[Elecraft] A miracle or am I getting old??? I need help!

2007-06-28 Thread Peter Zenker
Good morning friends

An elder friend om mine got his new K2 ready a couple of days ago, it worked
fantastic. After some playing with the menues a miracle appeared:

The receiver does not receive, in CW mode the mode indicator changes from c
to F every 2-3 seconds. NO, it´s not the r for rtty plus the bar for CW
reverse, it´s a complete F

I am pretty sure I never have seen before this flashing Fm I traced the
manual to find everything with the word flash in it - no success.
The K2 is a CW only machine, extra Modules are AF Filter and RS232

Any Idea??

[Elecraft] A miracle or am I getting old??? Problem solved (at least partially)

2007-06-28 Thread Peter Zenker
Good morning friends

The elder friend did some more playing with the menue and he found the
fault:

D19 was set to Y(es) After switching to n, the Receieiver started receiving
signals again and the flashing F disappeared.

So far so good. I just set my own K2 to D19 Y. No flashing F :-(((

However, his K2 is running, he is happy

Hi Peter,

The flashing 'F' indicates that fast play mode is in effect, which
allows you to use a subset of the keypad switches as one-touch CW
message buttons. The particular subset of switches used is set up in
the FPLY menu entry (secondary menu), and to turn it on/off you have to
assign one of the special-function switches to it. This is covered in
the manual.

[Elecraft] Another question about L34 adjustment IF Amp.

2007-06-28 Thread Gary D Krause
After reading another post about adjusting L34 for the IF amplifier, I have
another question. I've wondered about this since completing my K2. The
manual was a bit confusing and from what I can remember, it said to adjust L34
for the strongest signal and lowest background noise. It also said that a DMM
could be used across the speaker output to get a more accurate reading. Well,
my question at the time was how can you get the strongest signal and lowest
background noise with only one adjustment. So, I figured it would be a
compromise between the two. I adjusted L34 but, not exactly to it's highest
volume or loudest signal.

Now I've learned that it should be adjusted for the loudest signal and that
includes the background noise. So, can I now go back and readjust L34 for
maximum volume and if so what else will I have to align? I assume that I
would only have to re-calibrate the bar-graph, is that correct?

Thanks,
Gary, N7HTS

Re: [Elecraft] Another question about L34 adjustment IF Amp.

2007-06-28 Thread Tom Hammond

Hi Gary:

There's a tuning point, just below the point on L34 where you DO
achieve max. received signal, where the background noise will drop
off faster than the received signal. It's (if I recall) about 1/2 to
1 full turn DOWN from the point of max RX sig.

If you have Spectrogram installed, you can actually see it on the
spectral display... it's NOT a terribly dramatic effect, but it is
observable... you WILL lose a bit of received signal strength, BUT
it's more than compensated for by the fact that the signal-to-noise
ratio has been improved, so to signal seems to 'stand out' a bit
better, even though it may be a couple dB lower in level.

[Elecraft] Swapping Standard 2.7 kHz 5-pole Filter

2007-06-28 Thread Bill Tippett

According to Monica at Elecraft, it's possible to swap
the standard 2.7 kHz 5-pole filter for either the 2.8 kHz 8-pole or
the 400 Hz 8-pole for an incremental $90 ($30 credit plus the
standard $120 charge for 8-pole filters), but only the 2.8 kHz
and 400 Hz may be substituted for the standard filter.

Now if we only knew if there were any difference in
IMD/BDR performance we could make a rational decision...

Re[2]: [Elecraft] K3 Questions

2007-06-28 Thread Corboy-Poteet
David. let me pose a question: if you converted the digitized voice
signal to mp3 or ogg format, is this similar to (or the same as) a
freq domain data stream? The data compression from CD wav file to mp3
is around 10 to 1; you are certainly not storing a digital copy of the
sound wave. Voice compression may not be so good but still should
result in the need to transfer considerably less data in order to
assure a useful voice recovery on the receiving end.

