It’s designed for /PM and stealth ops. In many other situations, of course, a
longer/higher antenna will be more efficient.

Re: [Elecraft] AX1 Loaded Whip Antenna - Elevation and

2019-08-26 Thread David Gilbert

I think users of the AX1 would be better off thinking of IT as the
counterpoise, and making the most out of what they normally consider to
be the counterpoise wire.

Look at it this way.  Unless you have a lot of current on the shield of
the coax (in which case IT is doing a lot of radiating), roughly equal
currents are going to try to go both ways from the feedpoint ... into
the AX1 and into the "counterpoise" wire.  The AX1 is typically
physically shorter and it certainly has more loss, and since the
radiated field is a function of net current and length, in most cases
the counterpoise wire is at least trying to do the most radiating.  I
say "in most cases" because the typical position of the counterpoise
wire puts it along the ground or near some other RF-sucking structure.

In my opinion, probably the best way to use the AX1 is to put the
counterpoise wire as straight, high, and in the clear as possible and
let the AX1 act like the shortened other half of the circuit (i.e., the
counterpoise).  If that isn't possible, make the counterpoise wire as
straight and vertical as possible ... climb a tree and let the wire hang
down.  ;)

If I had a good EZNEC model of the AX1 I'm pretty sure I could prove
that assertion, but for those who have an AX1 I'd bet some field
strength experiments would bear me out.

I'm not saying that the AX1 isn't a worthwhile investment, and I'm not
saying it doesn't radiate.  I just think there are some misconceptions
on what it's actually doing and how to best make use of it.

As Wayne said, the AX1 is particular wrt configuration. When it’s good, it’s
very, very good, but when it’s bad, it’s terrible. The NanoVNA is pretty
cheap/light kit to add if you’re not bringing an ATU-enabled rig.

Actually, it does.  I reported on this in a message to the reflector titled "TX

As a follow up Wayne wrote:

The only thing that isn’t turned on is the carrier. It could be that in SSB

I can clarify this in an errata item for the owner’s manual.

It may also be possible for me to disable the TX AF path via a DSP command, and
I’ve added that to the firmware task list.

Unfortunately, as I responded, I first observed it in CW mode, and I had at the
time, confirmation from three other guys who observed a similar situation.

TX TEST mode has always closed the relay and keying lines even though the rig

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 Power Output Variation

2019-08-26 Thread Bob Wilson, N6TV
One thought, have you run the Elecraft TX GAIN Calibration procedure
recently? It's built in to the K3 Utility.

Unfortunately, the Utility sets the TX gain at a midpoint frequency on
every band, frequencies I rarely use, and I was observing first dit "power
spikes" in the output of the KPA1500 when driven by a K3.

To eliminate these power spikes (thanks to Rene at Elecraft for this tip),
with the amp. in STBY and the tuner enabled for best match on your favorite
frequency (or if connected to a dummy load), set the drive power to exactly
50W and press and hold the XMIT button (TUNE), then once the display
stabilizes, tap it again (just takes a few seconds). This re-calibrates
the TX GAIN on that frequency, instead of the one used by the Utility. At
any other power setting other than 50W, the TUNE button doesn't change
anything, so change the power level back after you are done.

You could do this once on you favorite areas of the CW bands, then use the
K3 Utility to Save that configuration, then repeat the procedure on the
phone segments, and use the K3 Utility to Restore whatever configuration
you need that weekend (but this may not work so well for mixed mode
contests).

So try the simple 50W calibration test on 40m to see if it makes any
improvement.

As for KPA1500 output power variation with temperature, it is annoying, and
it seems to vary from KPA1500 to KPA1500, perhaps depending on how many
other devices or heat sources are located near the ventilation holes. The
best option when operating a contest seems to be to set the KPA1500 minimum
fan speed to 1, so that amplifier doesn't heat up too quickly, maintaining
a more stable (but not perfectly stable) power output level.

[Elecraft] K3 & K3S for sale

2019-08-26 Thread Charlie T
Obviously, a lot of us are dumping our K3's (plural) & K3S' (also plural) as
their prices have fallen through the floor with the introduction of the K4.
(Can't say I'm thrilled about THAT, but it IS inevitable as new models are
introduced.)

However, a lot of the 'for sale' listings cleverly try to sneak the "S" onto
the model number, or imply that it is a K3S when the radio really is NOT a K3S.
Bear in mind, if your radio does not show K3S on the front panel, it is a K3,
albeit upgraded, but NOT a K3S.

