[Elecraft] KX3 PBT SSB

2013-05-15 Thread paulb

Hi folks

can someone check this I may be reading incorrectly..

Using SSB narrow filter there seems to be audio images when using
bandwidth below about 2.45khz

PBT SSB is set to LoHI Cut
Low = .150
Hi= 2.45

Now set the PBT to Nor

Narrow bandwidth SSB tunes correctly if FC = 1.5
and BW > 1.8

Personal preference is using PBT LoHI Cut

Roofing filter is installed.
No problem on CW, phase and gain settings
have been checked.

thanks

cheers

I worked with those as well.
All was fine here at home.

But when up in the hills, wow, the rf noise is obvious, if you are in a
quiet location.

FYI, there are a ton of these on eBay and here: http://www.prodctodc.com/

I have no interest, bla, bla.

I have been monkeying around with them and in real life (I have no test
equipment) they work well. I am building a 18650, 5,000 mah 8 cell battery
pack with a monitoring board and a buck converter for my KX3. So far the
biggest issue is the dang battery holders. The wire is way small so I have
to come up with s screw/nut scheme to attach heaver wire to. They cannot be
soldered as they melt.

[Elecraft] NaP3, quisk for KX3

2013-05-15 Thread glen worstell
A while ago I asked about panadapter software for the KX3, and if anyone
knew of a fix for the center frequency bug in NaP3. The author thinks
the bug is in the KX3 firmware, but I don't think so.

Someone recommend quisk (for linux), and after several hours and a nice
email from the author I got it working. It is very nice, and a bonus is
that it runs under linux which is my preferred OS. No center freq bug.

The install and configuration can be a bit time-consuming so if you want
some assistance please send a private email to me.

My (only) home station now is quisk software and a KX3, KPA500, KAT500,
and soon (I hope) KXPA100. I am a very happy camper (actually when
camping I only use the KX3).

Re: [Elecraft] K1 battery recommendations?

2013-05-15 Thread Doug Person
I bought two 12v lithium-ion packs off ebay. They have built-in charge
controllers and can accept practically any 12v input. The smaller one
is something like 3amp/hr and the larger one is maybe 7amp/hr. The
smaller one will keep a K1 or KX1 on the air for many hours. The larger
one handles the K2/10 and the KX3 for many hours. I also use them to
power my auto-tracking telescopes. They are pretty small and light for
the amount of power they hold. Even have on/off switches. For larger
power needs, I bought a garden tractor battery on Wal-Mart for $25. I
have had enough juice to run 100 watts in the field for an entire day
with enough left to run a telescope for 4 or 5 hours. To make an even
nicer package, I found some plastic battery boxes on Amazon for $9 that
encase the battery and have nice carry strap. I mounted a PowerPole
distribution strip on the top with strong double-sided tape. I have a
Duracell charger/maintainer I bought for a few bucks from a clearance
shelf somewhere that keeps the battery ready to go.

I'm not familiar with the R/C batteries But they sound great. I'll have
to find one.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Boost Buck 13.8 V Regulator

2013-05-15 Thread Jon Moody
Hi Glenn,

I have purchased both of these DC-DC power converters and have been very
happy with them. They both have an adjustable output set voltage and seem
to have very good regulation. The only issue is with RFI that they
generate. The good news is that they are pretty well shielded in aluminum
cases. But their is stil some leakage from the power connections but I
have found that attaching good quality ferrite beads on the power
connectors to pretty much eliminate this as well.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Low-Ripple-CC-CV-Car-Power-Supply-Module-LED-Driver-DC-DC-8-30V-to-2-16V-80W-/251112762798?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a777cadae

YMMV and I am sure that their are many other equally fine Regulators out
there

Re: [Elecraft] K1 battery recommendations?

2013-05-15 Thread Phil Hystad
Mike,

I don't have a K1 but I do have a KX1, KX3, and Norcal 40a. I much prefer
Lithium-ion over lead-acid gel cell type. Although it is more expensive, it is
far superior (at least as far as I have found).

I have two 1x4 (four cell) packs from Buddipole with Lithium Iron Phosphate
(nano-phosphate) construction from A123 Systems. This battery provides 13.2
volts (nominal) at 2.3 Ah capacity. This battery can run a 100 watt
transmitter for 30 minutes! I use one pack at a time so keep one pack in
reserve. This is for portable ops, no hiking, no walking, no bicycling
(although, all of that is possible).

I think the current cost is $95 but you do need a LIFEPO4 compatible charger.

I use the 3-cell lipo batteries that I use for my R/C planes. They are
small (~1x1.5x4"), 11.1v @ 30A! I've run my K1 or KX1 for nearly a week
on a single charge, operating as much as I cared to. R/C use demands
lots of current for a relatively short flight of 10-15 minutes. When
they no longer deliver a long enough flight, I retire them to ham radio

Subject: [Elecraft] DC Buck Boost

FYI, there are a ton of these on eBay and here: http://www.prodctodc.com/

I have no interest, bla, bla.

I have been monkeying around with them and in real life (I have no test
equipment) they work well. I am building a 18650, 5,000 mah 8 cell battery pack
with a monitoring board and a buck converter for my KX3. So far the biggest
issue is the dang battery holders. The wire is way small so I have to come up
with s screw/nut scheme to attach heaver wire to. They cannot be soldered as
they melt.
