Re: [Elecraft] Hi current/low power out on 20 meters w KPA100

2005-10-11 Thread Ted Turk

Gregg,

The problem appears to have been a batch of 1.6 ohm metal film
resistors (R19,20) that had 6 turns and produced a weak 10MHz or
thereabouts trap with C80,81 (4700pF). I believe Elecraft have sourced
some resistors with lower inductance. For the Brits, locally obtained
Vishay resistors (Farnell Part No; 550-012) worked. I could only get
1.5 ohm in 2W power rating but they had 1.25 turns and therefore only
1/23rd of the calculated inductance. After fitting I reset the drive
bias. The problem was initially identified by changing C80,81 and a
temporary cure effected by increasing the values to 5600pF or, in some
cases, 6800pF.

Scott at parts has the best American solution.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 opinions sought

2005-10-11 Thread Robert Tellefsen
Hello Mike
Interesting idea for your big panel controls.
My suggestions are separate selection and indicators for FIL1 through FIL4
and AF1 through AF4, R2 ON/OFF with indicator, a RIT control with zero
center
detent, TEST/CW/USB/LSB on separate buttons, ANT1/ANT2 a separate button
from the TUNE function, SPLIT with an ON/OFF indicator.

Some of these, where there are only two states, such as R2 ON/OFF or
ANT1/ANT2,
could be a single button with two indicators side by side.

I hope you get lots of ideas from the group. Good luck.

Subject: [Elecraft] K2 opinions sought

Hi,

I'm in the process of designing an interface for my K2 that would bring
functions, currently enabled or changed by tapping keys or holding keys, to
independent controls. I am also going to bring some functions, that are
enabled by navigating through the menu system, to single button/switch
functions. I am doing all of this to bring a big radio feel to my small and
capable K2.

I would like to find out which functions you would like to see implemented
with a single control. As an example, instead of tapping the mode button to
select USB, LSB, or CW, I will just turn the rotary switch to the desired
mode.

Thanks for your input.

What is SOC ?

73 de Gordon G3ZFZ (fists nr 2866)

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

FISTS is an international society for the preservation of Morse code
(which, if there were any justice in the world, would be called the Vail
code). Members tend to congregate 50 to 55 KHz above the bottom of the
band. You can join (can't remember the price), and you get a number
which you can exchange with other members for various forms of fame (no
fortune, unfortunately). My number is 11151. FISTS members will
usually match your speed so it's a fairly good way to get in some CW
practice if you need it.

 Is this a joke?

No. SOC is the joke. My SOC number is 633, although it doesn't seem to
matter much except in the SOC marathon, where it also doesn't seem to
matter. SOC does not do fame or fortune.

Any more questions?

[Elecraft] KPA100 KAT100 integration - Question answered!

2005-10-11 Thread bobconvers
DOH! - It all seems so obvious now - for one thing, I could not use my
existing control cable (without the KIO2) because the barefoot K2 has
no place to plug it in!

I now understand that:

(1) the KIO2 includes a new DB9 connector for the barefoot K2 rear
panel, and

(2) that one of the functions of the KIO2 (in addition to level
shifting, etc, for computer control) is provide an internal
interconnnection for the AUXBUS and other control signals from Control
Board ribbon cable connector of the barefoot K2 to the new DB9
connector, from which the signals can be conveyed (via control cable)
to the KPA100/KAT100 in the new box.

Many thanks to those who replied to my question.

[Elecraft] New CP1 Directional Coupler and BL2 250W 1:1/4:1 switchable Balun

2005-10-11 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft

We've just added two new Mini-modules to our Mini-module family
--

BL2 Wideband 1:1 4:1 (Switchable) 250W Balun

Our highly-efficient BL2 balun can handle up to 250 watts and can handles 1:1
and 4:1 ratios via an on board switch. It is very small (just 1.5 x 3) and
lightweight, making it an excellent choice for both home and field use. It uses
a special winding technique to reduce losses and extend the useful range,
resulting in an SWR of less than 1.2:1 from 500 kHz to 55 MHz (200-ohm load). It
includes rugged screw terminals for the balanced output as well as ground, and
can be used in a variety of matching applications.

