And has anyone noticed that the front panel indicators on the Alpha amp
shown in the recent ads seem to show 1500 watts out, with pretty close
to 2500 volts and 0.6 amps on the meters. WOW! !500 watts RF out for
1500 watts DC in. 100% efficiency!! There's a good mark for Wayne and
Eric to shoot at.

The amount of power required is a function of propagation and intended
recipient. I can't say in advance of an *event*, how much power will be
required. If 100 watts isn't cutting it on the first delivery attempt (it
usually does), I'm not fooling around with 250 watts...I'm going straight to
500 if that's how much power I have available. There is no use the minimum
amount of power requred... rules here. Rather, we use the tools we have
available and methods within our SOP to get the message handled efficiently
and accurately. MARS isn't a trial and error service.

The real question is whether or not the 10 minute duty cycle is a function
of heat or is it a timer / firmware controlled function? The first
circumstance can be managed, however if duty cycle is controlled by the
latter then it doesn't seem viable to the MARS service to me. Any insight
into this question?

 Russ,

Gary is out of town for a few days.

If your other voltages are reading OK (12 V, SWR, etc.), I would suspect a
firmware problems. (I've had to reload the MCU code on my K3 a couple
 times to fix other problems.)

I also had some trouble with a KPAIO3 board that was reading KPA3 current
way too high. Replacing the board solved that problem. In your case,
with the KPA3 removed, or power set below 12W, the K3 shouldn't even be
 looking at the KPAIO3 sensor.

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] MARS purpose (was KPA-500 FCC docs)

2011-03-16 Thread Tim Tucker
Department of Defense (DoD) Instruction 4350.02 dated 12/23/2009 changed the
mission of MARS significantly. It is now no longer a service geared toward
facilitating health and welfare traffic for military employees (which
included phone patches) because that mission is obsolete. Instead, it's
primary mission is to provide a contingency radio communications support to
the U.S. Government and civil authorities. Basically, MARS is attempting to
be THE most well trained and reliable HF emergency communications
organization available. Here is an excerpt from the DoD Instruction that
changed the MARS mission:

4. POLICY. It is DoD policy that:
a. MARS capability for contingency radio communications support to U.S.
Government operations shall be provided through the utilization of organized
volunteer radio operators and operating facilities under the appropriate
authorities, as directed by and coordinated within the Department of
Defense.
b. MARS shall provide contingency radio communications support to the DoD
Components.
c. MARS shall provide contingency radio communications support to civil
authorities at all levels, in fulfillment of DoD responsibilities under DoDD
5111.13 (Reference (d)).
d. MARS shall provide health, morale, and welfare radio communications
support to military members, civilian employees and contractors of DoD
Components, and civil agency employees and contractors, when in remote or
isolated areas, in contingencies or whenever appropriate.

An example of a recent exercise that was at a Naval base involved a scenario
where there was a terrorist attack on the base. A MARS unit was deployed to
the base to participate where they demonstrated a capability for relaying
digital SITREP messages from the base ECOM center using a notebook PC and
VHF radio to the base MARS HF station which then relayed them into the MARS
Winlink system for delivery to their intended destination out of State.
Speed, accuracy, and reliability are the important training elements.

Hope that helps some.

Tim

Hi all,

I just gave new K3 code to our field testers (see release notes
below). If you have a keen interest in one or more of the changes,
please email me and I'll get you a copy, too.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Power Gain

2011-03-16 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft
Regardless of FCC requirements, it is not feasible or desirable to
modify the KPA500 for lower power drive with a 10W exciter.

Any modification of the input network to the KPA500 will seriously
degrade the input SWR to the amplifier and also will put the KPA500
transistors at a strong risk of destruction from accidental over drive.
Our protection circuitry and firmware are tightly integrated to provide
a very reliable bullet-proof design.

Agreed and the sale of KPA3 and KPA100 will be maintained as well.

On the other hand, I would like to have stainless steel screws in KPA500 as a
standard provision.  Summer in Hong Kong is very humid.  I have already changed
all the screws in my K3 with SS so as to avoid rusting.

I'm certain you meant VE7KFM, who indeed has a long and sordid history
on the air. There are some other equally degenerate individuals on the
U.S. side of the border (seemingly equally immune to enforcement) who
sometimes pirate his callsign to generate their own malicious

anything to anyone.

Guys, he's a fruitcake. There are two little known laws in physics: 1)
Conservation of Fruitcake: All the fruitcake in the universe was
created at the Big Bang. You can neither create nor destroy it, it just
moves from home to home. 2) Applied to individuals, it is like
entropy, and they just persist and sometimes increase.

I don't check into the net, SSB is a struggle for me, but I'd just move
