[Elecraft] K3s and Joe T. Garcia's

2008-01-25 Thread Tom Childers, N5GE
Y'all,

In Ft. Worth, TX there is an excellent Mexican restaurant named Joe T. Garcia's
with the best fajitas, enchilada dinners and margaritas on the planet Earth.
People stand in (block long) lines to get in because they know that when they
get their table they will receive the best Mexican food, drink and service they
can get in the world. On nights when the line is really long, and people give up
waiting and leave, those left in line will clap their hands and celebrate,
because they know the line and the wait just got shorter.

I look at my wait for my K3 as though I were waiting in line at Joe T's. I know
that although Elecraft doesn't come through the line taking margarita orders
while I wait, when I get my K3, I will get the best available XCVR in the world.

By the way if you find yourself in Ft Worth and visit Joe T's, be sure to bring
your check book or cash. Joe T's doesn't accept credit cards.

73 to all...

Yes there is. Every time some one cancels their order, my order gets closer to
the door. I'd like to thank Brett and all the others who cancelled their orders
for moving me up one more position in the queue.

[Elecraft] K2 #6358 Alignment and Test Part 1

2008-01-25 Thread Tony Parker

K2 #6358 just passed all the steps in Alignment and Test Part 1.

No smoke was released and after a brief detour to figure out why
segment 10 of the s-meter wouldn't light (pin 1 of the led array
wasn't soldered!) all tests passed.

Missing pin 1 was a real shock to me since I triple checked my
soldering. Also, I haven't been working when I am tired and haven't
worked more than about 2 hours (with breaks) at any one sitting.

I guess Don's advice to:
1. Check your soldering
2. Check your soldering
3. Check your soldering

wasn't enough for me. It took 4 times!

[Elecraft] Cover for K2

2008-01-25 Thread bill KE5KWE

I just received my cover, ordered from Rose and Ken Kopp and want to let
everyone know that not only was it beautifully constructed but it fits "like
a glove". I especially like the way the back is made to go over cables,
etc. since it sits in a permanent spot on my desk. My xyl appreciates that
it was made in the colors of our Trailer. Tnx for a beautiful product and
for the quick delivery of same.

Initial reaction was, who cares. Then I thought, well, maybe there is
something to learn here.

I said to myself, "Why the post that he had canceled his order?", the
second post like this, if I recall.

A - just wanted to blow off some steam, and tell people what he
thinks. Great, all for it, been there myself.

B - express his thoughts, and hope to convince others to do the same.
H, tough crowd for this one. But who can tell.

C - trying to justify to himself, why he canceled the order. This
falls into the category of, "things that make me go hm."

Interesting stuff. I don't agree, but that is the beauty of it.
Especially when every NCJ I pick up, has at least one article in it,
where the subject talks about their station setup, and it starts with,
"A modified rig here" meaning
that these "delivery as soon as you order them" rigs, then had to be
modified, to make them useful contest rigs.

Issue 1: The K3 and selected accessories are not available as
promised. Yes, "bumps in the road" happen. Understood.

Issue 2: Elecraft has consistently and apparently with forethought
knowingly kept their customers (both perspective and paying) in the
dark about the status of the K3. Additionally, it appears that
t>hey've misrepresented the actual development status of the K3, the
KRX3 and the KDVR3. The details have been discussed many times
before, and it should be obvious to anyone.

[Elecraft] Off Topic Use IC746PRO for a K3 Panadaptor

2008-01-25 Thread Kenneth A. Christiansen

My K3 which I ordered June 13th should be coming soon.
My present rigs are K2/100 SN 1031 and an IC-746PRO. I plan to keep both
of them as the K2 is great for my camping and I have it set up for my
XYL WD0EWM in her new shack. The IC-746PRO is my 2 meter all mode
station and will be a backup the new K3. The IC-746PRO has a SCP
(Panadaptor) feature with 2 modes of operation. It is not as good as
the IC756PRO3 but I still find it works well. My question is this. I
have the KXV3 option ordered for the K3 and I would like to use the
IC-746PRO in the SCP mode as a panadaptor. It will tune the 8.215 IF but
at this point I have two problems. Does the level from the K3 need to be
padded down for the IC-746PRO and if so how much? The other problem is
how can I make sure I never accidentally transmit RF back into the K3
from the IC-746PRO as it does not have a receive only antenna jack.
Thanks in advance for your help. I know there are many good ideas out
there you can share with me.

