[Elecraft] Finished KPA100; problem HiCur and Hirefl

2007-03-30 Thread Koert Wilmink

Dear all,
I just finished my KPA100. I do have the following problem with the
first steps connecting the KPA100 to my K2 #05618.
I've connected the ribbon cable, speaker and RF connector to my K2. I've
got audio and I also receive stations when I connect my antenna.
With my dummy load and after setting power to 5Watts on 40M I see the 5
watts and the SWR for 1 second in the LCD screen and then the HiCur
(High current) appears on the LCD.On 20m bands I only see the PWR in
the LCD screen without the SWR for 1 second and than I see HiRefl. On
10M I do see the pwr and the SWR! The latter I only get 2.1 watts when
set to 5 watts.
Please can somebody tell me where to start? I did check the connections
and this seems to be ok. There is no pwr to the KPA100 so everything is
bypassed, except the bandfilters?

help is very much appreciated!.

2007-03-30 Thread Petr Ourednik
Hi folks,

as my K2(sn:4800) is probably sick I would like to ask for help. I found
few days ago that on 20m (and maybe higher bands too) rx lost
sensitivity. No sigs and even ATU tunning a lot and much more hard the
same antenna.
First time it lost sensitivity only partly then even more often and now
for all the time.
I remember that few days ago when pb started helped sometime to touch
key when after dots comes sensitivity back. Now does not help anything.
When I switch to 40m or lower it sounds all good...

Thank You for tips to all,

[Elecraft] K2 Alignment Part I

2007-03-30 Thread Gerard Provoost

Hi Folks,

I have a strange behaviour with my K2 #6026 in the alignment and test
procedure at page 43 of the manual. All went ok, untill after power up I
tapped Display, the display said St L 040 and stayed in that menu, untill I
tapped Menu, then everything was normal and stayed normal - untill next
power up. I tried to reset the EEPROM, by powering up with 4+5+6 held, but
this had no effect. It seems nothing is reset. All other tests went ok.

I checked and rechecked soldering.
If anyone has an idea, please.

[Elecraft] query on power readout

2007-03-30 Thread chris meagher

Hello there from VK,

I am investigating severe loss of TX power on my K2.
With 5W set, I get almost no power, the RF detector input measured with
the RF probe/DMM shows 0.009V.

however, the display reads approx. 5W out.
The reading on pin 2 of U8 on control board is 0.55V.

This would suggest to me that U8 is trying to deliver maximum power,
which is what it ought to do if only 0.009V is seen at the detector.
All detector components seem to be OK.

What I don't understand is how the LCD is reading 5W on transmit.

Other TX RF measurements (with SSB board still installed, rig set on CW
mode)

Q6 base = 0.021V
Q6 collector = 0.88V
Q7 base = 0.089V
Q8 base = 0.108V
(would have expected Q7 8 to be the same)
Receive and menu functions all appear normal.

Any ideas welcome, or advice as to where to look next.

[Elecraft] Re: DSP and CW? the Practical Solution?

2007-03-30 Thread DOUGLAS ZWIEBEL

My 2 cents...

1. Buy the DSP and try it. You can always sell it if you don't like it.

2. If you don't like a loop, try a noise-canceller. Since you are
stuck with your sub 1/8 acre, this is a good option.

Try http://www.mfjenterprises.com/products.php?prodid=MFJ-1026

I believe that if you buy direct, you get a 30 day trial period after
which you can return it. Sounds worth it to me (at least in your
case).

3. Remember, the more tools you have, the more likely that you'll
find a solution to any given problem at any given time. Sometimes one
will work better (best?) while other times something different
(another tool) will do the job.

4. If you are nearly 100% cw, I hope you are using COMMUNICATIONS
quality headphones (and I sure hope you are using headphones and not a
speaker). You can try different headphones which are cheap.
Remember, the worse the Freq response (such as for audiophile types),
the cheaper it is, but the better it is for cw. Many decades ago, the
BEST headphones I ever owned for cw was a $9 pair of Lafayettes.
Horrible for listening to the stereo (mush) but great for cw. I
almost cried when they fell apart after 15 years of daily service (not
salvageable).

