Re: [Elecraft] Using Elecraft KPA-1500 for 2 radios

Nope. The key inputs of both amps are buffered.  Partial schematic of
Titan is here.

http://k9yc.com/TitanKeyingLogic.pdf

K4XU once told me that it was his initials on the published schematics,
and I think he later worked for Alpha.  For operation with most rigs,
the PTT position of the PTT/KEY switch is used for all modes. The QSK
position is for a keying method used by early Ten Tec rigs where the
operator keys the amp and the amp keys the rig.

If both of yours do that, you can probably connect them in parallel to
the Key input of the power amp using an RCA Y-cable. I've done that for
years to switch my K3 between my KPA500 and a 1500w tube amp (for many

Re: [Elecraft] Using Elecraft KPA-1500 for 2 radios

2019-03-17 Thread Jim Brown
Not a great choice. SWR gets increasing nasty above 15M because the
construction uses chassis as signal return rather than carrying it on
the circuit board. It's a two-sided board, but the "ground" layer is
broken under the traces that carry the RF, so return current can't flow
on that layer. I didn't have the heart to try to measure crosstalk.

5-6 years ago, I bought several of them for antenna switching, and
learned that the hard way. I modified them by paralleling copper braid
from the connectors to the board and following the RF paths through the
relays across the board as best I could. That reduced the SWR by about
half.

I've since replaced all of them, and they're for sale. :)

I own a Flex 6400 and an Icom 7700. I currently have the amplifier connected
to the Flex. There may be times I want to use the Icom 7700. Other than
disconnecting the send and control cables from the 1500 that go to the Flex and
plugging in the same cables from the 7700 is there any other way to have both
sets of cables connected to the amplifier safely? I would only be using one
radio at a time and the other one would be turned off. I know that I would
have to go into the menu settings of the amplifier to change the baud radio and
radio when I use the other radio.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 PA Current

2019-03-17 Thread Bill Johnson
From my formal training in audio tech, a 10 dB gain is needed to get a
perceived doubling of audio. With an audio sampler device listening for volume
levels recording on a level meter, try doubling the output level on your output
device according to your sampling device and at the same time listening to what
you think doubling actually appears to you, then compare mentally the
difference to what you perceive is real. Totally different in my experience.
I could never figure out what was double while looking at the actual controls
and what was factually happening and what my hearing and brain perceived
without measuring and metering

What you're calling a "knee" is better described as a combination of receiver
AGC,  perception of loudness and signal to noise by our ear/brain function, and
how various signal characteristics combine to provide speech intelligibility. A
change in OVERALL loudness of 6-10 dB is perceived as twice (or half) as loud
when the signal is well above the noise, and 1 dB is about the smallest change
IN OVERALL loudness that untrained listeners can perceive.

But when the signal is close to the noise, a few dB change in the signal to
noise ratio often makes a big difference in speech intelligibility.

And what I learned in my professional life and have been teaching the ham
community for more than ten years is that speech intelligibility is most
strongly dependent on components in the 800 Hz to 3 kHz range, with higher
frequencies making a small additional contribution. Roughly half of the ENERGY
in speech is below 500 Hz, but this sound makes almost no contribution to
speech intelligibility. SO -- using TXEQ to remove that sound is the equivalent
of doubling the effective talk power (3dB)! This is why I've always recommended
setting TXEQ for max cut in the three lowest bands, 6 dB cut in the 4th band
(400 Hz), and a small boost
(3-6 dB) in the top two bands.

Careful use of good speech compression can add another 10dB of talk power, so
the combination of EQ and compression can improve signal to noise by 13 dB,
which is equivalent to multiplying transmitter power  by 20!

Yes, and height above ground can matter a LOT on the HF bands.

Buck,

It sounds like that noise is coming from whatever computer software application
you are using.  You mentioned N1MM.
When you unplug the USB cable, whatever software you are using loses
communications with the radio.
When you plug it back in, that program is not attempting to re-establish
communications.

What applications do you have active on your computer?

I again suggest you get the microphone to work first - unplug everything from
the K3 except the microphone, the power and the antenna connection.  There may
be something unrelated to the microphone going awry, so eliminate everything
except the microphone.  When that works, build things back up one at a time
until you discover the culprit.

[Elecraft] Elecraft booth at RARSfest

2019-03-17 Thread Don Wilhelm
Hello to all Elecraft fans in North Carolina and adjacent states who
will be attending Saturday RARSfest April 20.

We will have an Elecraft booth at RARSfest again this year.

If anyone would be willing to help at the booth, please let me know.
Any assistance would be quite welcome.

If you are able to help set up the booth on Friday April 19 beginning at
about 5PM, you are also welcome. There is a vendor's dinner and welcome
from 7 to 8PM, so you will not go hungry.

All Elecraft gear to be displayed is accounted for, so you do not need
to bring any of your own equipment.

Please let me know if you are willing to help and the approximate hours
you will be available.

