[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report
Good Evening, It is always surprising where my signal can reach. But QSB was alternately boosting and diminishing signals. Some overall hiss but mostly quiet with a few whistlers passing through the frequency. A lot of broken terrain logging techniques were developed in my neighborhood. The narrow gauge tracks are still visible in some locations. There was a cedar mill only a mile from my house with a dance hall (etc.) next to it. The nearby town - Bacona no longer exists but leaves its name on roads. Where there had been many homesteaded houses there are only a few left standing. Farming does not work up here unless you are cropping stands of Doug Fir. 73, Kevin. Re: [Elecraft] Suggestions??
Rich, I assume you are using the internal ATU. If so, the external wattmeter will not change - it will show the SWR into the antenna, and not at the input to the internal ATU. An ATU does not change the antenna SWR, it only adds L and C in a combination that will make the PA transistors in the transmitter 'happy' which allows maximum power output. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/28/2018 7:31 PM, Rich Arland wrote: While attempting to get Z60A on 40M last night I ran into a problem that I never encountered before. Re: [Elecraft] Suggestions??
Rich, As you describe your configuration, your SWR bridge is between your KX2 and the antenna. The matching that takes place is within your KX2, and apparently, the ATU was able to achieve a match. That doesn't change what was happening on the transmission line from the antenna to your SWR bridge, it is what is is and always was. No "antenna tuner" in the history of humankind has ever "tuned" an antenna. It's a really unfortunate choice of nomenclature. The ATU in your KX2 transformed the impedance it saw at the antenna connector to something the PA stage was happy with. That's all. Nothing changed on the transmission line from the antenna as evidenced by your SWR Bridge's report. That very high SWR on your transmission line could be anything from a "Not To Worry" to a "Very High Loss" situation. You didn't say what your transmission line is, EDZ antennas are often fed with some form of open-wire line. If so for you, losses are likely low. If it's fed with coax, maybe not so much. If you make Q's, it's working, that's why it's called "Amateur Radio." Thanks, guys, for understanding - and being interested. It is a fun kit to build and is from Four States QRP Group, http://www.4sqrp.com . This a regenerative design based on the famous Paraset and Atlantic Hopper, which Four States calls the Bayou Hopper. I had my first qso on it yesterday and it really takes a bit of a fine touch to continually tune with one hand while the op is transmitting. But it's all part of the fun! It puts out about 5 W to 6 W. And then Agent 99... :-D 73! Mike ab3ap On 01/28/2018 06:11 PM, Mark E. Musick wrote: Not a problem Mike. It is radio related. Re: [Elecraft] Flying with a Spiderpole
Hi Thaire, The 6Gs DXpeditions (TX6G, E6GG, ZL7G + later this year VK9X(full call TBD)) have all included 12m and/or 18m Spiderpoles as antenna supports. We wrap them in bubble wrap and ship them in ski bags or hard ski/snowboard cases as checked baggage. No issues with breakage or loss, but we have had to describe them as 'fishing poles' a couple of times. If you want to have your antenna support as carry-on baggage, you'll usually need to keep it to a collapsed length of 1.2m (4ft) or less. For that the DX-Wire poles are ideal (available from http://www.dx-wire.de/lng/en/fiberglass-poles/?xploidID=156c8060417ce6049df949b4569517dc or from SOTABeams) HTH. Enjoy the trip! [Elecraft] Lease a KPA1500?
This an informal, nonscientific survey: Would there be any interest in leasing rather than buying a KPA1500? The full price of the amp is $6K, which with sales taxes and shipping, if applicable, would bring it to $6.5K or so. Not everyone wants to plunk that much down all at once. So I was thinking – suppose a lessor (“owner” is easier) bought the amp and leased it to the lessee (the “user”) for a monthly rate. At the end of the lease term it would either be returned or purchased for the buyout price, much like a car lease. Do you think there would be any interest in such a deal? What monthly fee would seem fair and saleable? I have begun thinking about the terms of the deal. The amp would be shipped directly from Elecraft to the user, so it never comes to the owner. Any problems on delivery the user works out with Elecraft. Mods, if any, during the lease would be factory installed, or not installed, and the cost shared. In short, the user never opens the chassis. Likewise for repairs, if any. Repairs made necessary solely by the user’s out-of-spec actions are done by Elecraft at the user’s cost. Insurance coverage, maybe through ARRL, for lightning and the like would be in place. At the end of the lease, if the amp is returned to the owner, it goes first to Elecraft for an inspection and tune up, at shared cost. Years ago a partner and I had a sideline business of leasing general aviation aircraft, so I do have some tolerance for risk. Fortunately, we never had a loss. But I don’t know how much leasing demand there might be out there for a full legal limit Elecraft amp , or at what price. Any thoughts at all would be very much appreciated. Re: [Elecraft] Who would spend 30 hours+ building an Elecraft K2? (plus: special pricing)
Slowly, ever so slowly over the years, I shifted from QRP CW, mostly with the K2, to 100w SSB, with the K3 and a couple of other rigs, operating only on a couple of SSB nets. And then I read Wayne's post. And the responses. And looked at the K2 on the desk, connected but unused, gathering dust. So last night I fired it up, in these poor propagation days, and running CW on 40m at just under 5w on the meter into an inverted V, snagged AE4YP in FL, K3Y/1 in NH, and shortly after, K3Y/0 in CO. This morning I heard K3Y/9 - very weak - but he did not copy me, and I refused to turn up the power. Thanks, Wayne. Re: [Elecraft] Fw: KPA500 Power out query.
