Hi Ron,
Thanks very much for the response, just seemed a little odd seeing the holes
and then no sign of them in any of the online pic's and so on.

Those holes are for mounting the new K144XV option. You should have
 received
three 6/32 1/4 black flat head screws, three 6/32 nuts and three #6 lock
washers to put in them to fill them up.

[Elecraft] DSP Board Exchange K3

2009-11-30 Thread N1JM

Anyone done this yet and what do you think?

K3DSPUPGDSwap out upgrade of your Pre-Rev C DSP boards to a DSP board
modified to Rev C. Ships beginning approximately 11/16/2009. Note: your old
K3 DSP board must be returned within 2-3 weeks of receipt of the upgrade to

Re: [Elecraft] Noise reduction setting suggestion for CW

2009-11-30 Thread Greg - AB7R
Thanks for the explanation Lyle...that's exactly right. Though I hesitated to
use
the term, it actually acts like an APF for CW...at least with my settings it
does.
Pitch is set at 550 Hz and using DSP 5-2 and the context filter on.

On Sun Nov 29 21:07 , Lyle Johnson sent:

I remember reading a comment from Lyle on the reflector. He said that the
first four NR selections are optimized for CW and the last 4 are optimized
for SSB. This happened a few months ago when 5 through 8 were added.

The primary reason for this is that the delay through the denoiser
filter is not deterministic. Selections 5-8 do a wet and dry mix of
processed and unprocessed audio. This can result in scalloping of the
signal amplitude, so the user's CW pitch may end up being emphasized --
or severely attenuated -- depending on the pitch, mixing setting, and
the amount of noise being suppressed.

It may well be that Greg's preferred pitch is one that gets mildly
emphasized through this action with the setting he uses.

Lyle KK7P

[Elecraft] [K3] Minor XIT/RIT display glitch with band change by RS232

This happens using N1MM logger V9.10.3 and K3 V3.6.3. I don't have any
serial snooper tools handy so I can't give the exact RS232 command sequence,
but it appears as if N1MM tries to turn off RIT/XIT on band change. To
reproduce:

Go to a band and turn RIT or XIT on. You'll see the annunciator on the LCD,
and one of the three LEDs by the knob will be lit. Now using the software
change to an adjacent band with ctrl-PgUp/PgDn and change back. The
annunciator will be off but the LED will still be lit. I think XIT/RIT is

[Elecraft] K2 Denoiser

2009-11-30 Thread n0jrn
Is there a way to change the center freq of the denoiser ??

I have my filters centered on 625 Hz and the denoiser appears to favor 700
to 710 Hz when viewing on Spectrogram.

Makes me have to run RIT to pick out the weak signals with the denoiser on.
Wondered if I could shift the center freq so it compliments the pitch
setting in my filters.

Thanks and 72: JerryN0JRN

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Minor XIT/RIT display glitch with band change byRS232

2009-11-30 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

Snooping on N1MM Logger and the K3, N1MM Logger does not
issue any command to directly turn off RIT when changing
bands (Ctrl-PgUp/Ctrl-PgDn). Using the Ctrl-pg commands
results in only one FA; or FB; command based on the last
used frequency on the next band.

It appears as if the K3 is not heeding the SPLT SV setting
(for RIT ad XIT only) if the band changes in response to an
FA; or FB; command. I can duplicate the behavior using a
terminal program equivalent to the Command Tester in the
K3 Utility.

Further, when the band changes one time, the RIT/XIT offset
is retained, a second band change will clear the offset.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 in the CQWW contest

2009-11-30 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

Received an e-mail from an EU MM group who tried the K3
for the first time this weekend along side the typical
mix of FT-1000MP, MK V, 2000 radios (many with Inrad
roofing filters and W8JI NB mods). Operators were mixed
when it came to receiving a single signal on a quiet band
- those who preferred other radios felt the K3 was too
noisy. However, when it came t dealing with QRM and a
busy band, the K3 was the unanimous choice.

I'm sure that once they get used to the K3 and learn to
set-up the AGC characteristics (slope/threshold) for their
own taste and conditions. the former world class radios
will be a thing of the past.

[Elecraft] Audio blast from the past

2009-11-30 Thread Merv Schweigert
Just had one of the audio blasts from the past so to speak,
Using the latest 3.63,
was changing modes from RTTY to CW and as soon as
I pressed the Mode switch and the K3 went into full audio
loud screech. Happy it was on speaker and not headphones
as it was eardrum busting. Hitting the mode switch again
did nothing at first, pressed it again and it stopped.
Of course I cannot get it to repeat.