5. Don't forget to try wide bandwidths also...you never know. When
I used to DX on 160 using my Kenwood TS940, my cascaded 500 cycle
filters heard much worse on some signal than using no narrow filters
at all (again, for cw). Weird, but I did what worked.

Summary:

Buy the DSP, if n/g, sell it
Buy a noise canceller, if n/g, return it.
Try a loop if you can figure out a practical way to turn it inside
your house (hopefully, outside your shack).

Re: [Elecraft] query on power readout

2007-03-30 Thread Don Wilhelm

Chris,

When the K2 is attempting to deliver maximum power, Control Board U8 pin
2 will be near 5 volts. The 0.55 volts that you measure there indicates
that it is controlling at a much lower power level.

If you do not have either the KAT2, the KPA100, or the KAT100 installed,
the K2 does not display the actual power output on the LCD (the
requested power is displayed briefly when the power control is changed).
What is the indication on the LED bargraph during transmit?

From your RF voltage measurements, the voltage at the base and
collector of Q6 appear to be about correct for about a 3 to 4 watt
level, but the RF voltage at the bases of Q7 and Q8 is much lower than
typical for that level. Check T2 as your first action. Be certain it
is wound just like the illustration in the manual (particularly the
dressing of the green wire), be certain the leads are well tinned and
properly soldered, and that T2 is mounted off the board by 2 to 3 mm.

Also check the soldering at the RF detector and its associated voltage
divider resistors.

The behavior of the K2 for power control is such that if it does not
detect power output equal to the power detected on the VRFDET signal,
then the microprocessor will attempt to increase power until the power
is equal to the requested power. If that is not happening, then the
detector driving the VRFDET line may have a problem, or the VPWR and
VALC signals (control Board ALC components) may not be working properly,
or the BFO injection to the transmit mixer (RF Board Q24 and its
associated components) may not be working properly.

Re: [Elecraft] Re: Sidetone not working

2007-03-30 Thread Don Wilhelm

Gil,

The most likely 'problem' is that you inadvertently toggled the sidetone
source when you were doing something else in the menu. Proceed as follows:

Enter the menu, select STL and hold EDIT to edit the parameter - first
be certain the parameter is set at a level high enough to hear (020
should be good). Then tap the DISPLAY button to toggle the sidetone
source. Stop when you hear the sidetone.

If you still do not have sidetone after several attempts and you have a
pre-3000 SN K2 that has been upgraded to change the sidetone source to
U8-4, then you should check the wires added to the back of the Control
Board. The proper wire placement is shown in the KPA100 and KIO2 manuals.

Has anyone had the experience of getting most things going OK, then

works OK, but when I push the same button for more than two seconds, I
don't get the sidetone anymore. I was using it for a little paddle key
code practice over two weeks ago, before the flu hit me, and now it's MIA!

Any ideas, aside from replacing U2? That Front Panel board is a little
complex to take apart regularly, and I'd like to use my K2 on the air
someday.

2007-03-30 Thread Don Wilhelm

Petr,

It sounds like the typical behavior when the receive antenna (RANT) is
set on - the setting is available on a per band basis.

Set the K2 to 20 meters, enter the menu and scroll to RANT. If the
parameter is ON, press the EDIT button and change it to OFF.

There is little else that can effect the receive sensitivity on a single
band.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Alignment Part I

Gerard,

If you had ST L come up when you tapped the DISPLAY button, that is
abnormal behavior, and is an indication that the pushbutton matrix is
not being properly decoded.

Check the soldering on the Front Panel Board carefully. Reflow the
soldering with a hot soldering iron if necessary.

A master reset is not likely to help.

Re: [Elecraft] headphone jack

2007-03-30 Thread Don Wilhelm

Ken,

It is true that the headphone jack can be damaged by the torque imparted
by the weight of an adapter plugged directly into the headphone jack.

