[Elecraft] Winter Field Day report (Blazing Saddles edition)

2019-01-29 Thread Wayne Burdick
The "winter" weather in California over the weekend was embarrassingly mild.
Even balmy. It'll likely go down as the hottest January on record, as last
year's did, and the one before that, etc., making this hardly the place to
mount a credible WFD effort. Worse, a heavy slate of honey-dos reduced my
on-air time to just a couple of hours. So I band-hopped and logged a dozen or
so QSOs on SSB and CW. It was a bit like summer Field Day squeezed into less
spectral real-estate.

Surely some of you have more exciting reports Polar Vortex, plague,
locusts? Grog that wouldn't thaw? Tongue stuck to icy telescoping whip?

[Elecraft] KAT500 Utility Operate -> Memorize

2019-01-29 Thread Andy Durbin
"The tuner will memorize the antenna selection and matching elements every time
it tunes."

Yes, if the tuning solution is the result of an auto tune, then it is
memorized. However if the tuning solution was set manually, then SM; is needed
to memorize that solution for the current frequency.

"SM (Save Memory, SET only)
SET format: SM; or SM f; where f is a frequency in kHz.
SM saves the current tuner settings (antenna, side, inductor, capacitor, and
bypass VSWR) in the tuner memory for the indicated (or most recent transmit)
frequency.
If f is zero or missing, the last Transmit frequency is used. If
transmitting, the measured frequency is used instead of f.
SM; is used by the KAT500 Utility Operate Page Memorize button.
SM with a frequency was introduced in firmware version 1.20."

I make manual settings far more often than using auto tune so I use the SM;
function a lot when configuring for a new or modified antenna.

It's a good idea to save the KAT500 configuration (save to file) quite often
because it's not too difficult to mess up a perfectly good tuner configuration.
E.g. my dummy load and my 160 m OCF are on the same KAT500 antenna port but
switched by a separate coax switch. An accidental auto tune with the dummy
load selected will wipe out a good tuning solution for the antenna.

It would be nice if the user had the option to inspect the auto tuning solution
before it is used to override a saved solution. Maybe that option is available
but I have not found it yet.

Andy, k3wyc

Re: [Elecraft] Best Mac to use with KX3

2019-01-29 Thread Bill Frantz
cocoaModem has Dual RTTY mode which decodes both the main and
sub receivers. This mode is useful in a DX pileup. I'm planning
on seeing how it works with RTTY contesting, where I complete a
S QSO on the main receiver, while using the sub to find the
next station.

The response of the crossed-loop tuning aid is better, making
signal tuning easier. I think its decoding algorithms are
better, but others may disagree.

The bigest problem with cocoaModem is that it was written by a
signal processing genius, but the coding style drives most Mac
programmers crazy. It also seeme to have some threading
problems, but they don't occur often enough to be really painful.

I am running Version 2.0 release 1.03. This is a version which
has had the minimum level of upgrades to run on modern MacOSes.
For example, RTTY mode doesn't work but Dual RTTY does. Since
cocoaModem is an open source program, I have no problem sending
you a copy to try.
