[Elecraft] Indianapolis Hamfest

2005-07-11 Thread Eberhart, Russell
Elecraft was represented at the Indianapolis Hamfest on Saturday by Rich
Meiss (WB9LPU), Wayne Reed (K9NE), and me. We had a great location just
inside the front door of the AIR-CONDITIONED building. (It hit 90
degrees Saturday.) Lots of people came by the booth. We gave out all
of the literature that Lisa Jones sent from Elecraft, and one of the
extra copies I made just in case. On display were two KX1's, a K1, a
K2, a T1, and a few of the smaller kits. Rich brought part of his
collection of old keys, as well as several of his famous paddles
(including his coffee cup paddle). I had my restored HW-8 and my
'el-cheapo piano paddle.' From 7am until we closed, we almost always
had one or more people at the table talking with us. I opened up my KX1
so many times I am considering velcro fasteners for the chassis (hi).

I got one a long time ago. It was somewhat small and I was surprised
that mine was slightly off-center, causing an annoying wobble. I ended
up putting the rubber ring from the ft100 knob on my standard Elecraft
knob. It's the right size, heavier, and doesn't wobble. Although it
does not have a spinner, I find that I can spin it by placing my finger
on the raised rim of the Elecraft knob. One could also use a finger
dimple as sold by Elecraft.

Just a hint. You can use many other knobs as well.
Here I use the knob off my old Kenwood TS-180 and it is really great

Folks,

The FT-900 rubber ring also fits over the stock K2 knob. The ring was
available a couple months ago even though the knob was out of stock. A bit
wider than the FT-100 ring and priced less too (less than a buck compared to
over $5 for the FT-100 ring).
Of course there are those who still advocate the broccoli ring solution G

[Elecraft] Re: knob

2005-07-11 Thread Steven Pituch

Hi all,
I don't know why people go to all the trouble to change the knob on the
K2. I have been using mine for 6 years and I love it just the way it
was designed. I put my index finger on the edge of the knob and just
swirl away. I even have no desire to get the little finger dimple.
The knob is nice and heavy, and the drag can be adjusted by how close it
is to the felt washer.

I must be different or something.

[Elecraft] Help with KAT2

2005-07-11 Thread tom.w3qs
Hello Group,

I need some help on setting up the spacers between the two boards on the
KAT2. I'm pretty sure the assembly instructions are incorrect, so instead
of asking for clarification on them, perhaps someone can simply tell me:

Where do the split lock washers go?

ALSO: The male and female connectors (P and J, 4 5) don't appear to
completely mate. Is that correct?

Thanks and 73,

RE: [Elecraft] Help with KAT2

2005-07-11 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
Tom,

Yes there will be part of the pin surfaces showing when the connectors are
properly mated - it is supposed to be that way.

Now for the screws, lockwashers and standoffs. When you put the standoff on
the first board, use a lockwasher under the screwhead and one between the
board and the standoff - the one between the board and the standoff is the
most important.

Then after you mate the boards, put a lockwasher under the screwhead only.
It would be a real bear of a job to keep the washer between the board and
the standoff at that point, so don't do it that way, but do put a lockwasher
on the screw to keep the screw from backing out.

Don W3FPR

I thought they were sharp at first too. I tune either with my left thumb
or with my right forefinger. I pitched a baseball so much as a teenager
my forefinger is curved. Helped me throw a wicked slider in my day but
now it is just bent. This has helped my K2's tuning knob gain a patina
and lose its sharp edges. I've thought of the broccoli bands but never
quite gotten around to it. I eat enough of my cruciform veggies but have
grown to like my K2 the way it is ;)

since I don't normally tune with a finger, they just get in the way for

[Elecraft] FS - Yaesu FT-900AT

2005-07-11 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
I need to sell my Yaesu FT-900AT (serial # 4J060136 purchased in 1994). It
is in excellent condition and it has the 500 Hz CW filter and TCXO
installed, it has the auto-tuner built in, and comes with the matching MH-31
hand mic and a never used separation cable - the front panel removes for
mobile mounting if one has the need to do that - manual is included. No
mods. It has not been on the air very much since I built my first K2 in
1999.

Partial specs: Receiver 100kHz to 30 MHz, +/- 2PPM stability, sensitivity
0.25uV for HF bands, SSB, CW, AM and FM. Transmitter power adjustable up to
100 watts. A 20 Amp 13.8 volt power supply will handle it at full output
power easily (not included).

This transceiver has served me well. I have replaced it with another recent
purchase.

Asking $650 shipped to your door anywhere in the continental US.

Off-reflector responses only please (please delete the reflector name from
the subject line).

[Elecraft] KX1 #1204 has a pulse

2005-07-11 Thread J. Coote
I'm partway through constructing and testing KX-1 #1204.
Today, I tested the keyer, relays and receiver.
I noticed that while using a (questionable) IFR-1200 service monitor to peak
the receiver, 7 mhz seemed less sensitive than 14 mhz... has anyone ever had
that happen?
It's not a big difference, but has me wondering.
Is there a test-equipment friendly receiver sensitivity spec for the KX-1?

[Elecraft] K1 # 2034 4-Band Receiver Alignment Problem

2005-07-11 Thread George Kimbriel
I hope someone can help me.

I have been trying for some time to perform the alignment and test, Part 1
(Page 36-39) for the receiver.

The difficulty seems to be U1 and U2. I have determined the voltages with and
without T1 and T2 installed, they are as follows:

With T1 and T2 installed the voltages are:

U1U2

Pin 10.550
Pin 20.550
Pin 300
Pin 46.086.08
Pin 56.086.08
Pin 66.036.03
Pin 75.385.38
Pin 86.086.08

With T1 and T2 Removed the voltages are

U1U2

Pin 10.550
Pin 20.550
Pin 300
Pin 46.086.08
Pin 56.086.08
Pin 66.036.03
Pin 75.385.38
Pin 86.086.08

I have checked the toriods 3 times. Verified the PCB traces. Also, when I
touch pin 4 of U2 I received a very strong AM station in the area.

Thanks for any assistance.
