Re: [Elecraft] P3 cursors
Yes, the P3 markers are good for measuring the frequency difference between two signals. If as well that difference (delta) could be shown textually on the P3 it would be even better. Can't be that difficult to do. How about it Elecraft ? 73 Stewart G3RXQ On Thu, 17 May 2012 16:30:22 -0400, Bill Conkling wrote: Well, the markers are very handy for measuring the difference between two signals on the display. Keeps me from wandering too far away and getting into other conversations. And, of course, if you set marker A to a signal up the band, and press the knob on the P3, it will QSY to K3 to that frequency. Marker B does the same for VFO B or the SUB. The original P3 firmware had the baud rate bug, and when I changed to 01.16, all was well (K3 f/w 4.50). Am I mistaken? Have I pushed some hidden button?(it's possible) I do find it distracting. Incidentally, it seems that I prefer to leave the P3 in fixed-tune mode. In tracking mode, the VFO B cursor chases itself up and down the band. Unfortunately, I've given my borrowed KE7X book back to its rightful owner, so I have to ask you guys. [Elecraft] K3 - RX audio degradation with ANF
I am reposting this question, as I received no responses the first time: I generally only use the ANF when it is needed. I do not run it all the time. The reason I do not run the ANF all the time is a slight degradation of the quality of the SSB received audio when it is engaged. Although it does not interfere with the intelligibility of the audio - it does introduce a fuzzy aspect to otherwise armchair copy. Of note: On my Kenwood TS-480, I leave the ANF (Beat Cancel in Kenwood speak) on at all times. It does its job as well as the K3 - and is without the degradation factor. Any suggestions regarding the use of the ANF that I would benefit from? [Elecraft] K3 - RX audio degradation with ANF
The Auto Notch of the K3 is outside the AGC loop and therefor will notch the carrier NOTE but NOT the carrier. Many foreign rigs have the Auto Notch inside the AGC loop and this results in optimal operation with no distortion. This may have something to do with down conversion receivers such as the K3, and I think there have been discussions on this which you can bring up from the list archives. In my opinion this is the one weakness of the K3. Now, with the new AGC threshold I do not get the distortion as before, as the Auto Notch is not nearly as aggressive. I do not hear distortion with the notch on at this time. The Auto Notch is a bit slower to engage but the landing is much softer in as far as distortion, or the hollow sounding audio which was the case before MCU 4.51. I used to own an Icom 7800 and 7700. Icoms Auto Notch is superb but is inside the AGC loop. I noticed both Ten Tec and Elecraft place the Notch outside the AGC circuit--there must be a good reason for it but not sure what it is. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - RX audio degradation with ANF
ANF is the common use abbreviation for Auto Notch Filter. A lot of rigs use that nomenclature. The K3's ANF on SSB has not worked correctly IMO for several firmware releases. Someone posted a fix a while back that involved resetting back to factory settings, rolling back to a previous firmware, reloading all your settings and then loading the current firmware. That's a lot of work and I was hoping a more elegant fix could be implemented in a firmware update. In my experience, the issue isn't so much extreme distortion on the signal, it's that it doesn't notch the offending signal properly. To reproduce, watch your RX signal with a strong carrier on a waterfall with a computer application like MixW. Turn on the ANF and you'll see that the K3 notches on either side of the offending carrier, but not actually right on the carrier. If you have good ears, you can hear this yourself. The manual notch works fine, of course. I haven't tried the latest beta firmware, so I don't know if this issue has been addressed yet. It needs to be addressed, though. Tim, I use the ANF regularly on 75 meters to block heterodynes and have no issues or distortion and it works extremely well. I use AGC settings: Nor decay .30 HLDA Nor PLS 004 SLP 007 THR 030 S I use 2.8 8 pole filter and on occasion a 1.8 8 pole filter. I have my PRE amp off and ATT on, generally as the noise floor is around 1-2 S units using my ~ 350' horizontal loop. My inverted V Double Bazooka has a slightly higher noise floor. Again, I see no issues and am using the latest firmware. The notch removes the offending notch, but not the signal itself, of course. I also have a P3. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Low AF Output
I also received a built K2 recently. Love the radio accept the speaker audio is very raspy and distorted even at low volumes. I'll check my speaker as well. I know that the ATU became unplugged when it was shipping. That would have to be a pretty hard hit for that to happen. 73's Demian (KA2ZEY) -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K2-4155-speaker-audio-tp369557p7556031.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] P3 +12V mod for K3
Brian, I did one for a friend a couple weeks ago - yes, I found the same thing, but decided to leave the cable in place and work around it (no bent pins) - it did work, but it was touch and go for a while. Yes, the manual should mention it - and I agree, the easiest way to remove that cable from the SubRX is to get the I/O board out of the way, although it is possible to remove the cable with the KIO3 in place - but plugging the cable back in with the KIO3 in place is a bit of a challenge (but not impossible if you hold the connector with pliers carefully). 73, Don W3FPR On 5/18/2012 3:28 PM, Brian Alsop wrote: Did two of these today. Re: [Elecraft] For those at Dayton...