The new synthesizer boards will improve performance, but there are some subtle
differences between a K3 and a K3S that no amount of updating with new boards
or mods can change.

While the K3 concept of buying a newer "upgraded" synthesizer board for
example, rather than a new radio sounds like a great idea which will surely
change the performance, I feel it is NOT a feasible solution, as it generates a
worthless board that is only good as a pistol target.
My particular course of action was to sell my K3 after I had taken out what
ever options I could add to a new K3S.
That way, I get the latest production changes (note, there ARE a number of them
pertinent ONLY to the K3S) and, no junk boards are generated.

Too bad I can't do the same thing with the K4.

Hi Randy,

Yes, that's exactly what I designed the Y-BOX to
do, and it is still in production.

In addition to an Elecraft amplifier, lots of folks want to connect other
devices to the K3 ACC port at the same time, such as automatic band
decoders and antenna switches, FSK digital keyers, SO2R boxes, RemoteRig
boxes, etc. You can try to use 15-pin Y-cables with all wires connected,
but they create a lot of clutter behind the radio, and proper Y-cables are
hard to find (most are made for VGA monitors, so they omit the VGA +5V
line, Pin 9, but that is one of the critical Elecraft Band Data pins).

The "breakout box" feature of the Y-BOX makes it easy to connect other
devices to the AUX port pins using simple RCA connectors, such as some FSK
Keyers (Mortty or WinKey v3), the SteppIR Tuning Relay Interrupt cable, or
a second footswitch.

The Y-BOX Version 2 ads a dedicated "AMP AUX" connector, with only selected
pins wired, wired exclusively for the Elecraft KPA500 / KAT500 / KPA1500.
The Elecraft KPAK3AUX cable set is *not* needed if you use the Y-BOX,
though it will work fine too. But connect any stock $10 - $12 15-pin cable
to that port, and it works the same, plus it provides one more feature not
supported by the Elecraft AUX cable. (Reminder: VGA monitor cables must
*never* be used, with or without the Y-BOX, because they short too many
pins together.)

The Y-BOX v2 adds two internal jumpers. One jumper allows you to power on
or off an attached KPA500 or KPA1500 using a K3 macro. This feature is not
supported by the Elecraft cables unless you modify them. This uses DIGOUT1
Pin 11 on the K3 side and PWR ON Pin 8 on the amplifier side.

The other Y-BOX jumper can be used to open the keying line in the 15-pin
cable (Pin 10), which is what you must do when using any of the SteppIR or
N8LP Tuning Relay Interrupt safety devices to prevent high power from
damaging the antenna while it is tuning. Normally you would have to attach
the male/male "tuning relay interrupt" adapter supplied with the KPAK3AUX
cable set to the back of the K3 to open the keying line in the 15-pin AUX
cable, otherwise the tuning relay interrupt won't work and you can damage
the antenna. Using a Y-BOX and a simple stereo cable, the Tuning Relay
Interrupt is inserted in series with the keying line in the AUX cable, so
you only need one 15-pin cable to the amplifier. Separate RCA phono
"Relay" between the amp, SteppIR Controller, and radio is not needed.

FYI, I can provide another box called The Serial Box
(S-BOX and S-BOX-USB) which provides rig control and simultaneous amplifier
frequency tracking, plus computer-generated CW / PTT keying for a KX2 or
KX3 using a single USB cable (equivalent to setting CONFIG:PTT-KEY to
RTS-DTR in the K3, which is not an option on the KX2 or KX3). It also
works with most non-Elecraft rigs and amplifiers, SteppIR controllers,
Kessler AT Autotuner, etc.

Finally, connecting a KPA500 or KPA1500 to a FlexRadio is now fully
supported via the S-BOX-USB V2, though I haven't updated my web site with
the details yet.

TX TEST mode has always closed the relay and keying lines even though the
rig is putting out no RF. This is a safe way to test your keying relay
connections and amp. keying light, and perhaps it also protects the
receiver from getting a bunch of internal noise from inside the radio, so
that is working as designed. Any RF you see could be caused by some static

in TX TEST mode, even if you have CW in SSB enabled and tap the key (which
you probably did at some point by going to CONFIG: CW WGHT and tapping [1]
to enabled it, which is useful in VHF bands it seems. You can disable the
feature if you don't want RF to come out or don't want the relay to close

Re: [Elecraft] AX1 Loaded Whip Antenna - Elevation and

2019-08-26 Thread MaverickNH
I brought along a NanoVNA this trip and used it to array the two counterpoise
attached to my AX1 antenna - adjustments of counterpoise brought SWR down
from 9+ to <2. SNRs in the low ‘teens with a 200mW WSPRlite vs upper 20s -
*inside* a hotel room with sealed windows.