Also notice that I have a dead spot while tuning the shift
control. If the width is set to .05 and tuning the width control
to center a signal in the passband, when I tune through .63
the receiver goes almost dead, one click either way, IE: .64
or .62 and all is back to normal. Changed between IIR and FIR
and same results at .63 shift. It may be at other widths also just
not as noticable.

Another one that may have always been there and I never noticed ,
when engaging the NB control the signals drop noticably, my settings
are T1-4 and IF Narrow -4 when I press NB to remove power line
noise the signal also drops in strength, as I say that may be normal
and I have not noticed it before.

[Elecraft] K2 Side tone not working

2009-11-30 Thread Dave Barr
The side tone on my K2 (sn 537) has stopped working... not a peep.
Also, the spot function is not audible.I have checked the
St L (set at 50) and run it all the way up... no side tone. CW is
operating properly, internal keyer or externally. Does anyone recognize
this problem, or do I just go in and check voltage levels?

Thanks, and 73

Re: [Elecraft] K3 in the CQWW contest

2009-11-30 Thread David Gilbert

I had the same thing happen several times. I'd call QRL? on what for me
was a totally open frequency and get a RR reply from someone way off
the side that I could only hear by virtue of their bad key clicks. One
guy was a full 500 Hz away and he still thought I'd be bothering him.

The narrow capability has another downside, though. A few times I'd be
calling CQ on a perfectly clear frequency without getting many replies
even though I knew the band was open. So I'd check either side of me
and discover an S9+20 station 200 Hz away that I didn't even know was
there, and potential callers with wider filters were having trouble
separating us.

I was using the 250 Hz 8-pole filter with the DSP set to 200 Hz and it
worked fantastic, but until everyone else buys a K3 (or at least fixes
their damn key clicks) I'll probably not be able to get maximum benefit
of it.

[Elecraft] USB Sound Card for digital modes.

2009-11-30 Thread Kenneth A. Christiansen
Rich told me he was having trouble sending this to the reflector but it is
such valuable advice and works so well I want to share it with the group.
I find even the DUPE warnings now come on the main computer speaker even

so that is working well and my water fall looks just perfect like I have
not seen since back when I ran Windows 98 Second Edition. Thanks again to
everyone that helped me. I hope to work you in some of the upcoming

In windows Vista and 7, I set the main sound card as the default soundcard.
It can also be done in XP but is a PITA. Then in HRD or MIXW2, select the
correct sound device. With Vista you are stuck with the volume settings you
had as only the default sound card volume sliders show up, but I found this
workable. To change in Vista you need to make the sound card for the rig
default to change volume settings, they will not link to mix unless default,
(I set mine for mid range and then did the rest from the rig) Once you get
the proper volume setting make the main sound card default and all should
work (don't forget to reset the settings in MixW if changed.) I did not
have to do this with Windows 7, as the slider is visible for all sound
devices.

Make sure that the sound card for the rig is not set as the default Sound
card. It appears to me that Windows 7 can have two (or more?) default sound
cards. This can be done from control panel/sound/... I do not recall this
in Vista or XP. MIXW and HRD will see the sound card even though it is not
default, but you must select it manually as it will go the default
otherwise. Only need to do this once unless you change cards. For MIXW go
to Configure/Sound device settings, then select the correct soundcard in the
top three windows. HRD can be changed similarly.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Side tone not working

2009-11-30 Thread Don Wilhelm
Dave,

The nasty accidentally changed the sidetone source gremlin has crept
into your K2 while you were changing something else in the menu..
To chase it out, first lower that St L menu parameter to something more
reasonable (like 15 to 20) or whatever your normal setting was.
Then enter the menu for St P, hold EDIT to edit the parameter - now tap
DISPLAY to toggle the sidetone source. Stop when you hear sidetone and
exit the menu.

The details of this 'gremlin' --
If you have an older K2 that has not had the hardware sidetone source
change installed (must be added when the KPA100 or KIO2 are installed),
then your sidetone source is U6-25. K2s greater than SN 3000 and those
that have the sidetone source hardware change must use U8-4. The latest
firmware level 2.04R does not allow the U6-25 selection and all the K2s
below SN 3000 must have the hardware wiring change installed.

This has been a perpetual support 'problem' - how about if everyone
upgrades the firmware to 2.04R and make this one go away :-) (Just kidding)

Re: [Elecraft] K3 in the CQWW contest

2009-11-30 Thread Brendan Minish
I ran my K3 in the Contest and managed to achieve a claimed score of
1,917,035 in the single operator High power all bands, assisted
category. I operated for around 32 Hours and foolishly slept though the
Saturday morning greyline after staying up too late at the start of the
contest.
This is by far my best result to date in the CQWW CW contest and I found
the K3's performance outstanding.

antennas here are, Inverted L (160m), 80m Inverted V Dipole, 40M-10M M2
7-10-30 Log Yagi (. 2x ~150m long reversible beverages for receive. I
use an Acom 1000 Amp

I used the K3 in diversity mode nearly all all the time. It really
helped with picking out calls quickly when running, even on the bands
(20m and up) where the beverages are lacking in receive sensitivity,
diversity mode helped by creating a stereo image for the stronger
stations which in turn helped with picking out the weaker stations
underneath. It sure is good to be able to pull out JA's and VK's when
running on 80m from under a pileup of EU stations.
Once you get used to diversity CW it's hard to go back to non-diversity.