The easiest solution is to build an adapter cable - a miniature phone
plug at one end and a 1/4 inch in-line phone jack at the other end. The
heavy weight of the 1/4 inch phone plug can then rest on the table and
there is not excessive torque on the headphone jack.

If you need an 'already assembled' variety, purchase a headphone
extension cable (one having miniature plugs and jacks) and use the
adapter plug at the end of the extension cable.

Re: [Elecraft] Finished KPA100; problem HiCur and Hirefl

2007-03-30 Thread Don Wilhelm

Koert,

Make a quick continuity check first - from the center conductor of the
J1 coax to the center of the SO239 antenna jack. There should be
continuity on all bands (the ribbon cable should be connected for this
test).

Next, be certain R26 and R27 are set at their midpoint. If the problem
persists, check T4 very carefully for correct lead positioning and
properly tinned and soldered leads. Be certain the red wire goes
through the center of T4 and the bare wire from the SO239 center
connects to T4-6.

[Elecraft] well-known RCVR tip (but wasn't well-known by me!)

2007-03-30 Thread John Wiener
I have been operating my K2 for just under a year now. In that time
I ALWAYS have left the PRESELECTOR on and the RF Gain up all the
way. I should have known better, but in case there is someone else
in the group who has done likewise, here's a tip:

Under high QRM or adjacent channel interference, don't be afraid to
turn off PRESELECTOR or even use the ATTENUATOR. Both are extremely
effective in bringing a sig up out of the noise...as is decreasing RF
gain.

I know most everyone knows this but it took me a year to try it so I
thought I'd pass it along.

It's just one more way to appreciate how the K2 sings...a truly
great RCVR design.

Thanks for replies to my problem with filters - now sorted and I can
hear the same signal on all filter settings!

Got watts coming out the back but no QSOs - I find that the transmit
freq is more than 1 KHz lower than receive (which is about 2 KHz
lower than the digital display. Can't find anything on the site to
help but yet again sure I am doing something stupid.

Sounds as though there's still(!) an XFIL/BFO alignment problem.

1) Confirm that RIT (or XIT) has not been enabled.

2) What SIDETONE tone (ST P) have you selected?

3) Please send me the CAL FIL DAC (or frequency) values you now
have for both CWN and CW REV. AND the values for the filter
CENTER FREQ. (or DAC value) for each bandwith you've chosen.

4) On what band did you perform the CAL FIL operation? If you did
it on on 15M or above, you MUST INVERT the 'sense' of the side-
bands... e.g. CWN XFIL values will be ABOVE filter center
instead of being BELOW, etc. 40M is probably the best band to
   use when performing CAL FIL.

Cheers,

I saw that e-mail a while back, but I don't recall what was used.

For what little it may be worth, I REFUSE to plug ANY 'adaptor' into
any of the jacks of my rigs... PERIOD...!

If some form of 'adaptation' is required to go from a larger to a
smaller diameter connector (or the reverse), I will make a short (6
or so) CABLE with the requisite (adapting) connectors installed on each.

Using size-to-size adaptors places a significant amount of stress
upon the innards of connector jacks, especially the 3.5mm and 2.5mm
styles, which will often cause them to break and/or fail. Using short
adaptor CABLES, which reduce the amount of stress by 'remoting' the
heavy connecting plugs (and thus the weight) has allowed me to retain
all of the original jacks in my K2, and K1, since 1998.

Just my personal opinion... YMMV.

Cheers,

Tom Hammond N0SS

Re: [Elecraft] DSP and CW?

2007-03-30 Thread Chris Kantarjiev
Thanks for all the comments. I ordered a KDSP2 (and received notice that
it has shipped) and expect to have it in my K2 in time for my birthday
next weekend :-)

The discussion also seems to have pushed me over the edge on finally
investigating small loop antennas. The prospect of putting any
sort of rotating antenna outside is still difficult with my shack
arrangement (well, controlling an outside antenna from the inside,
that is), but I can see myself doing some experiments out at the
feed through...

