[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2007-08-26 Thread Kevin Rock

Good Evening,
And a very late one indeed! I just got in and need to get to bed so
this shall be brief.

I tried finding the foxes on Thursday evening and worked the entire 90
minutes to no avail. Not even a hound was heard. I did read about folks
in Washington and Oregon working them but I never heard a peep out of the
pack. I think my antennas are still up. The cayenne has kept the
squirrels at bay. I wish they would leave the rest of the house alone but
they are collecting cones. Each morning I hear them falling from the sky
upon my roof. Who needs an alarm clock?

Please join us tomorrow evening to test the propagation.

 Tomorrow:

1) Hail signs (first letter or two of the suffix of your call)
2) NCS help (as well as QSP/QNP relay help)

   Please join us:

Sunday 2300z (Sunday 4 PM PDT) 14050 kHz
Monday 0200z (Sunday 7 PM PDT) 7045 kHz

   73,
  Kevin. KD5ONS

[Elecraft] Chokes

2007-08-26 Thread David Robertson
JT,

The chokes you have will work. The color of the body makes no difference to
the actual value.

Elecraft had to change the type of choke after printing the manual because of
choke failures during installation.

Be careful when installing your chokes as bending the leads too close to the
choke's body can result in the choke opening up.

It might be good practice to measure the resistance of the choke before and
after installation. The resistance of the choke after installation will either
be the same or lower depending on the circuit.

Good Luck

Re: [Elecraft] Antenna tuners

2007-08-26 Thread Don Wilhelm

Walt and all,

Just one clarification (for the protection of your KAT100 and K2).

The KAT100 does not talk with any RS-232 signals. It does connect to
the K2 AUX I/O connector, but that is not rs-232 either - there are only
3 RS-232 signal lines (RXD, TXD and signal ground) in the AUX I/O
connector. All the rest of the signals are K2 unique for communicating
with the KAT100 (and remote KPA100 and/or KRC2).

This is a reminder that your K2 (and KAT100 and KPA100) can be damaged
by connecting a regular computer serial cable to the AUX I/O connector.
It is labeled AUX I/O for that very reason - it is NOT an RS-232 port.

Just because a serial cable will fit does not make it a serial port.

Don W3FPR

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I too have a KAT-100 and yes, it would be neat if that could be used
without the RS-232 connection to the K-2. Probably some way to trick
it into thinking it is connected to a K-2 :-)

Re: [Elecraft] K2 AGC, Seems a bit soft

2007-08-26 Thread Don Wilhelm

Paul,

You may find some information in the archives that could possibly help
your situation. Jack Smith K8ZOA has documented a good amount of info
on the AGC operation on his website and Dave White VE6DRW has created a
mod to give more control over the various AGC characteristics.
Look for their posts to the reflector in the February and March 2007
timeframe.

It is quite likely that neither of those sources will produce the
'strong AGC' that you seem to desire (most of us like the softer K2
AGC), but may be worthwhile for study as a prelude to your re-design of
the K2 AGC.

On the lack of ability to get the AGC Threshold up to 3.8 volts - do not
be overly concerned about that - the maximum voltage is related to the 8
volt regulator actual voltage. Furthermore, if your AGC is active even
with no signal, you should *lower* the AGC Threshold voltage. I know it
sounds counter-intuitive, but results from the point where the voltage
is measured. Warning, if your AGC Threshold voltage is too low, your
S-meter settings will become a bit 'squirrelly', and for that reason I
recommend that you do not reduce the AGC Threshold below 3.65 volts in
any case.

Changes from the 'standard' designs and settings may be made, that is
part of the K2 'fun' - try it and see what happens, you can always set
it back to the 'standard'.

Paul Pollock wrote:
I am enjoying my recently completed K2-6148 very much, but I had a
couple of questions and thought others might have some constructive
thoughts.

While some folks like a slightly soft AGC in the receiver, I'm one of
those folks that finds that soft signals received softer than loud
signals (especially SSB) is tiring. I prefer a very stiff and level
AGC. Mind you, this has nothing to do with the fast/slow delay rates
or anything along those lines.

1). My K2 exhibits good AGC performance and I believe it works as
designed, but it is a soft AGC. Are there any ideas on modifications
to the AGC IC (LM833) that might stiffen the AGC performance?

2). I'm another of those folks where my AGC threshold voltage will not
go above 3.7x volts. It is my feeling that a threshold set so that the
AGC actually releases at the noise level is better than a setting
where the AGC is ON at all levels. On my K2 the AGC never releases at
any level. Any thoughts on getting the AGC to release correctly?

[Elecraft] OT - Astron RS-20A Issue

2007-08-26 Thread Lee Buller
Ladies and Gents

I repaired an RS-20A recently. The balancing resistors from the pass
transistors had burned up because someone put a 15 amp fuse on the primary side
with a load more that 16 to 20 amp on the 13.8 volt side.

Not ever done this before, I made sure the 723 was set at 13.8 volts and then
used a 12 volt light as a load. She regulated quite well.

But now, the regulation voltage has increase to 15.5 volts. This happened over
a 24 hour period. This does not seem right to me...and I wonder what some of
you thing about this.

[Elecraft] KAT2 instructions - error?

2007-08-26 Thread Andrew Moore
KAT2 rev D manual, page 12.

Step says

Secure the L-C board to the Control board standoffs using two 4-40 screws and
two #4 split lock washers. These lock washers go between the standoffs and the
PC board, not between the PC board and screws as on the control board.

---

However, page 6 diagram of control board screw/standoff assembly clearly shows
a different order: from bottom up: screw, Control board, washer, standoff. Not
what the above step says.

Is the manual wrong, or am I missing something?