As far as the filtering goes it was fantastic. A Funny thing happened on
80m when I Picked a frequency that was clear and a few hundred Hz away
from an RA station, I did call QRL? a few times before starting my run.
He obviously felt I was a bit close to his run frequency so He spotted
me with a comment to the effect that I should listen more carefully!
Once the spot hit the cluster system I had a big run, perhaps not the
spotter's desired result ;-0

On the first night I had some power line noise on 160m on occasions and
the DSP noise blanker was able to take this out without destroying the
Receiver performance in the process.

There were some stations that had horrible Keyclicks on TX, this is not
always simply down to poor transmitters, Using Amplifier ALC, can if not
carefully set up make even the cleanest transmitter generate Clicks
and crud

[Elecraft] [K2] Question on K2 audio output

2009-11-30 Thread Tom McCulloch
I'll be getting back to PSK31 with my K2 and was wondering if there is a
place to pick up fixed audio output for input into my PC's sound card. It's

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Question on K2 audio output

2009-11-30 Thread Don Wilhelm
Tom,

Take a look at my website www.w3fpr.com - K2 Fixed Audio Output article.
I used to have kits available, and then had only boards, and then Tom
Hammond modified the board to fit between the Control Board and Front
Panel, and offered boards to do that - check www.n0ss.net to see the
documentation for that board - unfortunately, Tom has run out of boards
and does not want to continue, but will provide the board images to
anyone who would like them.

You could wire the amplifier on a piece of perfboard and it will work fine.

I guess there are about 200 K2s out there with this addition, but
interest has tapered off - you are welcome to continue the effort should
you want to order several boards - FAR circuits will make up a sheet of
the boards for you (or anyone else) for an affordable price.

Don W3FPR

Re: [Elecraft] USB Sound Card for digital modes.

2009-11-30 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

In windows Vista and 7, I set the main sound card as the
default soundcard. It can also be done in XP but is a PITA.

It is not difficult in XP:

Right click on the Speaker icon in the Taskbar
   Select Adjust Audio Properties
   Select the Audio tab
Set the default for Sound playback and click apply
Set the default for Sound recording and click apply

    Done ...

With Vista you are stuck with the volume settings you had
as only the default sound card volume sliders show up, but
 I found this workable.

Again, the information is absolutely incorrect. In Vista:

right click on the Speaker icon in the Taskbar
  Select Open Volume Mixer
Select Device in the menu bar
  Select the other soundcard

You now have mixer controls for the non-default card
being used for amateur/digital software. The mixer will
show a master volume control for the device (speakers)
and volume controls for each application that is using
the card. Each application can be set to any value from
zero to the maximum set by the master

For setting INPUT levels in Vista:

right click on the speaker icon
  select Recording Devices
double click on the desired input
  select the levels tab
adjust the level (and balance if appropriate)

In short, configuring default inputs/output and setting levels
are quite simple in either XP or Vista/Windows 7.

[Elecraft] K3 static electricity

2009-11-30 Thread Steve Ellington
What can I do to eliminate the static electricity problem with K3? Every
time I touch the main VFO (A) knob the display goes dark, audio goes off,
frequency changes among other things. After about 5 seconds it recovers but
somewhat off frequency. Just a little foot shuffling will develop enough
charge to cause this. Touching the metal on the rig will discharge things
but it's hard to remember to do this. Am I missing a ground on this VFO knob
or what? BTW...The FP is only a few months old, new version.

[Elecraft] Aliens showing Displeasure?

2009-11-30 Thread JIM DAVIS
Gentlemen,

I'm experiencing an ODD rather broad noise USUALLY on 20m @ the lower end of
the band (CW) between
14.020 up to about 14.060mhz. It's sort of a mid-pitch level GROWL that
VARIES in frequency
(traveling) up and down the aforementioned frequencies, and sometimes more
noticeable in the lower
reaches of the CW segment like around 14.030mhz. But again it does'nt stay in
one place it moves
up and down the band!!!

ANY IDEAS on what maybe causing this weird noise, and I might add it happens on
a daily-basis!
It
started occurring about 4 months ago and it's really got me scratching our
NOGGIN!!!