Re: [Elecraft] Digital set up for K3

2019-03-17 Thread Barry

Jay,
Your settings should look something like this:
Mode - Data A - This turns off the CMP and equalizers
Power - 50 Watts looks good
Mike/line in - should be set such that the ALC indicates as you show
with the power slider on the software just below the top
Make sure the software know to use the USB codec speaker for its output
and not the computer's sound card.
Turn up the monitor to just hear the transmitted signal. It will not be
a steady tone.

VOX - ON

This should work. You may need to adjust the vox gain to turn the radio
on when tone turns on; it a menu setting.

One last thought. You will get a steady tone if you push the tune button
on the software, yet the signal you want with transmit enabled will not
be steady.

Re: [Elecraft] Using Elecraft KPA-1500 for 2 radios

2019-03-17 Thread Mike - W5JR
I have a KPA/KAT500 combo connected to my Flex 6600 and K3. The K3 has all of
the cables connected, so when it’s on, it controls the package with full
integration. I use the “key interupter” to break out the key line. It’s “Y’d”
with the key line from the Flex as Jim mentions into the KAT500. I switch input
coaxes via a two port manual selector. That could be automated using one of
several options if desired.

Works great.

Several thoughts. First, both of Elecraft's power amps nearly
instantaneously detect the frequency of the drive signal, no there is no
need for the rig to send band information to the amp. Second, ALC should
never be used to set TX power -- that should always be done by setting
the output power of the rig.

The only necessary connections are the "amp key" line that puts the amp
in transmit mode and the coax between the rig and the amp input.
Switching the coax is easy with a SPDT coax switch or relay.

Most of the rigs I've owned use a short on the key line to key the amp.
If both of yours do that, you can probably connect them in parallel to
the Key input of the power amp using an RCA Y-cable. I've done that for
years to switch my K3 between my KPA500 and a 1500w tube amp (for many
years a Ten Tec Titan, now an 87A).

Re: [Elecraft] k2 VCO at 12900kHz, no LSB power out

2019-03-17 Thread Don Wilhelm

Charles,

12900kHz sounds like a proper frequency for the PLL Reference Oscillator
(measured at TP3). The VFO frequency is at TP1 and should be quite near
8913 kHz when tuned to 4000kHz.

Trim the corner of the KSB2 board so it clears TP1. There are no PC
traces on that corner of the board, only a ground plane on the bottom side.

As for the USB/LSB problem - what are the BFO settings for LSB and USB
for bands below 15 meters (use 40 meters)? The FL1 SSB filter must be
set to OP1. Typical BFO frequency setting for LSB should be in the
4913.6 kHz vicinity and for USB the BFO frequency should be near 4916.7 kHz.

Check those frequencies at TP2 (the test point accessible through the
hole in the KSB2 board). Go to CAL FIL in the menu, edit the parameter
(you will see the DAC value) then tap DISPLAY to see the frequency. Set
to LSB mode and you should see the LSB frequency, then go to USB mode to
read its BFO frequency.

Bottom line, I suspect your BFO frequencies are reversed or way off
where they should be.

Your voltage measurements are correct. Yes, the manual voltage listings
for the SDO and SCK signal lines are backwards from what you would read
on a DMM. The listed voltages are for the active state of those lines
which can only be observed by an oscilloscope when the VFO knob is turned.

[Elecraft] Using Elecraft KPA-1500 for 2 radios

2019-03-17 Thread Charlie Wirth
I own a Flex 6400 and an Icom 7700. I currently have the amplifier connected
to the Flex. There may be times I want to use the Icom 7700. Other than
disconnecting the send and control cables from the 1500 that go to the Flex and
plugging in the same cables from the 7700 is there any other way to have both
sets of cables connected to the amplifier safely? I would only be using one
radio at a time and the other one would be turned off. I know that I would
have to go into the menu settings of the amplifier to change the baud radio and
radio when I use the other radio.

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] K3/P3 TXD tap

2019-03-17 Thread Don Wilhelm

Mike,

No matter what you do, make certain the TXD and RXD lines have only one
driver on them. That would be the driver in the K3 and the other in
your computer.

Configure any other gear to "listen only" to the traffic between the
computer and the K3/P3.

If anyone has done this home brew I would like to know how you did it,
ie which connector on the P3 and which pins.  I need more than just band
data provided by the ACC plug for the amp and Steppir.  Too bad there is
not a RXD/TXD tap in the K3 ACC plug or a tap plug in the P3.  I guess
one could be installed in the P3 blank slots and tap over to the RXD/TXD
connectors,  73 Mike K4PI

Guys, of course there is firmware in the hat! What do you think keeps the bill
stiff?

Just a testament to how good our firmware engineers are (starting with the head

Now perhaps we might return to helping W5SUM enjoy his new acquisition of a

Re: [Elecraft] Why are the batteries internal to the KX3?

2019-03-17 Thread Craig Temple via Elecraft
Chuck,

I ordered my KX3 without the battery charger with the specific intention of
never putting batteries into the radio. I have seen too many products
destroyed over the years by defective batteries. In addition, splitting the
halves which are connected by a ribbon cable seems too much wear and tear for
my dollars.