73 for now

Many years ago I put nylon washers from the local hardware store under
the pot knobs on my K2. It stopped the wobble, gave them a more solid
feel, and hopefully extended their life. I did replace one pot and it
seems that Elecraft is using better pots now -- at least they wiggle
less -- than the ones in my K2 no. 709. But the nylon washers can't hurt.

Good to hear you didn't change the encoder unnecessarily, Dave!

I often hesitate to say something, recalling all the times I've carefully
"fixed" something only to hear later that there was a much
simpler/quicker/cheaper way to accomplish the same thing .

Even though I write many of the Elecraft assembly manuals, I never write

-Original Message-

First of all, apologies for the lng lines in my earlier post. I wrote
the item using a wordprocessor then cut and
pasted it into an email window.

Thanks for the suggestions from Ron, Tom and Steve re. the felt washer
fibres, but it was absolutely and definitely
NOT that.

The original encoder was so stiff the felt washer wasn't put to use and the
first thing I checked was where the shaft
rotated in the body. I've built other K2's and the encoder in mine was far
stiffer to rotate, straight out of the bag, than the others. I fitted it
and used it in the hope that it would free up after a while but it didn't.

Neal mailed me off-list to ask what RTFM meant. It's such a common
expression here in the UK, that it
didn't occur to me that it might be unknown elsewhere. Its approximate
translation, although other words are
sometimes substituted for the one starting with "f", is "Read the flipping
manual". YMMV.

Right, yes I see that now, in fact, it drifts out
quite a lot if you don't
change band. Since I posted, and had left it on one
band, it had drifted 30
seconds in 1 hour.

item using a wordprocessor then cut and
pasted it into an email window.

Thanks for the suggestions from Ron, Tom and Steve re. the felt washer fibres,
but it was absolutely and definitely
NOT that.

The original encoder was so stiff the felt washer wasn't put to use and the
first thing I checked was where the shaft
rotated in the body. I've built other K2's and the encoder in mine was far
stiffer to rotate, straight out of the bag,
than the others. I fitted it and used it in the hope that it would free up
after a while but it didn't.

Neal mailed me off-list to ask what RTFM meant. It's such a common expression
here in the UK, that it
didn't occur to me that it might be unknown elsewhere. Its approximate
translation, although other words are
sometimes substituted for the one starting with "f", is "Read the flipping
manual". YMMV.

Thanks for everyone's comments. The Black Widow seems like a great deal
so I ordered one. I have collection of keys none of which I'm very
happy with. Most are on ebay right now and not getting much attention.
I hope to end up with a nice, light compact key with good action and
heavy one that stays put. If the Black Widow doesn't give me the feel I
want then I'm going to try a Kent or an Elecraft HexKey. I hate to
invest that much since I don't work that much cw anymore. I'm finding it
hard to make good contacts at my leisurely 15 wpm. And what is up with
these ops sending code with about a millisecond between their dots and
dashes? Is that a kind of "I'll work you if you can copy me" attitude? I
don't get these highly stylized sending patterns. Is it meant to
intentionally make it hard to copy?

Right, yes I see that now, in fact, it drifts out quite a lot if you don't
change band. Since I posted, and had left it on one band, it had drifted 30
seconds in 1 hour.

Yes, that's what I did - 4 secs for an RTC is not good. Are you positive it
reads time on power up? I'll run more tests over the next few days.
I'm using NTP to get time and setting my clock to that (with someone reading
the time as I set it, so good to within a second). I have just set it, lets
see what it is around this time tommorrow.

Thanks for the explanation.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 RTC - Battery and more - software and RTC chip time.

2008-01-25 Thread Arnie Grubbs

Hello David,

Let me try to clear up what I was trying to say..

This is what I think is happening:
The radio has a Real Time Clock chip that keeps track of the
time when the radio is powered off. From what I see, the
radio will 'read' that chip to find out what the time is when it powers up.

After that, it looks like the radio "keeps time" all by itself using internal
software routines...
This is is what I gather from watching the time while messing
with the radio. It seems that it does not look at the real time clock chip
again,
UNLESS you change bands, or power off and on again. Then it looks like it
reloads the software clock from the real time clock chip.