Re: [Elecraft] KAT2 instructions - error?

2007-08-26 Thread Don Wilhelm

Andrew,

There must be a lockwasher at one end of the standoff - it is an overall
length thing, so it really does not matter which end of the standoff the
lockwasher is placed. Do what seems right - yes, the manual says it
both ways, and that is confusing. It is easier to put the lockwasher on
when first mounting the standoff than it is to slip a lockwasher on top
of the standoff when attaching the second board to the other end - that
is all there is to it. The manual words are correct, the diagram is
older and shows the 'hard' way to do it.

[Elecraft] OT - Astron RS-20A Issue Part II

2007-08-26 Thread Lee Buller

I adjusted the regulator without a load to about 13.80 volts. Over the last 24
hour it rose to 15.5 volts or so. It seem to regulate. I ran my two meter SSB
rig and a 100 Watt amp (15+ amp ICAS) last night without issue. I figure the
regulation percentages at around 2%...but this morning it rose to 15.5 v with
no load. Still regulates.

I will take a look for components that might be a little flaky. Just doesn't
make sense to me that a 723 would do this.

Fw: [Elecraft] K3 RX only in port - Summary

2007-08-26 Thread Dave G4GED
Many Thanks to everybody that responded, both via the Reflector and
privately.

To summarise, it seems the most straightforward and economical way of
achieving my requirement is to purchase the KXV3 transverter i/f, (or
optionally, but more expensive, the KAT3 ATU).
Altho' I have no need for either of these, the KXV3 does offer other
funtionality that may be useful to me in the future.

Wayne has announced that he will be drafting a set of drawings shortly,
illustrating the various Antenna port configurations. This will be a great
help to us all.
There are still many other functionality queries revolving around in my head
so really looking forward to publication of the K3 Manual and/or an in-depth
Review in QST or other Ham Mag.

Thanks again Guys
73 Dave

.
- Original Message -

Simply put, my primary initial use for the K3 would be for 160m DXing
using seperate RX antennas, so an RX-only i/p port is essential.

Please dont confuse me with too many fancy options. If I order the basic
unit+ Sub rcvr, what's the minimum accessory I need to order to provide
a RX-only i/p port function for the use intended above?

Re: [Elecraft] Antenna tuners

2007-08-26 Thread K8TB
Speaking of antenna tuners Is there any possiblity that the new
K3 antenna tuner can be put in a seperate box and be remotely
controlled? I use a 102' dipole, fed with balanced feedline, which then
goes into a back room in the basement. There, it hits a 4:1 balun, and
then it sees an LDG RT-11 (a remotelly controlled antenna tuner). I then
have 75 feet of coax from the antenna tuner to the shack.

This is the best of all possible worlds. Any mismtach is taken care
of by the tuner, and the subjected line loss of the coax. And it works
very well. I convinced a buddy of mine to try a balanced fed dipole, and
a remote antenna tuner, and he claims he has never had stronger signals
on 40 and 80 than before. (He had over 120 feet of coax to the tuner/balun)

I have no idea what tytpe of signals the K3 antenna tuner wants to
and from the K3. I don't care if it's not rs-232, most CPU I/O signals
can be buffered and balanced and sent a long ways.

Maybe when that manual appears we can look at this.

that is just driving the pass transistors.

One of those AH-HA moments. I noticed the battery indicator had appeared on my

But, nowunder full load (about 15 Amps) it drops to 12.1 volts...a drop of
1.70 voltswhich means the voltage regulation percent is 14 %. I don't know
if that is bad or good. I might have a Pass Transistor gone...it has two. Any
one venture and opinion? On my RS-12A at 10 amps, I am dropping just .05 volts
for a percentage of less that 1%

I think I need some 3055 or something like that.

2007-08-26 Thread Robert
It seems that you are not getting the required voltage to the pass
transistors to cause them to adjust enough. i.e. Too much drive voltage
coming from the regulator.
This means the control voltage from the regulator is still too high.

That is where I would look.

Lee,

The pass transistors *could* be to blame, but check all the connections
both inside and outside the power supply before drawing a conclusion
that the pass transistors are at fault. At 15 amps it only takes 0.1
ohm resistance to drop 1.5 volts. It is a good idea to re-tighten all
the hardware in the PS.

Re: [Elecraft] FS: KFL1-2

2007-08-26 Thread Scott Richardson

Price reduced. Now $55.

Scott

For sale: KFL1-2 + K1B30

K1 2-band filter board for 80 and 20 meters, plus 30m parts.

K1 #139 started out as a 30/20 transceiver, but became 40/30/20/15 when
the KFL1-4 came out. I replaced 30m with 80m on the old board, but lack an
80m antenna so never used it.

The filter board and spare parts have been in a drawer for years and I've
decided not to store them any longer. Give your K1 2 new bands. Several of
these boards are on 160m (see archive).

New, unbuilt price from Elecraft = $65 + $7.50 + shipping =~$75

I'll sell postpaid to a US address for $65.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for August 26th 27th, 2007

2007-08-26 Thread Kevin Rock

Good Evening,
Yeowch! By the end of the 40 meter net my head was starting to hurt.
I just spent a few minutes on the deck listening to the trees and watching
it get dark. I reported S7 noise which is very unusual considering those
storms are very far to my east. Hopefully I heard you calling but there
were a lot of stations on the air which were not very strong.

My headache is not going away. I think I will cut this short and get
to bed so I can get up for work early tomorrow. I am not sure if I dug
deep enough for all the information. It may still be in my notes but was
not readily available on the first search. I'll see if I can find some
time tomorrow to get some of the blanks filled in.

Until next week stay well and out of the way of tornados!

Kevin. KD5ONS (Net Control Operator 5th Class)