Mike W5FTD

 Stuart Rohre wrote:
In the basics of digitizing the signal you have to clock the conversion at
least twice the highest frequency you want to reproduce in the voice (or
 audio) signal.

That's only at the input to the encoding chain (and technically it is
twice the bandwidth, not twice the highest frequency).

However, I would imagine all digital modes that would be used for
communications, rather than broadcasting (and for that matter, also
those used in modern broadcasting systems) don't send time domain data.
One way or another they send frequency domain data, often in the form
of just the formant frequencies used in a model of vocal tract resonances.

The critical rate for these systems is the syllable rate, not the
frequency of the highest component. I seem to remember that the
military were using 2400 bits per second codecs maybe a couple of
decades ago.I suspect that was partly do do with how fast they could
 encrypt.

Mobile phone codecs tend to be vocal tract model based, although they
use more than 2400 bps so that the voice sounds reasonably natural (but
try them on modem tones or even music!).

To get much better than 2400 bps, I think you would probably have to
recognize phonemes, which is basically the continuous speech voice
recognition problem. I think that might get you down to about 300
 bits per second.

[Elecraft] WA3WSJ: K6XX Visual CW Kits Gone!

2007-06-28 Thread Edward R. Breneiser
Hello all,

Boy, all my spare K6XX Visual CW Indicator Kits are gone!

If anyone wants one of these really neat little kits, send an email to
the EPA QRP Club as they will take over selling these kits! Yes, I put
one in my K1 then my K2 and now in my KX1 and all work great. All you do
is tune onto a station until you see the LED flashing to the CW. That's
it no zero beating or messing around. You will be within +- 20hz of the
cw station!

Give the EPA QRP Club a week or so before they offer these little nifty
SMD kits. This is a great kit to build as a start into SMT Technology!
Remember you can mount this kit in any CW rig as all it takes is power
and audio.

For now you can still check it out on my website, but I took off all the
PayPal links.

Look for the EPA QRP Club to offer these kits soon.

I don't know the fine details of ogg, but mp3 is certainly frequency

mp3 is fairly complicated, and designed for music, which is more
demanding that speech. It basically works by noting that the ear cannot
detect weak sounds close in frequency to strong ones (the K2 is a bad

in the end, everything is coded as the spectrum not the time domain

Actually, that's the compression used to try and match CD quality. For

Re: [Elecraft] [K2 4922] IF Amplifier Alignment

2007-06-28 Thread Don Wilhelm

David,

Jack Smith has characterized the K2 AGC curves (along with some other
rigs) and you may find some useful information on his website:
http://www.cliftonlaboratories.com/receiver_agc_curves.htm

The IF AMP AGC input is really current driven, so trying to obtain a
direct relationship between the voltage and the AGC action is
problematic at best - yes, I know the data sheet expresses the AGC
voltage in the curves, but that is based on the operating conditions
stated in the data sheet.

When you set up the AGC Threshold voltage in the K2 to 3.8 volts, you
are not reading the voltage into the MC1350, but rather reading an
indirect control point voltage - the actual AGC drive to the MC1350 is
two active devices 'down the road' from where the AGC Threshold is set.

What I can say for certain is that I have had to re-visit the AGC
Threshold and S-meter settings after completing assembly of any K2 that
I have built or repaired (I have built many and repaired many more) -
for instance, the filter passband alignment will influence the S-meter
response, so the S-meter should best be set after the final filter
alignment.

True, the manual does not explicitly state that one should re-adjust the
S-meter settings after all the other alignment is done, but it does hint
at it.

One can 'play' with the AGC Threshold voltage setting to achieve better
receive sensitivity with no input signal, but move it very far below 3.8
volts and the S-meter settings and response gets 'squirrelly', so if you
choose to do that, plan on a lot of interactive 'playing' with the AGC
Threshold, CAL S Lo and CAL S Hi - the manual settings are a compromise,
but they do work and work quite well - vary from them as you wish, but
do so at your own peril, the 'standard' settings can be easily restored.