Price: $34.95

Specifications:

Power Rating: 250 watts maximum.Bandwidth: Input VSWR less than 1.2 when
connected to a 200 resistive load, 500 kHz to 55 MHz.

--

CP1 Directional Coupler

The CP1 is a dual directional coupler that provides high directivity, can be
internally or externally terminated and can be constructed with a coupling loss
of either 20 dB or 30 dB. It can be used to sample a transmitter's forward power
and reflected power output. As an example the forward power port can be
connected to an oscilloscope for display of the transmit envelope. It is an
ideal companion to the 2T-Gen 2 Tone test generator. For more advanced
applications is can be used with a spectrum analyzer and tracking generator to
sweep the return loss (SWR) of an antenna or other device in real time over a
frequency range.

Price: $39.00

Specifications:

Frequency Range: 1 MHz to 30 MHz
Coupling Loss: 20 dB or 30 dB (29.8) +/- 0.25 dB
Directivity: 30 dB
Power Rating: 30 dB coupler, 250 W; 20 dB coupler, 25 W

If the balun is inefficient, the loss will be the same in DB at QRP or
QRO. If the balun has a loss of, say 3 DB, then it will make your KW
sound like 500 watts and your 5 watts sound like 2.5.

Having said that, power loss is power converted to heat, so you might
not notice a lossy balun when operating QRP; at QRO it would heat and
possibly burn up.

Finally, a balun may be more or less effective at reducing common mode
currents (that is, converting between balanced/unbalanced), apart from
losses. And one balun may have a wider frequency range in which it is
efficient and effective than another.

So there is definitely a sense in which one balun is better than
another, even for QRP.

Re: [Elecraft] balun

2005-10-11 Thread Charles Greene

Mike,

The reason is that for small 4:1 baluns, you need more turns of wire
on them to get the necessary inductance, more turns means a smaller
wire to fit, and a smaller wire means the impedance of the two wire
transmission line is not optimum for a 4:1 balun. You will have a
high SWR just due to the balun. However, I have made many small 1:1
baluns using several turns of RG-174 on a toroidal core, by placing
ferrite beads (12 FB43-801 beads work nicely) on the outside of a
piece of RG-174, or just winding a bifilar pair of #22 enamel
insulated magnetic wire on a toroidal core. You need a F114-43 or a
F140-43 core to get enough impedance for 80 meters, although a
smaller core will work for 40 up. Palomar sells a BA-58 bead kit for
RG-58. Actually, a 1:1 balun works as well on a random length
transmission line as a 4:1 balun. Unless the load is a predictable
200 ohms or there about like you get on an OCF antenna, the impedance
of an open wire feed line is just as likely to be near than 50 ohms
as it is near 200 ohms. You also can use a Low Power balun for 100
watts like the Elecraft balun kit, or the one on the NJQRP web site.

DXE baluns are for high power, are large and heavy, and cost a lot of money.

[Elecraft] New VCO Mod Kit

2005-10-11 Thread Roy Morris
I have installed the VCO mod kit, and it works fine. I can now put my linear
power supply next to the K2 without AC getting into the transmitted signal. I
highly recommend this mod. BTW, this mod doesn't affect the passband or
frequency, therefore no CAL FIL or CAL PLL is necessary. Nice mod, Wayne.

[Elecraft] SOC and OLD F.A.R.T.S.

The SOC sounds a lot like my anti-club club, the OLD

Re: [Elecraft] Poor Man's Spectrum Analyzer

2005-10-11 Thread Matt Osborn
No trouble at all. I ordered the kit from Bruce Barlowe at The Science
Workshop.

http://www.science-workshop.com/

It's definitely not an Elecraft kit, you'll have to pick buy your own
enclosure, power transformers, switches and front panel controls.

The schematics are all hand drawn with no component values marked, but
the parts list is complete. The assembly instructions are sparse,
(install 16 resisters, install 14 capacitors, install 4 diodes, etc)
but it will get the unit assembled. There is very little 'theory of
operation' of the actual circuits, but the optional book offers lots
of information on using the analyzer.