Thank you Ken!! Based on that I called and there are still people at Aptos and I was able to place the order and get my time for placement in the queue. As much as I wanted the kit the difference was minimal and if like the KX3 I paid a small premium for not only factory assembly but probably an earlier ship date. Let the wait begin. Thank you Vicky for taking the order, well done. Now if I was at Dayton I could ask a technical question. Will I be able to make my antenna selection within the KAT500 at the K3. That would help with laying out the station. I could place the KAT500 within sight but out or arms reach. Saving valuable close desk/shelf space. I agree the price is a bit higher than I would have liked to have seen. I am sure it will work far better than the MFJ and I don't think either will handle the full output on 6m which the KAT500 will do or so I was told. Re: [Elecraft] P3 +12V mod for K3
De-soldering has many possible facets, and which one you use will depend on your experience, tools available and to a certain extent the amount of stubbornness you want to tolerate. Each connection is different. I routinely use a Hakko 808 desoldering iron, but there are times when a slender tool (narrow tipped long screwdriver) will do a good job of prying the component up off the board, and the 2nd lead can easily be removed - for multi-legged components that process can be much complex. This made all the difference with the board in the K3. Re: [Elecraft] For those at Dayton (KAT500) and about tuner cost
Based on the Elecraft tuner performance from all of theirs I have used in the equipment I have owned, it is well worth paying more for the KAT 500. I have all the MFJ auto tuners and have had issues. I currently own an MFJ-998 which recently updated the firmware, but it has lots of room for improvement. I have had LDG, all are gone. My parents (they have passed) taught me many years ago: generally speaking, you get what you pay for . This was during the onslaught of big box cheap crap. This is not about sticking with Elecraft, it is about quality, customer service, design and upgradability. I have a THP HL-2.5KFx, it is quality, quality, quality. It is very well designed, etc. If I was looking for a lower powered amp, I would go hands down with the Elecraft Amp. The Elecraft stuff is well designed. My THP, and I am only referring to the HL-2.5KFx, will stay in my shack. I am not interested in any of their other amps as they are not nearly the same in design. 73, Bill K9YEQ -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of W0MU Mike Fatchett Sent: Friday, May 18, 2012 3:28 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] For those at Dayton (KAT500) I agree the price is a bit higher than I would have liked to have seen. I am sure it will work far better than the MFJ and I don't think either will handle the full output on 6m which the KAT500 will do or so I was told. I smoked my LDG the other day on 6m because I forgot they are only rated for half power on 6m. Re: [Elecraft] For those at Dayton (KAT500)
I've never owned a MFJ tuner capable of handling its rated power for anything over a 1.5 SWR (and then you get into arguments about PEP vs CW vs Continuous Carrier). They all burn out with even a slight mismatch. Since I'm not trying to tune a dummy load, I'll go with something that can handle 500 watts full carrier into a bad mismatch. That's the reason I bought a manual Palstar tuner for use with my KPA500 -- and it has served me well, but is a manual tuner. I have faith that Elecraft will meet the performance criteria. I have zero faith, based on long bitter experience, that MFJ can. 73, Bob, WB4SON __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 now on order form
Greg, It is true what you say - the ladies in the sales office do a great job and will go out of their way to determine that each customer is satisfied. Eric and Wayne support that type of response, so if you have a sales, billing , or similar non-technical question, they will be able to answer directly, If other areas of the Elecraft operation are involved, it may take longer for your question to be filtered to the proper person, but they will stay on Top of it until it is resolved. 73, Don W3FPR On 5/19/2012 12:45 AM, Greg wrote: Its true that the customer attention is first class at Elecraft...but I expect what may be closer to the truth in this case is that the boss got a ration of flack from the ladies because he didn't have it set up before the word got out that orders were being accepted...hi hi. Re: [Elecraft] P3 +12V mod for K3
Did the +12V mod to my K3 with Sub RX yesterday. As you say the instructions did not mention the Aux cable, however I found that moving the cable to the rear of the K3 and then extracting the PA towards the front was no problem. Just needed to take care. 73 Stewart G3RXQ On Fri, 18 May 2012 19:28:51 +, Brian Alsop wrote: Did two of these today. One had a subrx. One did not. Ended up also removing the I/O board and pulling out the cable from the subrx. There is perhaps a better way. Not a big deal but extra work. 73 de Brian/K3KO - No virus found in this message.