I don't believe the manual says this, although I've only got to the 40m

I'm actually having great fun trying to work out how the AGC system
really works and really should be calibrated. One complication is that
the MC1350 is only characterised for a 12 volt supply, but the K2 uses
8. If I understand the internals of the chip properly, the AGC range
will be constant but the threshold will reduce by one volt for every two
volts reduction in supply voltage, so the 5 to 7 volts range in the data
sheet will correspond with 3 to 5 volts in the K2 (at the V AGC point,
not at U2 pin 5). Is that right?

Another question is how one gets 88dB+ of S meter range (6dB * (9 - 1) +
40dB) from an AGC system with a maximum range of 68dB, especially when
the initial S meter calibration uses less than 1.3 volts of the
available 2 volt control range?

Another one is that the design seems to assume a gain balance between
the AF and AGC IF chains, but the differential gain is subject to
production spread in the NE612 chips (minimum to typical gain of 3dB and
unspecified typical to maximum gain). It also depends, to a lesser
extent, on the output impedance of the 612 in the AGC chain. The AF
chain will depend on the loss in the second filter; I don't know enough
about crystal filters to estimate this. There are probably some other
factors.

(I think there is a deliberate 6dB difference in that the nominal gain
of the U2a op amp is about 22 (33k explicit over 1.5k output
resistance), and the LM 380 has a nominal gain of 50).

I wonder if the feedback resistor on U2a really could do with being a
variable. Although you can get a similar effect with R1 (because the
main part of the AGC response is exponential), you lose range on the RF
gain control.

[Elecraft] K2 top cover accessories FS

2007-06-28 Thread K0PQar
Hello everyone,

This is a re-post of my earlier message which drew no responses.

I have a new K2 top cover for sale. It is equipped with a new KAT2 tuner and a
KIO2 port attached in addition to the K2 speaker. The cover and all of its
components work very well. All connecting cables and assembly manuals are
included.

My only reason for offering these components for sale is that my new KPA100 and
KAT100 make them surplus to my needs.

My asking price for the package is $150 plus shipping to your QTH. I guarantee
your satisfaction and will happily refund your money if you are not satisfied.

I will also consider selling individual components from the cover. Let me know
your wishes off-line.

73 to all,

[Elecraft] Reversed connections from KIO2 to KAT100

2007-06-28 Thread Gil Gibbs
I've hit a wall with one of the strangest situations, having simply
not taken time to recheck all my connections on the DB9 connector from
the KIO2 to the KAT100. I had the KIO2 pins reversed in color order,
from 6 to 9, plugged it in to smoke test the circuit to the KAT100, and
got zero results. When I checked with Gary, I was informed that some
seven parts, on three boards, have to be replaced, and I'm wondering if
anyone else has had this same miscue, can give me hints about what other
problems have been caused by the miswiring? I have to do a lot of major
surgery on the boards, and might have to realign the Control Board. Any
hints and kinks beyond the missives I've already gotten will be
appreciated. Murphy's Law strikes again, right at a critical time!!

Re: [Elecraft] Reversed connections from KIO2 to KAT100

2007-06-28 Thread Stuart Rohre
Gil, a good technique is to make a copy of the schematic, maybe even with
magnification, to see more easily where the leads of the connector go, (to
which components). Then, with a colored pencil, trace out each pin to what
it is connected to (component), and evaluate what the reversed voltage
situation was, and then, if it could have failed the component connected to
the pin.

For example, consider that a capacitor might be connected to the pin you are
tracing. If it is a ceramic disk, it is not polarity sensitive and likely
would also be rated at a voltage high enough to withstand anything
mis-connected to it.

But, if the capacitor had been electrolytic, and the wiring problem placed a
negative voltage on the positive side of the capacitor, you likely would
want to change it, in case it has been compromised or stressed, even if it
is not showing short or open at this time. In a like manner, you can find
what active components, (transistors or ICs) might need to be swapped if
they endured reversed voltages, or overvoltage, such as an input being
connected to a DC bus voltage.

