Re: [Elecraft] K3: Is it wrong?

2008-06-11 Thread Peter G3MLO

Having had my K3 for about 2 weeks now I have been
listening to the bands more than operating.
During this time I have found groups chatting and often
I seem to be able to copy everyone where as others in the net struggle.
I have done A - B comparisons between my K3 and
my Orion 1, the K3 has cleaner recovered audio
than the Orion and under extreme conditions always
comes out on top. Thanks Elecraft for a super Receiver
Peter G3MLO.
BTW nothing wrong with a 5/1 report

[Elecraft] XV432 - users' comments

2008-06-11 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Group.

In response to my earlier email asking for the above, I have received one reply
so far.

Anyway, my second K3 has already been shipped so that it is now no point to
place an order for xv432 in order to save shipping costs.

Thanks for your time in reading my post.

[Elecraft] K3: Is it wrong?

2008-06-11 Thread Dave G4AON
With later firmware versions the K3 has a very accurate S-Meter -
especially when calibrated using a commercial grade signal generator. So
giving a report on what the S-Meter indicates is something you can do
with confidence! How often have we smiled when hearing your signal is
only S3 but you sound like an S9, to I am giving you a 59 report...

Re: [Elecraft] k3/psk on laptop

2008-06-11 Thread Simon Brown (HB9DRV)
Limiting factors - well first you should try a side-by-side comparison of
the average internal laptop soundcard and a high-end solution.

With poor soundcards you get:

* Reduced dynamic range, (weak signals will be lost)
* Intermodulation.

You are limiting a very good RX by using a poor soundcard. Good soundcards
will meet the K3's RX dynamic range spec more-or-less and deliver a faithful
signal to your software. Until you try good, bad and ugly side-by-side you
don't know what you are missing.

Also - how do you know that you have not suffered degraded performance
unless you compare two cards?

Using old laptops / soundcards with the K3 is like using a Ferrari 360 with
$30 tires.

This has not been my experience with RTTY and PSK31 on two K3s for nearly
a

year now. I've only used the internal sound card on laptops and old
desktops with no degradation in performance for all my digital operations.

Bit more (Plug)

If you're a keen digital modes guy reward yourself and your K3 with a
quality product such as USInterface.com Navigator (I have one) or a product
from Microham http://www.microham-usa.com/index.html .

This is not snake oil, it really makes sense. And clears up lots of cables
from the installation.

FWIW I use a USInterface Navigator with my K3 and TS-2000, a Edirol FA-66
with my TS-480SAT.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Is it wrong?

2008-06-11 Thread David Yarnes
I think I disagree that a 5/1 report is appropriate. But I suppose this is
a matter of interpretation. Strength 1 is intended to convey that the
signal is barely perceptible. A signal that is truly that weak should not
equate to one that is readability 5 in my view. Loosely translated, it
means to me that I can tell you are there, but that's it! It is an
absolutely de minimis signal strength report. I don't even think a
readability 4 would be appropriate in combination with a strength 1
report, since that means you can copy with almost no difficulty. The
highest readability report I consider possibly appropriate with a strength
1 report would be perhaps a 3, or readable with considerable
difficulty. But I still think that's a stretch, since a strength 1
signal should really convey that the signal is so weak that nothing
significant can really be interpreted from it. If you are able to copy
anything from the other station, a strength 2 report should be the lowest
report given. A 1 report for either readability or strength should mean
that there is no communication occuring. I know some will disagree with
this, and the RST matrix is open to considerable interpretation. But if you
think about it, it only makes sense that the matrix would provide a range of
report options all the way from I copy you perfectly, to I can't copy you
at all. The latter conveyence can be for either a lack of signal strength,
or a readability problem (due to QRM, QRN, etc.), or both. Also, I think
(intuitively perhaps) there is intended to be some correlation between
readability and strength reports on the RST scale. A readability 1 report
clearly states that you are unreadable. Accordingly, I would assume that
a strength 1 report is intended to convey that signal strength is so low
as to preclude any significant degree of readability. In other words, real
communications only occurs at the 2 level for both reports.

[Elecraft] K3 Computer Interface

2008-06-11 Thread Don Rasmussen
Eventually N8LP will publish LP-Bridge which will
allow PowerSDR to directly control the K3.

Thanks Bill,

I have an LP-PAN coming.

Assuming LP_Bridge comes along to allow PowerDSR to
control K3 - is there some great benefit over HRD?

Any benefit?

I have used PowerSDR a small amount with softrock and
then switched over to Rocky.

Also, I just read my QST last night, it has a review
on Flex 5000.

Read the ending paragraphs is Flex for you?

It indicates that association with the PC is mandatory
from the start and if you enjoy such things,
Flex could be your Nirvana.

K3 allows me to have a base radio, and then address
the computer association later,
if I want, and to the extent of my interest. It's also
instant on.

I consider these pluses, Ymmv, etc... ;-)

HRD is primarily rig control and PowerSDR is a DSP
program for SDRs. WU2X
wrote a version of PowerSDR-IF that will operate on
the K3's IF via LP-PAN.
However it requires HRD for rig control, so you
actually run both
simultaneously. Eventually N8LP will publish
LP-Bridge which will allow
PowerSDR to directly control the K3.

http://www.wu2x.com/sdr.html

For background on the LP-PAN:

http://www.telepostinc.com/LP-PAN.html

To run any of the SDR programs (PowerSDR, CW Skimmer,
Winrad) on the K3, you
need the following:

KXV3 LP-PAN Sound Card Computer DSP software.

The specifics of the sound card and computer required
vary depending on the
speed and resolution needed.

I have (US Navigator) and there was no difference. Maybe the internal sound
cards I've used are good enough compared to ones you've seen. Also, my
only experience is with the RTTY (200-300 Hz filtering) and a limited amount
of PSK31.
