Re: [Elecraft] Koss Headsets for the K3 (Was: Re: Yamaha CM500 Headset)www
Many years ago, someone on another reflector posted a cheap way to make the equivalent of a Heil Proset. Radio Shack had the Optimus PRO-50MX boom headset, which was made by Koss, on sale. The mic and its round clamshell could be replaced by a Heil HC-4 and the Heil mic holder. The received audio was said to be crisper/better than the Heil headphones. This was before the days of radios with TX EQ, so the only way to get communications quality audio was with a different mic. Now Heil doesn't sell the mic elements, though I still have spares. I did that, and it worked fine. I still have them but prefer a tighter headphone fit and usually use my Sennheiser HD 280 Pro headphones (no mic). [Elecraft] KPA-500 high gain modification?
Interesting. I have build 600W amp with four Motorola MRF150 transistors and I can easily get 600W output with 7W input. This was tested with input attenuator removed. Are those Mosfets in KPA500 that much different? I also would like to purchase the KPA500 but only if I could get 15 dB gain. It would be great to drive KPA500 with KX3 10W and get around 300W output power. I’m pretty sure that KPA500 has some form of attenuator at the input. Mark WQ7X But I would buy a second KPA500 in a heartbeat if I knew I could modify it for 10 watts drive for full output! I think you're being optimistic about full output with 10W drive. The VRF-2933 is rated for 23 dB gain (typical). With perhaps 1 dB loss in the low pass filter, a dB or so in the output transformer, roughly 3 dB in feedback to improve linearity one dB in the input transformer, bias decoupling, gate balancing, and two dB in the input matching comes very close to the roughly 15 dB gain limit in the US regulations. Some of those values are based on application notes from Motorola, MicroSemi and APT for similar MOSFET designs while some values are from Elecraft designers. In any case, the inescapable conclusion is that there is no magic modification to get the additional 2 - 3 dB of gain necessary to get 600W with 10W of driver from the KPA-500. 73, ... Re: [Elecraft] P3/Monitor
You can probably use the same monitor for your computer and a P3 SVGA board, but not at the same time. VGA and SVGA use the same connector. Typically a flat screen LCD monitor has multiple inputs, VGA (a 15-pin D-shell connector), DVI (a slightly different connector) and newer ones may also have an HDMI connector and/or a DisplayPort connector. You need a monitor that has (at least) a VGA connector. Some of the oldest monitors had only a VGA connector. Pictures of these connectors are shown in wikipedia.org articles for VGA, DVI (digital visual interface), and HDMI. I use DVI connectors from my computers (which are a few years old) to my monitor. My current monitors will also support another device attached to their VGA connectors and yet another through their HDMI connectors. You switch between them using a button on the monitor. If a particular connector is unused, my monitor cycles around to find an active connection. You should be able to connect both the P3 to the SVGA port of a reasonably modern flat screen monitor and your computer (with an appropriate video card) via DVI or HDMI and switch between them with a front panel monitor switch. There are also KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) switches that allow you to connect one set of keyboard, video, and mouse from one computer or another. If you have a monitor that supports only SVGA and have a KVM switch, that'll allow you to switch between monitors. I confess that I haven't done any of this with my P3. I've just connected it to an older small flat screen that I had around and dispensed with the switching. Flat screen monitors are quite affordable these days. My limitation is desk space. I use a 2 x 24 pair for software development work and the same pair for radio contests with a different computer connected with a dual KVM switch. The P3's monitor is separate and dedicated. When I get more room, I'll go back to dedicated pairs. There are also some newer monitors and flat-screen TV that advertise Picture in Picture capability. Use your favorite search engine for Picture in picture monitor. I haven't ever used one of these. Re: [Elecraft] P3/Monitor
Phil, If you want to see the computer and the P3 display at the same time you will need to get two monitors, one for each. If you want to switch between them, you can do that *IF* the computer is DVI or HDMI capable. The P3SVGA is VGA capable, so you would connect both and switch back and forth by using the monitor controls. An 'augmentation' (and what I plan to do) is the use of a newer HDTV as a monitor. This allows a third function in the shack (TV, at slightly more cost than an equally sized monitor) but one has to get the HDTV with PIP (using the VGA input) so you can see both 'the game' and the P3 at the same time. By the time the new station is built, it will also be 'the man cave'. 73, Rick WA6NHC -Original Message- From: Phil LaMarche I have an SVGA on order. Advice please, not being a computer expert. Re: [Elecraft] K3 and battey usage
