I don't know about the H-mode mixer, but the Tayloe
mixer has been
patented
by Motorola.

Product detector and method therefor was filed in
1998 and granted in
2001
as US patent 6,230,000. See
http://www.google.com/patents?id=FsIGEBAJdq=US+623

The origin of the Tayloe mixer has been questioned
several time on this side of the pond.

In the 70s in Technical Topics column of Radio
Communication, or at that time still called RSGB
Bulletin, a similar circuit was published by a G-Ham.
It was an SSB Modulator for an HF phased transmitter.
It used CMOS ICs. I do not remember if it did use
CD4053 or something similar.
The improvement on the Tayloe mixer came with the use
of FST3253

Re: [Elecraft] K3 microphone wiring ?

2007-05-12 Thread Don Wilhelm

Barry,

I believe the K3 comes permanently wired for the Elecraft microphones,
and that means there is a resistor between 5 volts and pin 1 (AF). If
one wants to use a microphone that would object to having that voltage
present on pin 1, a series DC blocking capacitor should be used.

My reasons to support those conclusions are the fact that Lyle said the
K3 mic is wired just like it would be in the K2 with all jumpers wired
straight across, coupled with the fact that the MH2 microphone is again
being offered for use with the K2 and K3 - if it did not require the
resistor, I would expect to see a change in the microphone numbering
designation.

Barry McWilliams wrote:

Thanks for the additional information in the FAQ about microphones.
But I still have a question.

The wiring for the K2 MD-2, MH-2 microphones and the Heil headset has 5V
applied to pin 1 through a 5.6k resistor.

Will the K3 be able to supply 5V on pin 1 through a 5k resistor via a
jumper or some sort of configuration option? If not, I don't think the
current Elecraft microphones will work properly.

I remember the fun of working NSS, AIR and WAR on cw and getting their

to copy the Sec. of Def.'s Broadcast on CW and get a certificate for that.

I was planning on re-joining MARS until I saw that they do not do CW any

Re: [Elecraft] KNB2

2007-05-12 Thread Don Wilhelm

David,

To test, turn on the preamp and tap Q21 with a screwdriver tip - you can
tell when the sharp 'clicking' with each tap is taken out by the KNB2.

There is not a lot of circuitry on the KNB2, so I suggest that you check
all the components for correct values, and in the right positions. Make
certain the diodes are oriented in the correct direction.

Look at the schematic and identify the voltages that will be present for
the 2 thresholds (U3 pin 6) and the two pulse widths (U3 pin 7). If you
have a logic probe or better yet a 'scope, you should be able to see if
the one-shot is producing gate pulses (collector of Q4).

Remember the most common cause of problems is the soldering followed by
poorly tinned toroid leads and misplaced components - check these
carefully as your first efforts, try to look at it critically as though
someone else had built it.

RE: [Elecraft] KNB2

2007-05-12 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
I'm offering this just on the off-chance you haven't tried it.

Sometimes the noise level that roars out of the speaker with the AF gain
turned up really isn't strong enough to trigger the NB even at low threshold
levels. In that case, turning the Preamp On (and turning the audio gain
down) often causes the noise to disappear!

I wonder if your friend had his K2's preamp on and you didn't when you ran
the side-by-side test? A lot of operators leave the preamp on all the time.
The K2's design allows that to be done without any obvious problems in most
situations.

You are correct. The front phones jack is a 1/4-in plug and the phones on
the back panel is 1/8-in.

Another interesting feature is that you can plug headphones into both jacks
at the same time. So when contesting, if you want to have an additional set

RE: [Elecraft] loaded K2 vs K3

2007-05-12 Thread Greg
Doug,

I've done the same comparison. But what you have to remember is that the K2
and K3 are designed for two different purposes. The K2 is a great portable
all-in-one self contained radio for taking out to the field. The K3 is
designed as a top line contesting/dx rig that is portable enough for taking
on dxpeditions with much more ease than other radios.

Two different purposes, two great radios, one great company!

Hope I've done the math correctly.

K2 $629 (40 hours average 1st time build?)
KSB2 $ 99
K160rx $ 39
K60XV $ 89
KNB2 $ 39
KDSP2$229
KIO2$ 89
Total $1,213

K3/10$1,399 (tons more features/ability than K2)

---OR

K2   $629   (50++ hours average 1st time build??)
KPA100 $389
KSB2 $ 99
K160rx $ 39
K60XV $ 89
KNB2 $ 39
KDSP2 $229
KAT100$239
Total $1,752

K3/100 $1,749 (7-10 hours mechanical assembly)
KAT3 $ 259
total $2,008

Comments?

