acid batteries cells in the workplace
com site's solar powered battery plant and they were big!

The 2450mAhr AA version is as you say very usable in digital cameras, but
you do need to keep them charged up as they seem to gradually go flat if left
in
the camera for a long period of time. Another downside is the increase in
capacity had brought on a very definitely noticeable rise in weight.

My 2c worth:

Modern high capacity NiMH batteries (I have about 30 of them, up to 2500mAh AA
size, for camera, CD player, GPS, etc...) seem to have to following
characteristics:
* Fully charged voltage of about 1.35V
* After initial current drain, this drops to about 1.25V and stays there until
about 90% drain.
* They lose about 10% of their charge per week on the shelf.
* They ideally need an intelligent microprocessor controlled charger for
best results.
* The largest capacity AA ones are quite a tight fit into AA holders.

In my experience, rechargeable NiMH AA batteries are better than Alkaline
cells despite their lower initial operating voltage. Alkaline cells drop
their voltage more rapidly in the second half of their discharge cycle and
tend to give lower power overall. I tend to make up a battery with an extra
cell to offset the voltage difference.

Lithium cells have a higher capacity and hold their voltage well throughout
the discharge cycle but are a bit more expensive.

Li-Ion/Li-Polymer rechargeable cells are not, as far as I am aware, available
in AA size commercially (yet) and also have other problems. They need a
special dedicated charger and cell life is limited to 18 months to 2 years
regardless of use due to cell degradation.

battery voltage with the built-in voltmeter and adjust power accordingly.

[Elecraft] KFL1-2 parts question

2005-05-31 Thread John [K7SVV]
Since yesterday was a holiday, I was going to take it easy and build
my KFL1-2 option for my K1 instead of working hard at being retired
but I was missing a part and I have a question about another part.
The PIC chip on my KFL1-4 board has a paper tag stuck to it that
states KFL1-4 and the version # but the tag on the KFL1-2's PIC chip
states K1 I\O which sounds suspiciously like a wrong part. Could any
of you take a peek at your KFL1-2 and let me know what its tag says?

just need to find a BNC male to banana female to connect the portable

I don't have a KFL1-2 for my K1, but the chip in both is called an I/O

There aren't any other K1 I/O chips as there aren't any other K1 I/O

[Elecraft] Mute K2-100

2005-05-31 Thread john
Is there a way to mute the speaker output of the K2... perhaps in some of

lost speaker output (though headphone output is just fine).

I took the side panel off and the speaker ohms out correctly at the
connector end.

Is there a way to mute it that I might have enabled?

You can become accoustomed to either but I prefer the narrow range.
The knob is much more sensitive on the wide range.

RE: [Elecraft] K1-4, Which VFO range selection, 80 kHz or 150 kHz

2005-05-31 Thread EricJ
I tried 150 khz at first. The tuning is WAY too fast and the added
frequencies are of no use to QRP for the most part. I changed to 80 khz and
the tuning is slower while providing coverage of the most active CW portions
of each band. I also built for 10.1 mhz as most of the useful QRP activity
seems to be 10.100-10.120.

Eric wrote:

I've been using K1 #175 in the USA since November 2000, and I find the
advantages of the 150 kHz span to be overwhelming, but **only** for use in this
ITU region.

IMHO, the 150 kHz span (actually it's about 170 kHz) has a very controllable
and acceptable tuning rate (after FP-R19 was added to the design in 2001 to
linearize the tuning rate at about 17 kHz per turn). I also use a little felt
padding placed between the VFO knob and the front panel to give a slight amount
of rotational resistance. No matter which span is used, the VFO potentiometer
shaft needs this extra resistance, IMHO.

and the added frequencies are of no use to QRP...

No use???

Certainly there is some use in this ITU region, where 7100 to 7150 kHz is
excellent QRP territory and the main justification by far for choosing the wide
span. Cross-mode (Morse-LSB) contacts in the phone band from 7150 to 7170 MHz
are possible, since the K1 receiver operates in LSB mode (on all bands). When
15m is hot and one or more of the 6,666,666 different contests is wasting good
RF energy, 21100 to 21170 kHz provides a haven for Morse QSOs.

I also built for 10.1 mhz as most of the useful QRP activity
seems to be 10.100-10.120.

With the 170 kHz span and the 1 kHz band edge crystal installed, time and
propagation info are often available from WWV at 10 MHz in the USA. A useful
capbility.

HOWEVER, if I lived in another ITU region where Morse operation from 7100 to
7150 kHz was not allowed, and where WWV could not normally be copied, I'd
choose with the 80 kHz span. That is probably the best setup for your European
K1.

Mike / KK5F
