[Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net on 14.314
I heard Roger, K7SJ (NC) on 14.314 right at 1800z at S7 here in Alaska. I waited to call him until he turned his antenna from the east coast to the SW. It still took several calls to get thru all the stronger stations to the south of him. He had to rotate north to fully copy my signal. I am using a K3/10 and 3-element beam (Hygain TH3mk4 at 50-feet). My K3/10 outputs 16w with the PWR control at maximum (measured with a Bird 43 power meter). I was pleased that my nearly QRP signal made it. Perhaps conditions skipped over Beaverton, being only a couple hundred miles distant? I heard 1's, 2's, 4's, 5's 6's and 7's checking in. -- Message: 12 Date: Sun, 09 May 2010 11:11:29 -0700 From: Phil Kane k2...@kanafi.org Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Icom net was on 14.316 todaye To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Message-ID: 4be6fad1.2000...@kanafi.org Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 On 5/9/2010 10:52 AM, Ron Midwin wrote: I tuned in at 10:00 a.m. PDT and was very excited to hear some strong stations talking on 14.316 MHz. [Elecraft] Portable Fit: K3 versus K2
Yes, the K3 is light and rugged. On the other hand, it doesn't run on a built-in battery. I did a light-weight one-person DXpedition to Bangladesh. Mains power on St Martin's Island [on the Bay of Bengal] was a generator which ran only a few hours per day. So, the built-in battery of the K2 allowed me to operate long hours, and recharge from the generator while I was asleep. The entire rig including battery chargers, key and mike fir nicely into a small hardshell case the size of a laptop bag - cabin baggage - and the Sigma 5 centre-fed vertical [which worked fb on the beach near the salt water] went into a sports bag which went as checked baggage. I used an early Sony palmtop [netbook-like] for logging. eric VA7DZ K3 3620 K2 XXX -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] KAT3 use questions
I just finished building a K3 (#4181) and have a question about using the KAT3. When I hit the ATU button with the KAT3 enabled, it does its thing for a second or two and then flashes a SWR value on the display as expected. I want to operate on 80m with a VERY limited choice of antennas. My questions are: 1) If the displayed SWR is, say, 4.1:1, does that tell me that the ATU successfully matched the load and that I can operate the radio without fear of damage? 2) What does the display indicate when it cannot achieve a reasonable match and I should not operate the radio? Thanks for any info on this. 73, Stan, KR7C __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] KAT3 use questions
Stan Gibbs wrote: When I hit the ATU button with the KAT3 enabled, it does its thing for a second or two and then flashes a SWR value on the display as expected. I want to operate on 80m with a VERY limited choice of antennas. It shows you the best match it could obtain. With really mismatched conditions, the best match may depend on where the tuner was when the tuning algorithm started. If you tap ATU again, you *may* get a better [or worse] match. Under better match conditions, this disappears and the first tap will likely get you as good as the L-network and algorithm can do. My questions are: 1) If the displayed SWR is, say, 4.1:1, does that tell me that the ATU successfully matched the load and that I can operate the radio without fear of damage? The K3 will power back if it doesn't like the match. Mine won't do full power into a 4:1 match anywhere and it complains when I try to TX. It'll do full power into a 2.5:1 on higher bands, but not so good on 80 or 160 where I get HI SWR on occasions. 2) What does the display indicate when it cannot achieve a reasonable match and I should not operate the radio? It tells you the SWR and then goes back to the freq display. When you TX, you may get HI SWR, it may dial the power back, or both. Either is an indication that you're not going to be able to transmit. The L-Network in the ATU can match a wide range of impedances but there are limits. If the best it can do is 4:1 SWR, you really need to do something to the antenna. Changing the length of the coax will change the impedance the tuner is working into and you might get a better match, but ... keep in mind that, if the feedpoint impedance at the antenna is wildly mismatched to the transmission line, the SWR on the line will be very high regardless of the length of the line, so will losses, and the ATU may not be able to completely match it to the radio. Antenna Tuners have nothing to do with the antenna. They just match the impedance seen at the coax connector to the impedance the PA wants to see [usually 50 ohms]. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2010 Cal QSO Party 2-3 Oct 2010 - www.cqp.org __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] [K2] Update on the Availability of Legacy Rework Eliminator(TM) Accessories!
