[Elecraft] RE: K2 RF Speech Processor?

2006-09-09 Thread DOUGLAS ZWIEBEL

I was surprised that RF clipping or compression for ssb was not
mentioned as a requirement for the K3 (or K 0.5 or K4).

The German unit looks great (tiny). Decades ago, before I forgot the
phone I used a board produced by DATONG (UK). Back then (late 70's
early 80's??) it was small but would be considered huge today. But
it worked extremely well and, as the German unit appears to do, it
converted audio frequencies to RF, clipped, then converted back to
audio freq. You just stuck it between your mic and the mic input of
the radio. It had two adjustments...clipping level and output. I ran
mine off of a 9V battery, which lasted at least the entire 48 hours of
a contest.

The DX and Contest crowd (those who remember the phone) would love
something like this on the next K2 or as an add-on option. They
really do work!

Great idea! Although I have not used DF4ZS's speech processor, I have used
various forms of this type of audio processor and RF clippers over the years
and have found that they are useful, perhaps more so than low cost (not
studio) audio compression devices. Personally if I intended to buy one of
his processors I would go for the larger external unit, because reasonably
good SSB filters should be used before and after the RF clipping circuits,
all followed by an audio low pass filter at the output with a cutoff around
3kHz, all of which I believe he has included in the larger unit. This could
of course be done with a smaller unit which included these items, but is
there enough space inside the K2 to fit it in? Also the processor should be
shielded to avoid the risk of RF feedback, and prevent the processor's LO
signal from getting out.

When used with a K2, I suspect that the K2's audio compressor should be set
for a small degree of compression, if any, and most / all of the audio
processing done by the RF clipper - just an unproven hunch.

Hi Geoff, I would suggest if your making a mini-module let it be a
speech compression device, not a clipper. Compression increases average
power used and sounds louder. If set too high it sounds odd and can
create clipping that generates unwanted sidebands.

On my radio I run compression all the time. It works in conjunction
with the Automatic Linearity Control the radio has. If you don't have
ALC it is harder to set the Compression.

Hi Karl. A moot point!! I'll have to get back to you later today as I

With my K2/100 I use the audio compressor and a 'flicker' of ALC, but
RF clipping and again a 'flicker' of ALC in the homebrew rig. One has
to be very careful not to use too much ALC - other problems can arise.

In the AM days, many hams incorporated simple diode audio clippers in
their modulators to clip the negative-going peaks of the audio signal,
followed by lowpass filters to clean up the high-frequency distortion
products produced by clipping. This permitted a higher level of
modulation in the positive direction without splatter, thus increasing
the average power in the signal. Some amount of compression was often
used as well in order to increase the average modulation percentage.
Processed AM signals sounded much louder without significant widening
if the processing was done properly.

When SSB came along, it was found that audio peak clipping did not have
the desired result, because the height of the peaks in the RF envelope
did not correspond directly to the audio envelope. So RF clipping came
into use in which the clipping and filtering takes place after the
generation of the SSB (or at least DSB) signal. AS Geoff points out, if
you want to do this in the audio chain, you need to generate an RF
signal, clip and filter it, and then convert it back to audio.

The mod is very easy: You change RP5 to a 150k and connect Pin 2 and Pin

You find the mode in 'QRP-Report' 3/2004 (only in german). For interest,

[Elecraft] Smooth Voice Controller? was K2 RF Speech Processor?

And along the same lines, what about a better VOX?

The Smooth Voice Controller from April 1992 QST used a bucket brigade audio
delay system to prevent any audio from being chopped off by the VOX. A QSK
system for voice.

Probably lots of better technology exists now than 14 years ago when that
article was written by John Cowan, W4ZPS.

Would also make a good Mini-Module Kit.

[Elecraft] ECN - Info on 20m jammer

2006-09-09 Thread Albers
If this has been posted before, forgive me for the bandwidth.

The following is excerpted from the ARRL letter:

As the so-called Firedragon jammer continues to transmit in one or more
Amateur Radio bands, the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) and three
of its Region 3 member-societies so far have appealed to the jammer's target
to move elsewhere. The Firedragon's all-music transmissions from the
People's Republic of China (PRC) appear aimed at blocking the much-weaker
broadcasts of the clandestine Sound of Hope (SOH), located outside the
PRC.[ .] the SOH said its supporters use various avenues including Amateur
Radio
frequencies to get their message into the PRC.

Through our investigation, we learned that the transmissions of SOH
programs through Amateur Radio frequencies come from areas around China, and
they each only target a local area of China with very low power, only for
the intended audience and would interfere with nobody else, said SOH's Yue
Chen.
snip
Wireless Institute of Australia (WIA) Director Glenn Dunstan, VK4DU, told
the Sound of Hope via e-mail this week that if it wants the support of the
international community, it should move its transmissions into legitimate
broadcasting spectrum.
snip
Bihlmayer said September 6 that the Firedragon was back on 14.050 MHz -- a
part of the 20-meter band allocated to the Amateur Radio Service on an
exclusive basis worldwide -- after spending two days on 14.400 MHz. Over the
past several months, the jammer also has been heard on 10.135 MHz, 14.260
MHz, 18.080 MHz and 18.160 MHz.

The music jammer takes apparent monitoring breaks on the hour. When the
jammer's carrier is off, Bihlmayer, who lives in Southern Germany, says he's
heard a weak carrier on 14.050 MHz broadcasting a Chinese program that
included speech.

Note the use of 14050, and the breaks on the hour - just in time for Kevin to
get the net started!