Re: [Elecraft] loaded K2 vs K3

2007-05-12 Thread sheajohnw
Why not have both?:) Actually, its all a matter of what features one
needs most and the type of building experience wanted.

K3 appears to have been designed to be the best competative full
featured HF + 6M or contest rig possible that could be assembled,
aligned, and repaired by the user from premade SMT circuit boards and
components. SMT technology was necessary to achieve the high
performance design objectives for the K3 wanted by the designers and
requested by K2 users.

The K2 was designed to be assembled from individual components and be
the best possible portable QRP CW/SSB rig having the lowest electric
power demand possible. The K2 design objectives limited certain
features desirable for a base/contest rig, but it is still arguably the
best rig for its intended purpose.

Although the K2 has been found to perform unusually well as a
base/contest rig, that was not its intended purpose as it is for the
K3. The K3 should be better as a base rig as it did not have the K2's
design goals limiting its performance possibilities for base rig use.
The K3 should also be a good portable rig for Field Day type events
where moving weight and the provision of electric power is not overly
difficult.

The KX1 and K1 are best for backpacking to distant remote sites using
CW mode on minimal battery power. The K2 can provide greater TX power
and performance features where it is possible to transport some
additional weight and battery power as well as TX/RX in SSB mode.

Although the K3 is not able to provide the individual component based
construction desired by many, others will prefer the simpler
construction for the user, or wish to forego building entirely. The K3
may be less user repirable than the K2, K1, and KX1 as replacement
surface mount circuit boards are likely to be available only from
Elecraft while the other Elecraft kits have circuit board components
that are not only more user replacable but available, if necessary,
from multiple sources. The K3 should be well ahead of other rig makers
products when it comes to repairability as K3 users should be able to
easily repair their rigs through board replacement and perform
realignment.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcemnt

2007-05-12 Thread Kevin Rock

Good Evening,
Another fine week has slipped past. The weather here in Oregon has
really started to turn. My daffodils are almost done blooming. Yes, they
bloomed for almost two full months. In the valley they've been gone for
quite a while. This week finally turned ours into seed pods. There are a
few left to pick for Pat so I'll get that done tomorrow before they are
all gone. I took a long walk today off the edge of the property. There
are quite a few strawberry and thimbleberry blossoms. I don't have a
chance against the critters but I do hope for at least a few for myself.
I saw some very large elk tracks on my trip. About eight inch diameter
divots in the soil. They broke a very nice trail for me to hike along.
I did work on 20 meters a couple of times this week and it went very
well. A little QSB but not to the point of troubling copy; just
noticeable. I have listened on forty a little but have been too busy to
do much more than that. I've kept my solder pad quite wet for the last
two weeks. I know I said I would do that over the last winter but that
tree threw my schedule all out of whack. Maybe this winter will be more
relaxed :)
Soon the dry season will be here and with that carpentry season begins
for me. It will be great fun getting this house repaired and my nephew
trained in some new skills. First we get to move my radio shack,
electronics work bench and shelves containing test gear, plus a few of the
computers back to their old location far from the woodstove. Then we seal
off the rest of the house and do some demolition. Once we can see the
outside world we get to replace the entire roof from rafters, to sheeting,
to drywall, to tc. After we strip off the covering I'll know better how
much of the structure needs to be replaced. I may cripple in some framing
if it's not too bad. Otherwise I'll replace it.
Tomorrow there are supposed to be some showers here but nothing to
interfere with RF propagation. The Midwest will have its normal
thundershowers but hopefully they'll hold off until late into the forty
meter net. If all goes well we can have a few relays around the worst of
the storms to help hear one another. A few more dB would be nice so I can
work into Florida unimpeded by very weak signals. Maybe I should look at
different headphones with more sensitivity. That may prove the difference
between good copy and a struggle to check you in.

   Tomorrow:

1) Hail signs (first letter or two of the suffix of your call)
2) NCS help (as well as QSP/QNP relay help)

   Please join us:

Sunday 2300z (Sunday 4 PM PDT) 14050 kHz
Monday 0200z (Sunday 7 PM PDT) 7045 kHz