Nearly five years after Ken first announced our intention to offer a PCB based K2 un-module headers kit, as of today we are no longer offering this popular aftermarket accessory. We will continue to offer our K2 Internal Mic Adaptor (IMA) kit for another year or two, depending on how quickly our inventory of circuit boards is depleted. Likewise, we will continue to maintain our website and documentation for at least that long. For the moment we are still offering most of our duplicate K2 PCB parts kits, although they will also be phased out once our current inventory is gone. Beyond enabling you to build a bare K2 so the options can be added more easily, these parts are also required to add a used option to a K2 that wasn't originally built option ready. 73, Gary KI4GGX webmaster http://www.unpcbs.com/ P.S. Henceforth, if you want to build a K2 using our option ready assembly method, we suggest you post a WTB message on the Reflector, in order to locate a used set of our option bypass headers. Re: [Elecraft] K1 LCD backlight foam etc
Greg, I assume you mean the 1/8 inch thick double adhesive strip - if so, the answer is yes, that is what holds the backlight in place. Position it properly on the first try because that double sided foam tape is difficult to remove if you do it wrong - follow the instructions precisely. In what way are you finding it difficult to solder? Just pre-tin the lead and the lead of the resistor/wire, then lay the resistor/wire next to the backlight lead and apply a bit more solder - task done. It is the pre-tinning that makes the process easy. Pre-shape the components so they lay in contact with each other before you start helps a lot too. 73, Don W3FPR ki4...@cox.net wrote: Is the LCD backlight only held to the foam pad by that 1/8 strip? [Elecraft] K3 AM TX - Questions and Observations
I have recently been experimenting with AM on the low bands using the K3. The addition of Sync AM RX makes such a difference! I have noticed on AM TX, use of compression, at any level, causes some distortion of the waveform at the zero crossing (when viewed on an oscilloscope) - not really an issue, but I wonder if anyone else has come across this? It also appears nearly impossible to exceed 100% modulation, regardless of the mic gain setting. I also have a question regarding asymetric AM modulation and the K3 - is it possible for the TX to exceed 100% positive modulation whilst maintaining less than 100% negative? Being only new to the AM mode, I am not sure if it is possible with any TX that uses low level modulation. Any info greatly appreciated. Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Update on the Availability of Legacy Rework Eliminator(TM) Accessories!
I would also like to point out that those interested in installing Gary and Ken's K2 PCB parts kits can very easily create their own un-modules on perf-board. Many of them consist of just a wire between two pins of the header - the KNB2 un-module is the most complex because it needs to be a -5 dB pad (3 resistors) - the KSB2 needs a .001 uF capacitor and the J15 header needs a 4.7 pF capacitor. Just review the K2 schematics and the information on the un-pcb website and you should be able to construct your own un-modules. I use several of these homebrew un-modules when doing repairs. The Un-PCB modules are convenient for those wanting to assemble the K2 so options can be added in the future, but I make my own in a smaller profile so I can probe greater areas of the RF Board with them installed. Most of my modules are only a bit wider than the header itself, but if your purposes are different than mine, you can vary from my methods. A note of caution - the headers for the KAF2/KDSP2 board on the K2 Control Board are not 0.10 inch center to center between the two headers - that fact makes it difficult to use regular perfboard when constructing an Un-module for these headers - the alternative is to use two bent wires across the headers. 73, Don W3FPR Gary Hvizdak wrote: Nearly five years after Ken first announced our intention to offer a PCB based K2 un-module headers kit, as of today we are no longer offering this popular aftermarket accessory.