I'll report back.

P.S. Thanks for the reminder of using a wide Xfil and the filter
between my ears. It definitely helps.

[Elecraft] Cabinet resonance

2007-03-30 Thread Ken Kopp

The combination of the cabinet and speaker of my
K2 (#5665) has a VERY pronounced resonance at
about 450 Hz. How fortunate, as this is the frequency
at which I like to copy CW. (:-)

The resonance is so pronounced that it would present
a problem if I wanted to use a higher frequency, say
600 Hz. It initially caused me a bit of consternation as
I was setting up the filters ... until I realized what was
going on. Even with the filter set up for 600 Hz I would
still find myself tuned and listening lower than the Spot
tone ... sort of a human AFC circuit. (:-)

Has anyone else noted this? I wonder if all the speakers
supplied with K2's are of the same design from the same
supplier?

Mine -does- have all options installed except the battery
and I assume the resonant frequency of the box would be
different ... or non-existant ... with different fillers inside
the case.

I have two of the old Skytech variable-resonance speakers
stored away that are fine examples of the application of
housing / speaker resonance as a CW aid. They use a sliding
tube to tune the assembly.

Re: [Elecraft] Cabinet resonance

2007-03-30 Thread Jozef Hand-Boniakowski
The K1 with the speaker does the same thing albeit at a higher
frequency. A couple of extra screws dead center on the top cover on
either side might cure that? What do people think? I use headphones
most of the time, but the lid resonance is not the best thing when
showing the rig off.

RE: [Elecraft] headphone jack

2007-03-30 Thread Dan Barker
And, use a right-angle plug at the rig end. Abuse to the wire doesn't stree
the rig nearly as much as the straight-in variety.

Dan / WG4S / K2 #2456 on original jack too!

If some form of 'adaptation' is required to go from a larger to a
smaller diameter connector (or the reverse), I will make a short (6
or so) CABLE with the requisite (adapting) connectors installed on each.

[Elecraft] KPA100 high output

2007-03-30 Thread Jeff Kinzli

Greetings Elecrafters,

K2 #5945 with KPA100 has been very happy lately, working lots of good
DX on the bands and teaching it's owner some new tricks :)

Anyhow, when I first finished the KPA100 a month or two ago, I noticed
some high output (like 140W) at times. It happens on 40M (well, that's
the band I'm on usually), and I'll see my wattmeter all of a sudden
start reading up around 140W. Bringing the power level doesn't have an
effect until the rig *thinks* it's down quite a bit lower, like 80W or
70W, then it seems to correct itself and it's fine from there on out,
with max power right around 100W for full-scale power settings.

Originally, we thought it might be due to an oscillation, and I have
replaced C31 (I think thats the one, I forget) with the new value to
stop the oscillations, but I seem to remember Don saying that when
there's an oscillation, the perceived SWR rises, and I don't think
that's happening.

So I'm wondering, perhaps I have a bug in the power sense section?
Maybe a bad solder joint or something?

The problem occurred numerous times the first weekend I had the KPA100
on the air, and hasn't happened since, until today. I was all excited
that the problem had gone away, but I seem to have jinxed myself :)

Any ideas, thoughts, or otherwise?

Thanks,

Jeff N6GQ

Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 high output, again

2007-03-30 Thread Don Wilhelm

Jeff,

Yes, look for a solder problem in any of the circuits from the wattmeter
sense (T4) area to the VRFDET output of the KPA100. Look at the
schematic sheet 1 in the upper right corner (SWR BRIDGE) to identify the
associated components.

[Elecraft] KPA100 build questions

2007-03-30 Thread Mike Short
I just bought a KPA100 that was originally purchased in 2002. It is
unassembled.
I ordered the firmware update, the KPA100UPKT and the shield upgrade. With
this I should be
able to build it up using the latest manual, yes? Would I not use the
component values in the latest
manual and go as if it was a recent amp?
