Hi Chas,

It is called an SMA. There are adaptors widely available that have the

the

Hi:
Everything went together flush, square and true, if I do say so myself.
I should have mentioned that I can get the standoff just barely threaded
into the retaining nut, by a quarter turn or less. Not really enough to
ensure that it stays fastened. It's the thickness of the plastic flange
that is the main culprit.
Do you know the manufacturer and part no of that connector? I would
like to have a look at a drawing of it.

Might want to rethink just one pin of that. A connection from the
computer to pin 1 of the KIO2/KPA100's DE9 will probably create a
ground loop. Only connections to pins 2, 3 and 5 are needed.

Pin 1 is the ground for the non-RS232 stuff (Auxbus, etc.).

RE: Re: [Elecraft] MicroHam microkeyer

2005-10-25 Thread Don Wilhelm
Chris,

Yes, that is true - the SHELL on the DE9 connector is commonly listed as
protective (or frame) ground. Many interfaces do not implement or use the
Carrier Detect signal, but one never knows for certain unless you have
detailed info on the interface used.

That is also why the special computer to K2 cable does not attach pin 1 at
the computer end. At the K2 end, pin 1 IS used as a ground to the K2
chassis, and it is important for ground loops prevention and reducing the
coupling of extraneous signals into the K2 that this shield be carried to
the computer end (but not terminated there).

The K2 9 pin connector, like many others, is NOT an RS232 serial port, and I
do not believe any claims otherwise have been made. It is just a connector
that happens to have 2 RS232 signals (3 with signal ground) included in its
set of signals. There is no standard for the connector itself, it is used
in a variety of applications. So unless a connector is designated as a
serial port, make no assumptions that it really is - the K2 connector is
labeled on th erear panel as AUX I/O, and that is truly what it is - a
connector with auxiliary inputs and outputs, and must be interpreted in the
most generalized context of that labeling.

[Elecraft] T1 tuner issue

2005-10-25 Thread Kurt Loken
Hello All,

I just got my SW-20+ working, and I ran into an
antenna question. Currently, I don't have a 20 meter
antenna, so I thought I would try to use my 40 meter
dipole with it and just use my Elecraft T1 to tune it
to 20m.

It it didn't work too well...I got an SWR around 2.5.
Is this to be expected, or could there be an issue
with the T1? The T1 sure sounds like it is working
hard to get to the 2.5 (relays are busy). My antenna
ignorance is probably showing, but since 20 is a
direct multiple of 40, I thought the T1 wouldn't have
a problem matching.

So I guess my question is: Is something wrong with my
T1, or do I just need to put up a 20meter antenna?

RE: [Elecraft] T1 tuner issue

2005-10-25 Thread Don Wilhelm
Kurt,

It all depends on the feedline length (in electrical wavelengths). If your
feedline is anywhere near a multiple of a half wavelength at 20 meters, that
behavior is not unusual. The T1 tuner (and most similar tuners) do not work
well if the impedance presented at the shack end of the feedline is quite
high. If you add or subtract a bit of feedline length (1/8 wavelength at a
time is my suggestion), you will likely see better results.

I will go into all the reasons why should you ask, but try changing the
feedline length and see if it improves things.

[Elecraft] T1 tuner issue: try shorting the feedline, working against ground

2005-10-25 Thread wayne burdick

Kurt,

The impedance of your 40 m dipole on 20 m is probably sky-high; 2.5:1
may be the best you can hope for. This probably won't hurt the rig, and
the power loss due to the high SWR is probably less than a dB assuming
the rig doesn't roll back power (or clip the voltage at the collector
of its PA).

Another thing you can try is to short the coax center connector to its
shield. This is an old trick for extending the matching range of an
antenna. Connect this to the T1's hot lead, then connect the T1's
ground to a ground counterpoise. The impedance will likely be very
different, giving the ATU a chance to match it. It will be slightly
noisier than a dipole, and the directivity will change, but you may not
mind.

RE: [Elecraft] T1 tuner issue: try shorting the feedline, working against ground

2005-10-25 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
A variation on the idea proposed by Wayne is to add an inductor or capacitor
in series with the center wire in the feeder. That will change the impedance
presented to the tuner. You may need to experiment a bit to find a value
that the ATU can match - as indicated by a low SWR - but you won't have to
fiddle with a separate ground system. You whatever you have handy - a 20 to
50 pf cap or a dozen turns of hook-up wire around a 35 mm plastic film
container. You aren't looking for any exact value, just enough reactance to
move the impedance into a range the T1 can match.