That's an excellent point Jim! I don't think most folks realize how close
you can get to another station with a K3 and not even know they are there!
I used to have big problems with a fellow who lives about a quarter of a
mile from me--not his fault, but he was just LOUD! Now, I don't even know
he is on the band unless I stumble right on top of him! Let me just say
that narrow roofing filters in the K3 are for real! It's a whole different
world than with previous transceivers--even the Orion!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 static electricity

2009-11-30 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
Static electricity is YOUR problem, not the K3's. If you are rubbing
your feet over a rug, spray it with static spray. Or ground yourself
on a little bit of static pad that you put there for the purpose. Do
something so you are not a lightning bolt every time you move.

You keep zapping it like that, you WILL destroy something in it. Hope
your insurance company does not read this reflector. Contributory
negligence not useful in settling claims.

Static pops are universally bad for everything electronic, not just K3's.

It is not difficult in XP:

Right click on the Speaker icon in the Taskbar
Select Adjust Audio Properties
Select the Audio tab
Set the default for Sound playback and click apply
Set the default for Sound recording and click apply

The first time I Added my extra sound card it was set as default
automatically by windows XP and even though the original sound card was
still in and active the controls for the card were not visable on either
record or playback. I no longer remember what I did to get them to showup
and to set the extra as not default, but it took several days. I do
remember playing with some not-so-obvious menu selections with advice from
a friend and avid game player that has several sound cards installed.

With Vista you are stuck with the volume settings you had
as only the default sound card volume sliders show up, but
 I found this workable.

Again, the information is absolutely incorrect. In Vista:

right click on the Speaker icon in the Taskbar
   Select Open Volume Mixer
Select Device in the menu bar
   Select the other soundcard

You now have mixer controls for the non-default card
being used for amateur/digital software. The mixer will
show a master volume control for the device (speakers)
and volume controls for each application that is using
the card. Each application can be set to any value from
zero to the maximum set by the master

For setting INPUT levels in Vista:

right click on the speaker icon
   select Recording Devices
double click on the desired input
   select the levels tab
adjust the level (and balance if appropriate)

In short, configuring default inputs/output and setting levels
are quite simple in either XP or Vista/Windows 7.

I don't know what version of Vista OR MixW2 that Joe has BUT when I click
on the Configure/Output Volume or Configure/Input Volume in or from the
MixW2 menu to adjust these -- IT does nothing. Unless I have the Windows
Defult sound card selected in MixW2. When I have made the soundcard that
MixW2 is using as not defualt it will not bring up the sliders. Yes, you
can do all the above and get to the sliders and adjuist the volume, and
that is what I told him to do. Does the same in Vista Ultimate and Home
Premium. In windows XP the Mixer is opened, either record for input or
Playback for output when you click on these. I just tried this in Windows
7 and it also appears to do the same in Windows 7 - i.e. it will not pull
up the mixer from MixW2 ( Did not try with the other soundcard as
 default.)

Rich told me he was having trouble sending this to the
reflector but it is such valuable advice and works so well I
want to share it with the group. I find even the DUPE
warnings now come on the main computer speaker even
while sending PSK31 on the USB sound card. My IMD meter reads
 -29 to -33
so that is working well and my water fall looks just perfect
like I have not seen since back when I ran Windows 98 Second
Edition. Thanks again to everyone that helped me. I hope to
work you in some of the upcoming
 contests.

In windows Vista and 7, I set the main sound card as the
default soundcard. It can also be done in XP but is a PITA.
Then in HRD or MIXW2, select the correct sound device. With
Vista you are stuck with the volume settings you had as only
the default sound card volume sliders show up, but I found
this workable. To change in Vista you need to make the sound
card for the rig default to change volume settings, they will
not link to mix unless default, (I set mine for mid range and
then did the rest from the rig) Once you get the proper
volume setting make the main sound card default and all
should work (don't forget to reset the settings in MixW if
changed.) I did not have to do this with Windows 7, as the
slider is visible for all sound devices.

Make sure that the sound card for the rig is not set as the
default Sound card. It appears to me that Windows 7 can
have two (or more?) default sound cards. This can be done
from control panel/sound/... I do not recall this in Vista
or XP. MIXW and HRD will

It sounds like a switching power supply, such as in a charger or device
power supply.
If you can do it, turn off your house breakers one at a time to see if
if it's in your house.
Try a search on rfi @ contesting.com mailing list.

ANY IDEAS on what maybe causing this weird noise, and I might add it happens
 on a daily-basis!
 It
started occurring about 4 months ago and it's really got me scratching our
 NOGGIN!!!

Don't forget touch lamps notorious sources of noise.

(I spent about 15 years chasing noise for a public utility.)
