[Elecraft] K4 mail filter for Thunderbird

2020-10-05 Thread Jim McCook
I have saved URLs to 10 reflectors, but always have opted _OUT of Email_
from all of them.  The saved links are to their _archives_ only, viewing
by thread.  Some, like the Elecraft reflector and all the groups.io
lists, are continuous.  Other archives for lists like CQ-Contest, RFI
list, etc. require changing the month in the saved URL when a new month
appears.  Not a big problem... takes only seconds each month.

This way I just click on the bookmarked URL for the reflector that I'm
interested in and view the threads.  I probably view 10% or less of all
the posts on the Elecraft reflector.  I can't imagine actually getting
Email from all the posts or having to set up filters for new ones that
appear that I'm not interested in viewing.  It makes these reflectors
light years easier to manage as compared to getting all those emails!

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 battery upgrade?

2020-10-05 Thread Tim Tucker
I'd be up for that. The KX3 is my favorite radio. After I got the KX2 and
started enjoying its internal Li-ion battery pack, I realized that the
KX3's internal NiMH battery charger is its worst feature. I too never use
it anymore and have just switched to a small, external LifePO4 pack.

[Elecraft] Saving/Sharing Macros

2020-10-05 Thread Ed Kuebert
I would like to share my K3s macros with my son. In the K3 utility I click on
the save button, but cannot find the file. Are they stored in a file I can copy
and send to him or do I have to make a screen shot or copy and paste to a text
file.? Perhaps someone has found a better method. Thanks for your help.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Issue with HI CUR on 12m

2020-10-05 Thread Bill Coleman
Curious. I’m doing a lot of antenna work right now. I had to remove my
12/17/30m trap inverted V to get my beam off the tower.

In the meantime, I’m making due with a 20/40/80m trap dipole.

If I use 12m on the 20/40/80m dipole using a tuner, I’m not having any HI CUR
issues, even when running 100 watts.

I think what I’m seeing is an RF in the shack issue. The 20/40/80m antenna feed
point is about 70 feet further away than the old 12/17/30m antenna.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 battery upgrade?

I also always carry a LiFePo4 when I go portable with my KX3.

I'd be interested in moving a LiFePO4 battery into the case and
removing the NiMH Eneloops that don't seem to provide enough
voltage or last long enough.

Great idea, count me in!

At first I thought “The new KXBC3a should be backward compatible to NiMH
cells”. Then I realized “Who would want to go back”? Then for safety reasons
make it impossible to “accidentally“ connect the LiFePo4 battery pack to a
KXBC3.

[Elecraft] KX3 battery upgrade?

2020-10-05 Thread Steve KC6ZKT
The KX3 is my favorite of my HF radios right now. But one of my
annoyances is the internal battery limitations.

I always wind up carrying an external 6_Ah or 10_Ah LiFePo4 battery into
the field when I use this radio, an external charge controller, and
solar panel. It's not a big problem, but it also should not be a big
project to improve this situation. The KXBC3 has enough real estate to
include a lithium battery charger, and even a solar charge controller in
its space. The amount of battery energy that could fit in-place of the
NiMH cells could approximately triple the capacity of the AA cells.

So I have these questions:

1) How many of you out there might buy an upgrade which replaces the
KXBC3 board with a lithium battery manager, and a associated battery pack?

2) Are there any 3rd parties already making anything like this?

Doug,

Do the K2ATOBKT first, and where those instructions indicate, do the
BFOMDKT and the other auxiliary kits. That will synchronize them for you.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 mail filter for Thunderbird

2020-10-05 Thread Gwen Patton
I just use GMail. I scroll through my emails and look at the subject. If it
has something in it I don't want to read, I check the box at the left.
After I go through all of them that way (not even opening them yet), I
click the "mark as read" button. All the marked emails get moved out of my
inbox to the "read" portion. They aren't gone, I can go back and read any
of them if I want to, but I don't have to read them NOW. I go to the bottom
of my remaining unread emails, open the last one, and read it. Then I hit
the arrow at the top right, and move to the next email. Lather, rinse,
repeat.

Not all that hard.

If there is something that pops up frequently, I create a filter for it,
and just mark it as read. On rare occasions, I make a folder and send the
offenders to Coventry. Other than that, I read pretty much everything else.

Mike,

Easy with Thunderbird,

Make a filter for your incoming mail - If the subject line contains K4,
move it to whichever folder you would like.

That will work as long as everyone puts 'K4' in the subject line. For
the rest, you will have to use the Delete key.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 mail filter for Thunderbird

2020-10-05 Thread Steve KC6ZKT

I use Thunderbird on some of my machines, Apple Mail on others.

Because Apple Mail leaves even much more to be desired than Thunderbird,
I was using procmail on my ISP's server to do all of my filtering to
mailboxes. Later, the authors stopped maintaining it, and I switched to
a similar, more up-to-date tool. I recommend that you ask your ISP what
they have installed. If they're running Linux, then they might have
Pigeonhole [ https://pigeonhole.dovecot.org ] available.

It's much cleaner to do all of the filtering at my mailbox, rather than
on each desktop, laptop, tablet, or phone I might want to access it from.

The power system for my K3/P3 consists of a large SLA AGM battery that is

adjusted to 14.2V to accommodatethe drop through the wiring, the PGS-40 and the

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Power Supply Recommendation

2020-10-05 Thread Hank via Elecraft
Assuming the K4 likes a little extras voltage like the K3S (14.2VDC for mine),
I have been running an Astron RM-50 linear for 10 years or so and would
recommend it or the 35 amp version.  I modified the voltage sense circuit to
follow the voltage at the rear of the K3s to help with voltage drop around a
power gate.  The only time it has been off was for the modification and if the
AC power fails.

It powers all of my station accessories with a little room to spare.

The power werx switching supply is also on the bench - bought it before my K3s
for VHF/UHF radios.  It has been repaired once for the choke on the input power
lead - it failed and made terrible broadband noise.  It is 6 years old.  It has
a little higher ripple than the Astron - always has.  Probably not a big deal
though.

My $0.02.

Re: [Elecraft] Pennies?

2020-10-05 Thread George Danner
Neil,
When I bought my K3 in 2008 and later on when I added the rest of the
K-Line, I bought kits. Did the same for my KX3 and KXPA.
They were not bought to save dollars but to familiarize myself with the
equipment.
I bought a fairly bare K3-100 - only added the tuner. As time went by I
added all but the TXO and then added some K3s stuff - new synthesizers and
USB interface. Starting with a kit made all of the upgrades a non-event,
even when I had to remove the front panel.

My recollection is that the difference in cost was minimal (a few percent).
My guess was that the cost of not assembling an Elecraft is mostly offset
by the additional packaging and instructions for the kit end user.

I'm probably going to make a K4 my final radio as a 80th birthday present
in a year or two!