My only option for HF is portable on local hilltops.

I bought two Bioenno Power BLF-12045W - a bit costly - well worth it to me.
They arrive with anderson powerpoles on the output. These batteries stay above
12v for more than 3hrs with an 80/20 listen/transmit operation - this keeps my
KX3 at the higher output wattage. I recommend Bioenno's charger for their
batteries.

Hope this is helpful.

I don't like to disassemble the KX3 to
take out the batteries when not using or to do battery
 maintenance.
I would rather have a slim case with
the same rectangular outline as the KX3 that attaches to the
rear panel and just plugs into the KX3 thru the external DC
 input.
Has anyone done that as an accessory
 product?

Re: [Elecraft] Mic Noise

2019-03-17 Thread Buck
The mics work. My problem was a burst of noise when the rig went into
transmit.

It appears re-seating the USB cable in the back of the radio has cured
the problem. It did not appear to be lose. And the noise would appear
even if I was using the VOX or PTT switch or the internal DVR. In other
words, not using the USB to trigger the radio.

There's one to put in the books. I am sure I won't be the only person
to run into this and I still can't explain it.

It sounds like that noise is coming from whatever computer software

When you unplug the USB cable, whatever software you are using loses

When you plug it back in, that program is not attempting to re-establish
communications.

What applications do you have active on your computer?

I again suggest you get the microphone to work first - unplug everything
from the K3 except the microphone, the power and the antenna
connection.  There may be something unrelated to the microphone going
awry, so eliminate everything except the microphone.  When that works,
build things back up one at a time until you discover the culprit.

Here is a clue.  If I turn on the VOX and reduce the either the RF or
AF gain on the receiver, I start getting the noise about once every
half second.  It sounds like it starts with a "ping." Sounds like
something is polling the radio.

If I disconnect the USB cable on the back of the radio, no noise. It
seemed to be properly seated.  Now, if I plug the USB cable back into
the radio, no noise.  Have I found the culprit?  A lose USB cable?

If anyone has done this home brew I would like to know how you did it,
ie which connector on the P3 and which pins.  I need more than just band
data provided by the ACC plug for the amp and Steppir.  Too bad there is
not a RXD/TXD tap in the K3 ACC plug or a tap plug in the P3.  I guess
one could be installed in the P3 blank slots and tap over to the RXD/TXD
connectors,  73 Mike K4PI

Re: [Elecraft] Mic Noise

2019-03-17 Thread Bob McGraw K4TAX
By chance is MIC + LIN set to the ON mode in the MENU?   Should be OFF
for just microphone usage.

I agree with Don.  Disconnect everything except the power cables,
antenna coax and microphone.

Buck,

It sounds like that noise is coming from whatever computer software
application you are using.  You mentioned N1MM.
When you unplug the USB cable, whatever software you are using loses
communications with the radio.
When you plug it back in, that program is not attempting to
re-establish communications.

What applications do you have active on your computer?

I again suggest you get the microphone to work first - unplug
everything from the K3 except the microphone, the power and the
antenna connection.  There may be something unrelated to the
microphone going awry, so eliminate everything except the microphone.
When that works, build things back up one at a time until you discover
the culprit.

Re: [Elecraft] Win4K3Suite ?

2019-03-17 Thread Barry
I'm using Win4K3 with my K3s. It works like a champ. I have the IF out
driving the RSP2 for spectrum and I have LP-Pan installed so I can drive
my USB sound card for the those things like CW Skimmer. If you do this,
I suggest that you buffer the IF output with an ~3-6db amplifier before
going to the splitter. If you don't split the IF out, the RSP2 works
fine.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2019-03-17 Thread kevinr

Good Morning,

The snow is slowly melting its way off the land.  I flushed the
first grouse of the season who was checking out the newly exposed soil.
The air smells wonderful, no dust, no pollen, no mold.  With the
increasing temperature the bugs will soon be here.  Once they get
hatched the hummingbirds will come and eat them.

A slowly moving CME will also be here soon, maybe even today.
According to SpaceWeather.com the solar wind is moving faster than this
ejection.  Even with no spots the sun is still active.  Lots of aurora
showing so there must be ions flowing.  Let's see if that helps the
propagation even though it will be noisy.

Please join us tomorrow on:

14050 kHz at 2200z Sunday (3 PM PDT Sunday)
7047 kHz at z Monday (5 PM PDT Sunday)

73,
Kevin. KD5ONS

Re: [Elecraft] Win4K3Suite ?

2019-03-17 Thread Charles Tropp
Hi Bob,

I just started using Win4K3 last August when I upgraded to a new computer
system. It also runs DXLab, N1MM, SKCCLoger, CW Skimmer and WJST. It
performs flawlessly. Just remember to turn on your K3 before you run
Win4K3. I love the macro feature since it is so easy to write, store and
change them. It has a nice sync with ClubLog although I prefer
SpotCollector. The K3 memories are right up front and easy to access. I
don't use too many of the controls as I got the program mainly for the
virtual ports. I am sure you will enjoy the program.