My amp is close to 7 years old and 20 has always required more drive. 27 to 30 watts on all bands except 20 where I'll run it up to 35 in a pinch. Elecraft suggested I send it in, but I haven't let the smoke out, yet. Unlike your issue, I see a change when I increase drive. I drive the amp with either a Yaesu FT-950 or a FTDX3K. ALC is not wired. There is a modification kit out for the amp, but have no idea what it addresses. Also, heat causes some stress on the chassis and you'll here pings as it flexes with temp. The first time I heard that, it scared the heck out of me. I believe there is a fix for that, too. Re: [Elecraft] My radio all of a sudden is so loud it blew a speaker!
Tom, I can't explain the cause of what's happening. Rob and I ran into some craziness last weekend with power out and the antenna tuner. We fixed the symptom, but have been unable to trace the cause. In my case, I'm willing to swear that RF got in and corrupted the matrix of L and C values stored in the radio's memory, but I can't reproduce the symptom. What Rob suggested was to store off the radio settings using the utility, doing a reset, and put the setting back. That seems to have fixed the problem, so far. What is crazy is that of the set of K3 owners around us, only Rob and I seem to have had a problem. In the about 2 years I've used my K3s, there has never been a hint of anything like this. 73, Barry K3NDM -- Original Message -- From: "tomb18"To: "Barry" ; "Elecraft" Sent: 1/27/2018 7:24:54 PM Subject: Re: Re[2]: [Elecraft] My radio all of a sudden is so loud it blew a speaker! Go into the setup menu and check the AGC threshold. As you move it up in number, the audio output goes up, and it takes a greater signal amplitude before it "kicks" in. I usually use this when using data A to prevent AGC capture, or at least as much, by other signals in the passband, for instance FT8 with a received bandwidth of 2.5KHz. Normally, the K3 AGC is excellent and should have prevented what you describe unless the the AGC threshold is too high. 73, Barry K3NDM -- Original Message -- From: "Tom" To: "Elecraft" Sent: 1/27/2018 6:24:40 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] My radio all of a sudden is so loud it blew a speaker! >Hi, >No the AGC is On. [Elecraft] Fw: KPA500 Power out query.
- Forwarded Message - From: Mike StreeterTo: elecraft...@yahoogroups.com Sent: Saturday, January 27, 2018 12:04:40 PM CSTSubject: KPA500 Power out query. I am driving my KPA500 with my K3 to a Mosley PRO 67. On every band except 20 meters 25 watts out from the K3 will give me at least 500 watts out of the amplifier. On 20 meters I get 450 watts out with 25 watts drive but no increase even if I go to 40 watts out from the K3. I have put a dummy load on the K3 using the usual RG 213 and the SWR is 1:1, and I have checked the antenna with an MFJ 259, using the usual RG 213 cable and it is 1:1 at 14.000 up to 1.4:1 at 14.350.I have loaded the latest firmware to both the K3 and the KPA. I realize that the difference between 450 and 500 watts is negligible but it bugs me that it is not giving me full power out on 20.Anyone have any ideas as to how to fix it?Many thanks, Mike, WM5DX. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Re who would spend 30 hours building a k2?
If you enjoy kit building, the K2 goes together one part at a time, just like any other kit. Enjoy the process. The K2 breaks the assembly into 3 major pieces and has an alignment and test section following each assembly section so you can check your work. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/28/2018 7:51 AM, W4EDN wrote: I bought a used k2 and just spent 12 hrs building a Kant-100. Re: [Elecraft] K2? Easy peasy
All, On the KI6WX mod, the value of R9 should be 1.5k instead of 15k as stated. Please excuse my "late night fingers". Those two resistor changes are only necessary if the KI6WX KSB2 mod is added to a K2 with the KPA100 installed. 73, Don W3FPR All, I do indeed have that mod, but I thought it was mainly for Low Frequency rolloff. I do know that it works quite well for that purpose, but I don't know about the 6 dB gain. Change C34 to 0.47uF, and change C32 to something in the range of 0.003uF to 0.005uF. If you want additional gain, I would recommend the KI6WX KSB2 increased KSB2 RF Gain mod. It adds gain without the possibility of overloading the Speech Compressor. If you do that mod, change R9 to 15k and add a 1k resistor between P1 pin 5 and the base of Q3. 73, Don W3FPR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