Hi Van - I've been running my K3 almost exclusively like that almost from day one (two years), although I do have a tad more amp-hours available than you'd need for two hours per day of operating. Here is what my system consists of: (1) GE 72-watt solar panel about 20 feet from the shack, connected via #8 copper wire (1) Morningstar Prostar PS15m charge controller (3) Sun-Extender PVX-1080T AGM batteries, in parallel (1) N8XJK Boost Regulator (1) Rig Runner 4008 12VDC Power Distribution unit The charge controller, batteries, boost regulator, and Rig Runner are in the shack, about three feet from the K3. With this setup I am able to run my K3 at 100 watts for a long time. I do mostly casual operating / rag chewing, 160 - 10 meters, but occasionally do get into all-weekend contests, as I'm trying to finish off 5BWAS before time finishes me off! I do very little SSB and no data modes, so my CW-only operating adds to the amount of time the batteries will last. The K3 will run on 12 volts, but I wanted to keep it supplied with 13.8, no matter what the battery levels were at, thus the use of a boost regulator. I believe that MFJ also markets one - I deduced that the N8XJX model was the best fit for me. I also have their RM-1 remote meter and power switch connected to it. I have that boost regulator in the line BEOFRE the rig runner unit, so anything I plug into the rig runner is powered by 13.8 volts, NOT whatever the battery level is currently sitting at. And I do have several other pieces of gear connected to it, including an Icom IC-207H VHF/UHF rig and a 12v station lamp. Having the rig runner installed is nice because I can connect other stuff to it as needed. I occasionally hook up my MFJ-259B antenna analyzer, KX1, etc. - all get a nice, regulated 13.8 volts. One of the reasons why I've got so much capacity is that this part of California can go several days without sun. I never want to get to the point where I have to worry about not operating because I've depleted my amps. Just isn't an issue with three of those buggers hooked to the system. But it wasn't cheap! As a side note, a few months ago I built a KPA-500 amp. It runs off the house mains, but with the drive level only 25 watts for full power out, the K3's current draw on that battery bank is a LOT less than if running at 100 watts! So, if I want QRO operation at 500 watts, I still need the electric utility. But for 100 watts and less, I am self-sufficient. Hope that helps. 73, Jim / W6JHB On Thursday, Mar 15, 2012, at Thursday, 8:07 PM, van wrote: Anyone using the K3 with an auto size deep cell 12 volt battery with 60 watt solar charge system. Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 high gain modification?
Removing this part of the circuit will definitely void the warranty. It is part of both the input overdrive protection for the amp and also stabilizes the input SWR as seen by the driving radio. It's also important for amplifier stability. We also check for excessive gain in the amplifier's protection firmware. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 ACC2 description
Hi Mart, you could just connect the last sequencer port (RIG RX/TX) to the PTT input on the microphone connector, too, saving the GPIO for other functions. Even simplier will probably be to use the GPIO's TX-INHIBIT function (can be selected by the menu then). That will ensure although PTT/CW is pressed the KX3 will not put out any power until unlocked from the sequencer. Advantage is you can connect all directly to the KX3, i.e. mic and CW key, use the PTT-OUT from the KX3 to trigger the sequencer and that's it. Works ufb on my K3 (same logic; contact me directly if you need more info, don't have schematics, PCB layout, etc. on my website yet). So no need to route the mic and key through the sequencer first making wiring a lot easier and being able to also use the K3's and KX3's internal voice cw keyer. :-)) Vy 73, Olli - DH8BQA http://www.dh8bqa.de - Original Message - From: Mart Tagasaar mart.tagas...@gmail.com To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Friday, March 16, 2012 3:38 PM Subject: [Elecraft] KX3 ACC2 description Hi Don, Is it possible to program GPIO pin to be a standard PTT INPUT ( GND to XMIT mode) ? Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 high gain modification?
