[Elecraft] [K3] RX Attenuator value, and COR activation level.
Hi, What is the value of the RX attenuator in the K3? Re: [Elecraft] [K3] RX Attenuator value, and COR activation level.
the ATTN is 10dB. Not sure where the CORs activate however. I do know that I've hit them before though.. :) Not sure if this helps you but I do also know that you can get to +20dBm and as long as you have the extreme signal protection mod done to your radio (or it was built after 9/1/2009) before the CORs are activated and your ATT will be automatically engaged to protect the RX post amp. ~Brett (N7MG) On Wed, Jun 13, 2012 at 12:52 AM, g0afh g0...@g0afh.com wrote: Hi, What is the value of the RX attenuator in the K3? Re: [Elecraft] KX3 questions
Well, I haven't rec'd my KX3 yet, but from what I've read, and some videos posted here, it should take about 2-3 hours from the time you open the box, assuming you are already set with an ESD matt and wrist strap. Go buy a new, good quality #1 and #0 Phillips screw-driver, have your multi-meter handy and a pair of nice needle-nosed pliers and you should be set. For more details, see the KX3 Assembly Manual on the website (elecraft.com 'Manuals and Downloads' 'KX3'. My KX3 is supposed to ship in the next few days, so I'm anxious to get started on mine. The Huntsville Hamfest is still a ways off, but I want to offer help for those who are making plans to participant and/or planning to stay up in the Monte Sano Campgrounds that weekend. Besides 7 QRP Forums at the hamfest (4 Saturday/3 Sunday), our 3rd Two Days in Huntsville includes a Traditional Southern BBQ and a (let's call it Unique) QRP Contest with a Celebrity Judge. These will be at the pavilion up on Monte Sano (7.5 miles from the Von Braun Convention Center). Re: [Elecraft] KX3 questions
That's the beauty of buying an Elecraft kit, Ron. You start with the basic KX3 and add options as you feel that they're needed. Try that with the Big Three. A new model is introduced, and suddenly your current transceiver has dropped in resale value. The necessary tools are noted in the Tools Required for Assembly section of the KX3 Assembly Manual: http://www.elecraft.com/manual/KX3%20Kit%20Assembly%20Manual-sm.pdf Depending on the timeframe of the near future, Elecraft is quoting 90-120 days for delivery for KX3s ordered now. 72/73 de Jim - AD6CW On 6/12/2012 7:42 PM, Ronald Nutter wrote: I am thinking about purchasing a KX3. Best part is the evenings and early mornings on CW and PSK31 with the KX3. I've added EW8O, IN3GNV and various others to the log. This rig is a pure pleasure with its combination of size, simplicity of use but full features, not to mention being miserly on battery power. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Interface with Kenwood TS-590
Doug: I just got a KPA500 and spent the last few days getting it going. I am using a TS-480 but ran into the same RS-232 problem you mention. After investigating I finally figured out what was going on. The problem is, when my KPA500 powers up it ALWAYS initializes BOTH of its RS-232 ports to 38.4k. The menus may look like 19.2k, 9600, etc. but there appears to be a bug in the KPA firmware that causes it to ignore the correct values you have set in the menus. The solution is that you must go into the KPA menu and change the baud rates to something else and then back again to the desired speed. Or, you can set the radio to use 38.4k and the speed problem won't come up. Unfortunately if you are using a SteppIR antenna like me, the SteppIR won't work at 38.4k, it only goes up to 19.2k. So for the time being I am running the SteppIR off the TS-480 RS-232 port and relying on RF sensing for KPA band switching. And there is another problem. There is a menu setting for SER POLL. It must be set to ON, at least for my TS-480. Unfortunately it always initializes to OFF, regardless of what the menu says. Solution is to go in to the KPA menu for that item, turn it off, then back on. Power cycling the KPA always resets the ports on my KPA to 38.4k and the SER POLL to OFF, no matter what state it was in at last power off and no matter what the menus say. If you do these things your RS-232 band control should work fine, mine does. By the way, you can do the changes in speed and polling thru the PC port (initially at 38.4k of course) or thru the menu buttons on the KPA. Speaking of the PC port, mine will lock up after a few minutes for no apparent reason and I lose PC control of the KPA. XCVR port remains unaffected. I can run the Elecraft utility program on my PC and watch it poll the KPA. After a while it just quits. Solution is to power cycle the KPA (then reset the ports, etc.) to reset the port. A tweak of the KPA firmware should fix all this. I ran into another problem. The KPA ALC does not appear compatible with my TS-480. All sorts of strange power problems. All Ok when I pull the plug. Are you using ALC successfully with the 590? I made a table of values for drive level versus KPA power output. When I change bands on the TS-480 I must remember to go in and set its power to the value needed by the KPA for that band, anywhere from 28 to 37 watts. Fortunately the TS-480 has 1 watt steps available in its power control and I can set it just right. I just need to remember to do it every time I change bands. Hopefully I can resolve this in the near future. [Elecraft] KX3 sensitivity

If so, what tools should I either pack in my luggage or try to buy locally ? Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Receiver overload point?
I generally dont chime in on issues but I believe the bigger problem may be how well your converter handles the strong signal unless someone is tx a bad signal ( distortation ) I have never had overload ' issues on 75 meter the DEM stuff is pretty good,, not sure what else is outthere Bob K3DJC On Wed, 13 Jun 2012 21:42:58 +0100 G0AFH g0...@g0afh.com writes: Hi What is the largest signal that I can reasonably expect the K3 to handle before overload? Re: [Elecraft] OT: MITx Kick Off - Sign Up for Circuits and Electronics
Congratulations, Kevin on completing the course and doing well. It is heart-breaking to see the postings from the people who missed the final for what-ever reason or missed a C by a single point. I, too, hadn't heard of this course before Bill sent that email so I think we both must have signed up about the same time. Yes, it is really nice to have a better understanding of circuits than before. For me, I really had no clear idea what OP amps were doing or the small-signal behavior of MOSFETs. I think I prefer the slower manner of studying that I used when I originally obtained my ham ticket to the fire-hose approach but I'm still quite please that I was able to take the course. I would definitely recommend these courses to others with the caveat that they should have plenty of time available to dedicate to studying because the recommended ten hours a week probably isn't enough for most people. Is there a problem with the list ( or is it just at my end )? I have seen no new postings since June 8. Re: [Elecraft] Not seeing any recent postings
Doug, Check with your ISP to see if they have done something to help you. I understand that Gmail does not send you copies of your own posts to any reflector, perhaps your ISP has decided it is your best interests to do something similar. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/13/2012 8:42 PM, Doug VE3VS wrote: Is there a problem with the list ( or is it just at my end )? [Elecraft] XV144 wanted
Hello everyone, I am starting to gather equipment for an attempt at moonbounce. I would like to find an XV144 2 meter transverter for the station. I know that Elecraft has many and it would be great to build another but funds are limited. If anyone has an XV144 that they are not using and you are willing to part with it for a reasonable amount, please drop me a note. Thanks very much.