This can be seen by the clock display on the radio
"catching up" to the correct time in the RTC when I change bands.
My radio time display will at that instance, jump a number of seconds (or min.)
and will
be back "on correct time" again, until it slowly drifts off again.

---
> My K3 clock, which I set about 18 hrs ago and the rig has been off for about
> the last 12 of those, has lost about 4 seconds.

>From what I read of your statement, you let it sit for 12 hour powered down
and then turned it back on. IF that is what you did, it read the RTC chip time
at
power up, and thats what you were seeing on the display. So the battery backed
up time
chip was only off 4 seconds in 18 hours. Thats probably different than what you
would
see if you had left the radio run, and didn't change the band you were
listening to.

IF you were to just let the radio sit for 12 hours powered up, say, listening
to a time
standard broadcast, and then come back and compare at the end of the period to
the
broadcast, I bet you would see a larger time difference. On mine, I see a
difference
after only a few min. When I change bands, the radio corrects the time
display by
reading from the RTC chip again... as it will jump many seconds in an instant.

Hope that helps to try to explain what I see going on with my radio.

So I don't believe this rig is picking up time signals from anywhere?

Someone put me right here if I've got this wrong?

My K3 clock, which I set about 18 hrs ago and the rig has been off for about
the last 12 of those, has lost about 4 seconds.

Now I don't think that's particularly good, even if its based on simple
electronics with no kind of sync with network etc.

I presume Eric or Wayne will see this post sometime and so they will be
aware, but I'm not about to worry them or me about it right now, they have

[Elecraft] Future Personal\Club\Dealer Poject ..Possibly..?

2008-01-25 Thread Andy - GM0NWI

Guy's..

Whilst sittin' here lookin' out the warm n cozy shack window, at the
absolutely atrocious weather we are having here in Stirling,
"Bonnie Scotland"...

I came across a recent present, sort of... an empty "Cadburys" biscuit tin
that a relative had left me to "do anything with" over
The festive season...you know that kind I'm sure.. The big square tin boxes
that hold multi-compartments with a range of ones favourite
Assorted biscuits and confectionaries... This one is a nice deep dark
purple color with hardly any markings cept for the 4 sides
Where the makers emblem is painted... No raised ridges etc with embossed
lettering or anything of that ilk...

Well.. it kinda got me thinkin... I for one for more years than I care to
remember have yearned after skill and possibly someones
Guidance\Companionship to construct either an authentic or revised
up-to-date "Paraset" WWII radio - as used by our very own S.O.E
Men and woman in the field of conflict during the hostilities...

There are so many people on this list, of varying "vintages" shall we say
(not wanting to offend anyone you see of course)..with
Varying degrees of knowledge, enthusiasm, experience... ALL with the SAME
degree of enthusiasm, some of us just need to be guided,
Prodded, pushed, shoved in the right direction..!

Is'nt that what Ham Radio AND QRP is all about..??

Wouldn't this tinif someone had the know how, be a great donor for such
a project..!? I am and probably will be for the rest of
My ham career "feeling my way" as regards the giant footsteps of "Homebrew",
but no-doubt there are others out there who could
Envisage this.. I've looked for many a year at the various sites on the net,
that describe the folks who have courageously delved right
In to undertake such projects - For me tho, I think this could be a long way
off..

Would any of the well known and respected small kit-suppliers amongst us,
ever consider updating (if possible) the circuit of these
Historic, nostalgic radio's..? I personally don't know where to start !
but if someone had the know-how or could possibly get together
With some like minded people putting their combined knowledge together, I'm
sure with the past years releases in the QRP Fraternity that we have seen
from folks around these parts ...That a revised edition just might be
possible..

Then folks like me, would have an REAL good excuse to have something to
build into that leftover Christmas biscuit tin.. sittin there
Just cryin' out to be cannablised.. or is it vandalised..!! Oh ! Heck..you
know what I mean...

Please take it away guy's, give the list your thoughts, desires, loves needs
on this...and anything else you care to SHARE with us ...
Remember "Knowledge Is Power"...just because we choose not to use a lot of
it (think about it..!) ..does'nt mean we don't have it..!

Just a thought..