Hi Geoff, sure, could be an alternative. The appeal of NOT needing it would be less clutter, i.e. not an additional box that needs to be transported, wired, subject to failure, etc. Just imagine going to an expedition with just a KX3 and KPA500 for a very small but effective powerful station ... couldn't be easier than that. ;-)) That was what I was thinking about ... For the K3 there probably is the money factor for quite some people, too, as it would save the cost for the internal 100 W PA (no problem here, needed it for my tube amp anyway as it requires 50-60 W drive). Needing a driver amp (i.e. from 5/10 to 35/40 W) will add significant cost again for those not into homebrewing (and to a lesser extend to those homebrewing, too). Just taking the KPA3 is then probably the better solution again as it also adds better system integration compared to an additional driver amp between a K3/10 and the KPA500. But I can well understand the K3/10 users' desires, too. ;-)) 73, Olli - DH8BQA - Original Message - From: Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy lx...@pt.lu To: Oliver Dröse dro...@necg.de Cc: Elecraft Discussion List elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Friday, March 16, 2012 5:09 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 high gain modification? Re: [Elecraft] Hook Up Directions for KX3 and HRD
John, For connecting ANY radio to HRD (or any other application) for rig control, You connect the computer serial port TXD to the RXD pin on the radio, and the RXD of the port to the TXD pin on the radio. Those are pins 2 and 3. You also must connect RS-232 Signal Ground which is pin 5. That will get you operational with any (and all) rig control applications, not just HRD. Now then, if you were asking about DM780 (for digital modes), the answer is extended - you must provide a path between headphone out of the radio to the computer line in soundcard jack - isolation of the grounds between the radio and the computer may be necessary for noise (hum) free operation. For audio going the other way, the line out on the computer connects to mic in on the radio, but through an isolation transformer and an attenuator to reduce the level by about 10 times - line level will overdrive the mic input without the attenuator inserted in the path - a series 100k resistor and a parallel 10k resistor (on the KX3 side of the 100k) will produce a usable attenuator. Of course, these things are what is done in the digital interfaces available from several different sources. I have spoken in generalities about what those interfaces consist of - you can homebrew your own or purchase one of the various brands that suits your operation. 73, Don W3FPR On 3/16/2012 5:54 PM, John Lally wrote: What are the connections and instructions for interfacing Ham Radio Deluxe and the KX3? Last weekend I discovered the AF knob for the sub RX on my K3 was broken in half. I don't have the sub so I don't use that knob. Just a failure. I e mailed Elecraft two days ago I got 2 sets of replacement knobs. Can't beat that. Re: [Elecraft] P3 Display Anomaly
Well, after several very informative replies to my post, I've come to the determination that I'm not the only one seeing these Flying Fribbles, Moving Humps, Sweepers, Chirpsounders, Beacons, SeaSonde, etc. Of course, it's just possible that there is a cloaked ship up there that is scanning us……. :-) :-) So, maybe Wayne crew can add a new button to the K3 such that we'd have: NB (Noise Blanker), NR (Noise Reduction), and FR (Fribble Reducer). Arrrgh - I need a glass of wine! OK, end of thread (at least for me). 73, Jim / W6JHB On Thursday, Mar 15, 2012, at Thursday, 4:17 PM, Jim Sheldon wrote: Disconnect your antenna, set the REF LVL on the P3 so you can see the background noise at the base of the display and watch it for a while. One is somewhere in the neighborhood and the other is coming from a bad TV cable line amplifier on the pole outside my house. I'm having a heck of a time getting the cable company that it's their problem and they are liable for fixing it. I have gotten the local fox hunt group out and they confirm my findings and we know exactly which amp it is. I have spectrum pix of it using the image capture feature of the P3 with dates, times and frequencies. I filed a formal complaint with the FCC and sent them copies of all correspondence with the cable company, my spectrum analysis pictures and notarized affidavits from the fox hunt guys with their direction finding results. Hopefully that will get the same results I got with the power company. Had to file a formal complaint with the FCC on that one too, but now, they are all sweetness and light and whenever I call 'em they jump on the line noise problems as quick as they can free up a crew to clean/fix insulators in the neighborhood. Jim - W0EB Just wondering if I am the Lone Ranger here or if anyone else is having this P3 experience. Every so often, perhaps once every 20 - 40 seconds or so, I see some sort of spur go flying across the screen. It starts low and flies up in frequency, right off the display. With my display span set at 50 kHz below and 50 kHz above, this spur takes only a second to cross the entire display range. Not band dependent, either. My K3 is running on solar / battery power, so it isn't something from my power supply. It isn't causing me a problem, just wondering if I have a special K3/P3 or if this is common. [Elecraft] XG3 KEYING