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement -- change of venue

2006-09-09 Thread Kevin Rock

Good Evening Folks,
Once again my nephew has worked me in to the ground. I am very relaxed
:) The woodshed holds enough seasoned wood to get me through the end of
the heating season. We are not going to stop cutting but will put the
remainder under wraps outside. He'll get a decent amount home to
Vancouver too. They like to have a fire now and then to heat their house.
I've been warned of a recommencement of the folks playing music on
14050 kHz. If you hear music when you tune in look either 10 kHz up or
down. I'll try to run off the edge of the jammer enough to allow weak
signals to get through. Which brings up another point: I'll be running
both nets from Shute Park in Hillsboro, Oregon. I'll not be at home on
the ridge at 2000 feet with a doublet up at 65' but rather down in the
valley with city RF noise and a doublet mounted as an inverted V.
I was able to find a good deal on some Trojan T-105s so I will be
running from batteries again. Both at the park and as a regular
occurrence. Up until my deep cycle battery decided it was time to move on
to battery heaven I've been running nets on emergency power. Occasionally
I lose AC power for minutes to hours at a time. Battery power helps me
through those times. I've grown used to being able to run CW while the
house is off the grid. I am going to buy a few more before the next price
jump and charge them via solar panels. Hopefully I can get more of my
house of the grid in the future (like the well!!!)
Since we will be under surveillance during ECN I may be distracted by
folks asking questions while I have my normally puzzled expression firmly
planted on my face. Be patient, I will get to you. Hopefully I will
plant a few seeds and at least show them how CW works across the county
with minimal gear. I think I'll take a few other CW rigs along and show
them a variety of paddles too. I am going to have my headphones on
through a Y-cable with the other section running a computer speaker. I've
rigged the speaker to run through an Anderson Power Pole connection to my
battery. If there is AC power available, however, I'll have a backup
Astron power supply so I don't have to lug the batteries a hundred yards
to the operation position. I am laying out contingency plans tonight.
These are ARES folks so I'd better be prepared ;)

   Please join us:
Sunday 2300z (Sunday 4pm PDT) 14050 kHz as per the jammer's tastes.
Monday 0200z (Sunday 7pm PDT) 7045 kHz

Until tomorrow,
Kevin. KD5ONS

[Elecraft] Lightning damage result/repair

2006-09-09 Thread Ron Willcocks

Hi
Yesterday a thunderstorm ran through here, and while I didn't think it
was anywhere too close, the SWR bridge diodes in the KPA100 thought otherwise.
A few hours after the storm, I fired the K2/100 up and it was receiving
fine, but my troubles started when I tried to tune up. I don't recall all
the events, but I do know I was quite surprised when the K2 started to tune
and suddenly all the lights went out. A quick check of the fuse in the
power cord showed the 20amp fuse had blown. Replacing the fuse bought the
set to life again, but when I tried to transmit, the display showed unusual
readings and it was obvious there was no power going up the spout.
Immediate panic set in as I visualized sending to Elecraft for a pair of
new finals. However, after taking the shield off the PA and poking around
with the DMM, I quickly found the FWD diode in the SWR circuit open circuit
and the REV diode gave a reading of 2.2ohms both ways round.
The final out come resulted in a repair that cost me two 98c diodes and a
couple of hours work, as Elecraft cunningly put the SWR bridge diodes in
probably the most awkward place they could think of in the KPA100.
Everything works fine again now, but I have to wonder what else may have
been damaged and just waiting for the likes of Field Day to stop working?
Another mystery to me is why didn't the diodes in the bridge circuit of the
KAT100 go as well?? And what made the 20 amp fuse blow? (perhaps the power
being ramped up too high as the diodes were in their death throws?)

Cheers...Ron ZL1TW

Thank you Ray.
I've included a note to move up or down for tomorrow's 20 meter net if
anyone hears the music. Hopefully my 'hearing' will not be impaired too
much by working from a city with a less than optimal antenna. If all goes
well I'll pull your KX1 out from the noise floor. But, your KX1 has done
phenomenally well thus far; Wayne must have put a little something extra
into that one ;) However, a good antenna and a bit of hardline has won a

I do hope tomorrow's nets go well for many reasons. We can have our

As the so-called Firedragon jammer continues to transmit in one or more
Amateur Radio bands, the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) and
three
of its Region 3 member-societies so far have appealed to the jammer's
target

to move elsewhere. The Firedragon's all-music transmissions from the
People's Republic of China (PRC) appear aimed at blocking the much-weaker
broadcasts of the clandestine Sound of Hope (SOH), located outside the
PRC.[ .] the SOH said its supporters use various avenues including
Amateur Radio

frequencies to get their message into the PRC.

Through our investigation, we learned that the transmissions of SOH
programs through Amateur Radio frequencies come from areas around China,
and

they each only target a local area of China with very low power, only for
the intended audience and would interfere with nobody else, said SOH's
Yue

Chen.

Wireless Institute of Australia (WIA) Director Glenn Dunstan, VK4DU, told
the Sound of Hope via e-mail this week that if it wants the support of
the

international community, it should move its transmissions into legitimate
broadcasting spectrum.

Bihlmayer said September 6 that the Firedragon was back on 14.050 MHz --
a

part of the 20-meter band allocated to the Amateur Radio Service on an
exclusive basis worldwide -- after spending two days on 14.400 MHz. Over
the

past several months, the jammer also has been heard on 10.135 MHz, 14.260
MHz, 18.080 MHz and 18.160 MHz.

The music jammer takes apparent monitoring breaks on the hour. When the
jammer's carrier is off, Bihlmayer, who lives in Southern Germany, says
he's

heard a weak carrier on 14.050 MHz broadcasting a Chinese program that
included speech.

Note the use of 14050, and the breaks on the hour - just in time for
Kevin to get the net started!