As Wayne said, the AX1 is particular wrt configuration. When it’s good, it’s
very, very good, but when it’s bad, it’s terrible. The NanoVNA is pretty
cheap/light kit to add if you’re not bringing an ATU-enabled rig.

[Elecraft] Portable Speakers

2019-08-26 Thread Grant Youngman
Here’s been a lot of discussion from time to time about compact lightweight
speakers for portable operation with the KX3, and probably the KX2 also.

I’ve tried several things recommended here, and they’ve mostly all ended up in
a storage bin in the garage awaiting their fate in a trash compactor — sound
awful, too flimsy, quit or broken after a week, whatever. And I reverted to my
old “portable” Sony SRS-X33 that weights about 1.5 lbs.

I recently discovered the SoundMatters FOXL Dash 7. Weighs less than 8 oz, 12
hour internal battery life, stereo, and sounds good. Takes up no noticeable
space in my (Rose Kopp) KX3 go bag. This speaker was introduced around 2015,
but is still available from the vendor (priced high) or from various eBay
sellers for $90-95. I bought mine from the manufacturer for $90, but they’ve
since deleted that offer. You can see mine in the top pic of my QRZ page.

Just an FYI … in case you’re still hunting for something useful that won’t hurt
your ears. Pricey compared to some, but I’ve concluded you get what you pay
for.

[Elecraft] P3 behavior

2019-08-26 Thread Fred Jensen
I have an early K3/100 [#642] and a P3.  On 60 m [5358.5] CW, I can see
my signal when I key, at about -90 dBm on both the spectrum display and
the waterfall.  This seems to occur only on 60 m, on other bands the P3
display "mutes" on key-down. I just noticed it, don't know if it's
always been that way or not.  Any ideas if this is a problem?

I built the N0SS amp keying circuit and just use my KPA500 and get around 350

Bummer here. You snooze, you loose on as the K2 parts get harder to find.
My unit #6011 lacks the amp, NR module, and the KX60V. Hope to get a 160
antenna up this fall after adding the 160m module.

The K2, for me, is most enjoyable to use as well.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] HS-5 'phones on KX3 & KX2

2019-08-26 Thread Jay Rutherford
Greetings,

When I listen to my KX2 and KX3 using the Kenwood HS-5 headphones, I hear a
square wave-like buzz bilaterally. Active signals can push the buzz into the
background, but the buzz is annoying when there is no signal. Listening to the
KX radios on another set of headphones does not produce the same buzz.

Using the HS-5 'phones on my K2 or TS-2000 results in very pleasant audio.

Anybody have any thoughts why this might be happening?

Re: [Elecraft] KX4 Features ??

2019-08-26 Thread Thorsten Fricke

As an owner of a KX2... IF there is something needed at all, then yes,
it would be the 70cm/2M option.
So far, the KX2 and any Anytone 878 do the job in combination.

Just my 2 cents
Thossi, DH4FT

Am 21.08.19 um 02:56 schrieb Bill Frantz:

The part of operating the KX3 I like the least is switching between SSB
and digital. I have to change the mic and headphones out and connect the
sound card. On my K3, I just change the mode switch. Having an internal
sound card would probably eliminate this hassle.

I like the KX2 form factor. For this kind of radio, small is good. It
would be nice to support all the bands the KX3 supports -- 160, 6, and 2
meters. 160M support could be through a small external box, since
pedestrian mobile on 160 doesn't seem likely. For ARES/RACES use, 70 cm
would be needed.

[Elecraft] KPA500/KPA1500 General Coverage?

2019-08-26 Thread Michael Tope

Hi All,

I have some work colleagues who need to test some HF components with a
few hundred watts of CW power, perhaps a little more depending on what
they find. I think this would mostly be in the 7 to 11 MHz range and
perhaps at the 2nd and third harmonics of this range. Will my KPA500
work for this? How about the KPA1500? What about the rest of the 1.8 to
30 MHz range? Are there any excluded ranges in the coverage of these two
amplifiers?

Thanks,

Mike W4EF..