Just got a XG3 and loving it. Of course I had to try every function out. Memories work well for beacon CW/RTTY. Friends 26 miles away copied it S6 on the 0 Dbm level on 6 meters, of course our antennas are good. A friend several hundred miles away copied me on 40 meters so I am getting hooked on QRPP. Or whatever 1 Milliwatt is. Only function I cannot get to work is the “Configure PF1 so send Morse” Pg 13 in the supplied manual. The one online seems to be out of date. I called Elecraft and left a message but it was probably getting late on Friday afternoon there. Anyone tried this function? Just need a way for a key to plug in HI. Wonder if supplying and unsupplying the antenna at a Morse rate would damage something in the output stage? Trying to use it for everything except what it was intended for.HI. 73 Mike K4PI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] KPA500 hi swr error
I put up a 40 meter vertical with elevated ground plane today. The swr is 1:1 at the bottom of the band (where I operate). For some reason, after sending a few characters, the KPA 500 suddenly shows high swr and faults. After resetting, the cycle begins again. I have an analog swr/watt meter following the KPA500, and it does not show the swr change. It has also done this on my 80 meter antenna. What is going on? Re: [Elecraft] XG3 KEYING
Hi Mike, The PF1 command is used to control whether the PF1 (long keypress of BAND+) performs either a frequency sweep or sends the Morse memory. Using the XG3 Utility, use the Command Tester tab to enter the command PF1,0; This will select the frequency sweep 1 to operate when the Band+ is given a long keypress. PF1,1; This will configure the XG3 to send the contents of the Morse memory, in other words whatever has been programmed into the XG3 using the WM command. Unfortunately there is no way currently to key the XG3 directly from an external key or keyer. 73, Paul -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/XG3-KEYING-tp7380526p7380611.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] P3/Monitor
OK...I've been meaning to ask someone about this. What's the difference between a TV with a VGA computer input and a computer monitor? Is it simply the TV having a tuner? On 3/16/2012 11:00 AM, Rick Bates wrote: Phil, If you want to see the computer and the P3 display at the same time you will need to get two monitors, one for each. [Elecraft] Time Warp...
I was just throwing out some old QST's and in the August 2006 issue, on page 42, under What's New at Dayton 2006? by Joel Hallas is an announcement that ...Elecraft...offers solid-state linears at 800 and 1500W Plus, there's a picture, Elecraft's 1500 W solid-state amplifier. It really looks neat!!! Wish I could have bought one back then...three times the power of my KPA500! Re: [Elecraft] P3 current usage
You can disable the SVGA display with a menu selection, but it makes only a very small difference in the current consumption. On mine, the total P3 current goes from about 590 mA to about 580 mA. (That's with a 13.8V supply. The current is higher with a lower supply voltage.) A modification kit is planned for the K3 that will increase the current available from the 12VDC OUT jack. Re: [Elecraft] Koss Headsets for the K3 (Was: Re: Yamaha CM500 Headset)www
Wellgot a brief chance to play with the Koss SB40 headset tonight. I followed K9YC's advice and set up similar to what others have done for the Yamaha CM550. The two bands at -16, third band at -10 and the two highest at +8. I worked a few people and they all said the audio sounded very good. Frankly, in the monitor I thought it sounded terrible. But most people don't like the way they sound. If I get a chance this weekend I plan on getting on a quiet band with a local that knows my voice before I start making too many adjustments. But I will say the SB40's are VERY comfortable. The headphones sound good as well but I haven't tweaked the RX EQ from my old settings, flat on SSB and a sharp peak at 400 Hz for CW. The bands were pretty noisy tonight so more evaluation is in order. I would expect it to work just fine and sound good with the K3.