[Elecraft] how I drew my own conclusions ...

2007-06-28 Thread Steve Jackson
There's recently been some discussion here about the
digital voice capabilities of the K3.

Disclaimer: I don't pretend to even have the slightest
idea what's in the minds of the K3 designers, or their
marketing direction.

I have seen the AOR DV 'modem' ... but I've never met
G4GUO. I'm not a TAPR member, but I've thought about
it.

However, I *have* read this paper, right to the end:

http://www.temple.edu/k3tu/VocoderRedux.pdf

and that is how I drew my own conclusions about what's
possible, if you build a radio like the K3.

Nope. Not enough room. The K2/100 is quite full. BTW, a K2/100
doesn't need the KIO2 option, it is built into the KPA100.

Re: [Elecraft] Swapping Standard 2.7 kHz 5-pole Filter

2007-06-28 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft

Hi Bill,

This is incorrect. The 2.7 kHz 5-pole can only be swapped for a 2.8 kHz
or possibly the 2.1 kHz 8 pole filters. We require at least one SSB b/w
filter in each K3 as it ships since we must also transmit through the
filter for SSB and data modes. Transmitting through the 2.1 kHz filter
will limit your tx bandwidth to that value. ( I'm not aware of many
choosing the 2.1 as their only SSB filter - I may drop that as a swap
option to make sure no overly narrow TX K3s get out there and confuse
the market.)

I'll post some more detailed DR numbers on the 5 pole vs 8 pole filters
in the next couple of days. The short answer is that the 5 pole filters
have slightly less IMD3 dynamic range and a wider shape factor than the
8 pole filters, but both are very good. The 250 Hz 8-pole and the 200 Hz
5 pole are both at least 95+ dB DR3 at 5 kHz, with the 8 pole beating
out the 5 pole by several dB. We've been testing a number of each filter
on a range of K3s to make sure we can conservatively spec them across
filter variations and rig variations. :-)

One other note - The sales person you talked to is Annika. There is no
Monica at Elecraft, unless they are hiding her somewhere! ;-) She was
clear on which filters could be swapped for the 2.7, but I'll check
with her for sure tomorrow.

Bill Tippett wrote:

According to Monica at Elecraft, it's possible to swap
the standard 2.7 kHz 5-pole filter for either the 2.8 kHz 8-pole or
the 400 Hz 8-pole for an incremental $90 ($30 credit plus the
standard $120 charge for 8-pole filters), but only the 2.8 kHz
and 400 Hz may be substituted for the standard filter.

Now if we only knew if there were any difference in
IMD/BDR performance we could make a rational decision...

Re: [Elecraft] KAT100

2007-06-28 Thread Don Wilhelm

Scott,

If you have the KIO2 installed then you must actually have the KPA100
installed in an external EC2 enclosure - if that is true, then yes, the
KPA100 and the KAT100-2 can live together in the external EC2 enclosure.

BUT, if you are trying to fit everything into one K2 package with the
KPA100 as the top cover on a K2, then neither the KIO2 nor the KAT100
will fit - the KPA100 takes the entire available physical space. The
KPA100 does include the KIO2 functions, but not the KIO2 itself.

Is 2.1kHz really overly narrow for SSB transmit? I know people are
talking about 1.8kHz filters for RX, and it seems useless to transmit
energy that's not going to be used. It's certainly wide enough for
data modes. In fact, it might be useful to be able to TX through the
400Hz filter in some of those modes.

I wish people would understand that hitting reply on a message
in order to pick up the list address is not the correct way to start
a new thread.
Charles, your intended top level, new thread, is nested two deep
in the KAT100 thread started by Scott.

Hitting reply and changing the subject does not start a new thread.
Threads, (references in the usually invisible headers), are a way to
allow changing subjects as topics change and still link to the origins.

Hitting reply within a thread with an unrelated topic is not only
bad netiquette, the sender risks those bored with the thread won't
even see it because they don't open the possibly uninteresting thread
below which it was posted.
